"We've enhanced your listing’s primary photo to improve your chances of selling.
Photos with a clean and uncluttered background help buyers appreciate the value of your item and increases the chance of it selling. To help your item stand out, we’ve made a copy of the main photo in your Coach handbag listing and cleaned up the background.
Item listing: Coach Hampton Canvas Leather Shopper Tote Small Black White Tan #7771
Before:
After:
The new photo is now the main photo in your listing. Your original photo is still there too. This photo clean-up is part of a new service that we’re testing at no cost to you.
We hope you like the results and find this service helpful. Please let us know by sending your feedback to DL-eBay-Photo-CleanUp-Feedback@ebay.com."
My response was this:
"I just received an email with another new "improvement", taking my background out of my photo!
As a long time professional seller, I have spent years perfecting my backgrounds so that they look professional yet show the uniqueness of the item I am selling, which is always an inventory of 1. My backgrounds are not cluttered and are clean. You are also making changes to a photo that I hold the copyright to without my permission.
Creating a catalog for a site that has sellers providing just 1 of an item, mostly used, is not feasible. Stop trying to be Amazon and instead celebrate what made you popular and unique in the first place.
Ebay needs to stop trying to fix things that arent broken and instead work on the search and spend money advertising to get buyers back to the site. "

Those don't open up for me...
But I would like to see if an item is lain on a filthy carpet, because I would never buy it.
That is much different from what you use as a display.
I agree that eBay should fix what is broken and quit messing with our listings.

I actually like the new version eBay took the 'liberty' of editing. And I wholeheartedly agree that eBay should be directing their efforts to fixing what is broke instead of futzing with things that don't need fixing.

Oh, you bad for having seams in the original pic. Geesh....
The original looks great.
On the good side, at least eBay isn't charging for the "fixing"......yet.

I don't like it. My photos are MY photos and they can keep their hands off of them.
Plus I do photos to show scale of an item, usually a purse on a dressform or with a measuring tape. By cleaning up those kind of images ebay leaves a seller open to SNAD complaints. I'd love to see them get their asses sued off by a seller this happens too.
Their 'think tank' that comes up with these insane ideas need to all be taken out and beaten soundly with soap in a sock.

I don't like it because it's none of their darn business. Aside from that, I like to know what the seller's background looks like. If something is lying on a messy floor, it will have an impact on whether or not I choose to purchase the item.
P.S. LOVE your response!

Hmmm, interesting. I have mixed feelings on this. I see both sides.
First off the new pic looks great, but it also looks like a stock photo, which many of us think is a detriment when selling a 1 off pre-owned item. Secondly, I agree with everything you said in your response. Third, the first time I read of this happening was on a purse & they cropped out the manni. THAT would piss me off b/c the manni was there to provide size & strap drop perspective to avoid a possible SNAD.
OTOH, for the average non-professional seller, I think these photos could be a huge improvement. I think if they want to offer this "service", it's not the end of the world, but they need to ask the seller BEFORE they change the listing. Maybe send an email with their proposed pic & then let you decide.

My photos are something that shows they are mine. The background is consistent so I can tell if someone is stealing the photos.

I don't care for the new image. It does look like a stock photo and I agree with Labby about being able to recognize your own photos. And cropping a manni out of pics? Complete BS. Why bother taking nice pics? Just throw your item in a pile of carp, and let ebay do the work. ::eye roll::

Does their shrink-wrap agreement give them rights to alter our photos? They already take our ended listing info and sell it back to us as Terapeak, Worthpoint, etc. And our photos can be used in their catalog unless we specifically opt-out. I'm not sure we have any rights once we click login. They probably can do whatever they want with our pix.
True the edited photo looks great. So what? They could easily edit and perfect the listings of millions of closet cleaners. But once you have a store, it's logical to assume the seller might want the photos as presented. And they should keep their hands off... or at least contact the seller first and see if they would like the help. Bonanza has a background burner that's available for sellers to use IF THEY WANT. It's optional.
I'm experimenting with using various backgrounds in pictures on my Big Commerce store. My photos are instantly recognizable in a google search, in a sea of almost identical white-background-scarf-on-mannequin photos. It's my attempt at personalizing MY website in a sea of corporate sites. But it seems that perhaps eBay wants to edit out the individual so it looks like items are being purchased from eBay, not a seller ON eBay. Isn't that how Amazon does it? Will be interesting to see if this is just an occasional thing or if it becomes the norm. And of course, if they charge us for "using" it.

If they want to offer that service then fine, let people who want it sign up for it. And probably charge them an arm and a leg to do it.
But to just change peoples images is wrong wrong wrong, and probably illegal. The seller owns the copyright on those images, to change them without their permission is opening ebay up to big problems.

I just don't like the fact that ebay is changing our photos without our permission. I take a lot time getting my listings the way I want to present them and don't appreciate someone over riding my decisions.

To me it looks like you swiped a stock photo with the new pic there and while it's a pretty good job they took too much from the upper left of the handle leaving a flat area and left a point on the inside right of the handle. I know it shouldn't bother me but gosh darn it, it does, A LOT.

RIGHT~~ I felt the same way about the "click for description" problem a while back. I had my listing all set up the way I wanted them & they weren't showing like that. I changed things to reflect Ebay's changes & they changed things back. I still haven't gotten over being upset about all the work I did to have things like I wanted them. I hate that they can change things with out our permission/consent.

I actually got a response on this from Ebay I was shocked!
Thank you for your feedback. As a seller on eBay, your insights are invaluable as we seek to improve the seller experience on our platform. To be honest, one of the reasons why I dont like Tradesy is because they use this type of software for the main photo. And I dont like how it looks. Most stock photos, even if they have a clear white background, still show depth. This does not.

Also, it is a huge legal issue. My photo is copyrighted and I did not give them permission to edit it. I have also opted out of allowing them to use any of my photos in the catalog. I put a lot of work into my photos and they are mine.

I do NOT want to see anything resembling a stock photo when I'm buying a USED item.
NWT is different.

It does look like a stock photo which always makes me suspicious when I'm buying something used. I think your photos are great and I don't know why they would feel the need to change them. There are so many other things that really need to be worked on. But, of course, that's ebay. I'm glad they took the time to get back to you though - surprising.

I sort of hate that eBay is doing this...I think sellers with good pictures have an edge over the ones with bad pics. And trust me there are a LOT of sellers with bad pics right now. It's helping my sales

I think they are choosing photos like this one because they are easy to remove the background on. The more background clutter, the harder it is to clean up. It is a big experiment and they are headed for the easy targets so to speak.

It is a big experiment and they are headed for the easy targets so to speak. Makes sense, and sounds like eBay. Your picture was fine, it's the crappy can't even tell WTH you're buying pictures that eBay needs to work on. But then, eBay is the one who keeps sending out the emails about how easy it is to sell here - snap a pic with your camera, slap it up, add 3-4 words and ta-da, You Are A Seller! They can't have it both ways.
