Anyone else growing asparagus? The first purple asparagus shoot came up today. Nothing from my green asparagus yet.

Waiting for mine to pop up. Not a lot made it, since I never can dig down deep enough. I have a huge layer of rock under about 4-5" of soil.

What variety do you have?
A few more of mine came up but none of the green asparagus. I'm wondering if my green asparagus didn't make it.

There is a variety? I guess ... green. tee hee. I got them at Lowes or WM. Bought more at WM last summer and never did plant them...duh. In PA, it hasn't been warm long enough to be coming up yet.

A little late to the party, but ours started popping up a couple of weeks ago. They are doing really good this year.

I harvested ONE 16" high stalk. Had another very thin one, waited for a few days and it flowered. Nothing else showing....

Out at the country home there is an area about the size of a football field where the stuff grows rampant. While I am not a vegetable lover to begin with asparagus, lima beans and peas to me are the three most vile of them all. Green and yellow beans follow close behind but I digress. The dang stuff grows like weeds. Last weekend Todd's BIL came out to pick some and left with around 20lbs of it. This was after he had cut away the woody stuff. And he didn't even seem to scratch the surface of what's still out there.

Asparagus

Our patch gets a bit bigger every year. We planted it in three stages. And it grows just about anywhere with no maintenance needed. There are people every year stopped along side the roads picking it out of the ditches. I'm actually looking for different recipes to try since we have so much of it.
The bf is bringing home morels just about everyday now. I don't care for them which is weird since I love mushrooms. Everyone goes crazy for them and I'm like, "eh, I'll pass."

I think I will pass. I am not a big vegetable eater.
Now if there is an ice cream factory giving out free samples nearby, I am in.

We have pear trees, apple trees, a couple plum trees AND don't forget the peacock. Yes, singular now as poor Brit got eaten by a coyote. Kevin is still running amock. I'm sure with the conditions we have morels but I have yet to look...just no time. There is also mulberry trees galore as well as wild black raspberries. Last year between the mulberries and raspberries I swear I picked well over 40 lbs throughout the summer.

Would probably work out better next year, Denise, if you planted more than one.

Here's the thing that I don't understand. Everyone during the spring is like...OMG you have all these trees and fruits blah blah and I'm so jealous, and I tell them that I could NEVER in my lifetime eat all the fruit out there. <<<<----We all know the best bite of an apple is the first bite. Because I have around 100 apple trees with 100s of apples on each tree I can and do take a single bite out of an apple and toss it. Then do it again and again and at the end of the season apples are still rotting off the trees. But anyway.. I tell the neighbors out there, my friends ect you can have ALL the apples, pears, plums, berries you want. Just let me know if/when you want to go pick them. And the past two summers only ONE person has come to pick anything.
I called one of the local food pantries here and told them if they could get someone to contact me to pick apples they could have all they wanted. NEVER heard anything. I contacted a couple of the local 4-h clubs because many of those do food runs ect..never heard anything. So I just give up. I WISH you guys lived closer. I am beyond serious when I say you could have ALL the fruit you wanted.

Okay Harley-100 apple trees is 99 more than I would want....I wouldn't be able to eat all of the ones on even one tree, of course. What a shame that no one takes you up on picking them.
The farmers markets around here make a killing with home-grown apples.
My ex FIL used to sell his excess veggies to our local Shop n Save.

Ya Denise, the property used to be an actual orchard. The trees though have probably not had any type of pesticides on them in over 15-20 years. While I am not an apple connoiseur as close as I can tell there are around 10 or so different types of apples. Me....I prefer hard, green, tangy granny smith type. There are at least two types of pear trees. Some of the trees are dying and obviously once we get out there permanantly I will be removing them.
The one thing I am going to have to plant is rhubarb. LOVE rhubarb. I have some growing behind my garage that my grandpa probably planted in around the 1920s and I will be taking that with me. I am not one for jams/jellies at all but I love rhubarb sauce and would make it with some apples mixed in.
I HATE applesauce with a passion. It's the whole texture thing. I don't bake so no pies forthcoming lol. Once we get out there I might try my hand with some apple cider, and maybe let it ferment and make some hard cider even though I don't drink I know plenty of people who would enjoy it.

Sounds like a lot of work. I also love rhubarb, but the amount of sugar required is scary. I do miss it, since my grandmother always used to make it.
Our foodbanks take fresh veggies and fruits that are local. Such a waste for all of your available produce!
How about drying apples for apple chips? I still have one of those things that I stopped using years ago.

I am not big on anything like that that would require a lot of effort lol. And why eat a dried apple chip when I can open a bag of potato chips lol.
I like tart, tangy stuff and don't really add too much sugar. Last time I made it in a HUGE stock pot I only added like a cup of sugar.

Oooo-I will have to look up a rhubarb recipe!!! Great for fiber. Will allow myself a few less goodies to make up for the sugar.

Denise, I am so happy for you. Are you sure it is an asparagus plant or a wannabee?
Since you haven't seen many of them in your garden you might want to double check before you plan a menu around it.

Yes, I am very sure. Actual #2 was too thin and immediately went into seed.
Real #2 is about 4" tall!!!!

Good thing Kritter can't get out right now due to the flooding near her, because it means your asparagus is safe for now.
