Do I remember my first day? No, but I remember my kindergarten teacher. Miss Green. A real control freak. When we took naps, we ALL had to lie on our back. No side sleeping, no tummy sleeping. On. Your. Back. To this day, I do not generally sleep on my back. When we'd line up for stuff, the line had to be perfectly straight. I'm surprised she didn't use a yardstick or a leveling tool to check our straightness. She told me I was spelling my name wrong (first AND last). I told her to have the principal call my grandmother and she'd tell him I was spelling it right. Miss Green did not appreciate the suggestion. She had brown hair, wore those pointy cat eye glasses and always wore a headband. This was in '62. I was very happy to get promoted to the first grade. The witch.

I had Mrs. Donnelly. One day during musical chairs, I had won like 3 rounds in a row. She pulled me aside and asked me to lose so the other kids could win. I remember that I didn't know how to do jumping jacks, so she taught me. She also taught me to color in one direction. LOL
My first grade teacher's name was Miss Coffey. She went on vacation and came back as Mrs. Potts. I'm not kidding. Her name hyphenated name would have been Coffey-Potts.

My kindergarten and 5th grade teachers were the worst I had. Mrs. Wagner and Mrs. Burro I think it was. In 5th grade she said constantly throughout the day "I'm not going to tolerate that." Ugh, she was dreadful.
Do kindy kids still take naps? I remember them too. I've never liked sleeping on my back so I wouldn't have like Miss. Green either.

OMG...I'm a little bit freaked by this thread because just yesterday, on the way home from a Dr. appointment I had flashbacks to my kindergarten days and teacher. I was on morning session and loved my teacher, a lady in her late 50's... Mrs. Rodenberger. I used a cotton shag rug for nap time (think bathroom throw rug). There was one time I had to be picked up early due to the shame of an accidental wetting episode. In those days you could only leave your desk by permission...and I had been ignored (or was invisible)! Mother wasn't any too happy. OTOH, my 1st grade teacher was a 70-something witch...Mrs. Liberale. She thought nothing of cracking your knuckles or head with a ruler for inattention or getting answers wrong! Thereafter, the only "bad" memories I still have of all my teachers through H.S., is the one from 4th grade. She was nice, but had the worst case of denture breath...and because I always needed help in math, it was torture.

I don't remember anything about it, except that I never napped. I DO remember that I had to walk 5 blocks to the school by myself at age 5. Wonder how many times I got lost?

I don't remember my kindergarten teacher's name but she was nice. I remember lying on a mat staring out the glass door, doing colors and numbers and that's about it. My 2nd grade teacher was terrible! Miss somebody (don't remember her name either) was nice but she was never there. She was big into the formation of the teacher unions in early 70s in our area and we had subs constantly so we never learned anything. I'm not good in math anyhow so my math skills really suffered that year. We moved over that summer & I changed schools so I was way behind in math and I don't think I ever really caught up. I've hated match ever since then.

My kindergarten teacher's name was Miss Levinson. She was pretty and kind. It was only half-day, but I think we took naps.
My only perfectly clear memory was one day when we were all sitting on the floor while the teacher had a flip chart kind of thing and was teaching us about rhyming words. The word she was looking for rhymed with tool (it was a spool of thread). Everyone kept raising their hands and saying the wrong answer. Eventually she called on me and I got it right. I felt so proud.

I remember my first day. I cried. And in hindsight it was the right thing to do. Life was pretty much downhill after that. lol.
But I had a wonderful teacher, Miss Federenko. She was young and pretty (and plus-size) and wore chunky blue platform wedges with cork soles. (1976) I used to stare at them in envy at story-time. She had denim ones too.
We had a nap after lunch. I never went to sleep, just stared at the ceiling til it was over.

I don't remember kindergarten. It must have been uneventful. But first grade was wonderful. Mrs Zerky! She had all kinds of animals stored in jars of formaldehyde. We had snakes in the class and we got to bring the frogs we caught to class so the snake could eat. The student of the week got to bring the hamster home for the weekend. She was one cool teacher.

Reminds my of my 4th grade teacher Mr. Cuppy, he was one of the better ones. Kind of mountain man-ish. We had a boa constrictor in our class named Julius Squeezer , we'd gather around every time it was time to feed him a mouse. There were some other small animals in our room too. He kept us busy with fun class projects. I remember making an almost life size paper mâché brown bear and his breath always smelled like peanut butter... Hehe
