allikat - I'm sorry to hear this, it's such a shock, and after having gone through this already not so long ago. Take care of yourselves! It rained last night and then froze - it's 8:45 a.m. and very dark and we're draped in frozen fog with ice on the roads. The town sent the de-icer truck around (they're very fast with this kind of thing) but getting out of driveways is tough, and as soon as you hit Shoreline, which our town borders on, all bets are off - Shoreline city line starts across the road from us. I've come down with a cold so not going anywhere, anyway, but the DH is working from home for now.

Very sorry to hear your awful news, allikat. They should do an autopsy and see if he had a medical event that might ease his liability. I hope the other guy makes a full recovery. Take care of yourself through this.

It is still stupid cold out there. I went out to see if both vehicles would start and they did. Turned off the outside dripping faucets. Have quite a nice ice sculpture under the front faucet. If I didn't have all this cat nonsense going on here I would have been on a plane to visit Tabby last weekend and I would still be there. I don't know how people can live in weather like this for days and weeks.

I don't know how people can live in weather like this for days and weeks. Kritter, the weather here has been disappointing, too. Gray skies, rain, and chilly temps all winter so far. Only rare occasional moments of sunshine. I realize that I've got a lot of nerve to complain when most of you are snowy and freezing, so I'll shut up now....

We deal with this weather because we don't have any choice and know eventually it will warm up, even if that's a few months away. I think the same thing about you in TX when it's in the 90s-100s how you can deal with it for days and months. You'd be up here freezing your azz off and I'd be looking at you like, "What's the big deal?" and you'd be doing the same with me down there enduring your summer temps. One reason I visit friend in GA in October is it's the perfect temps for both of us.
allikat, I'm so sorry you and BF are going through that. I do hope an autopsy was done to determine cause of death that will help with legal matters.
I am getting really pizzed at Volunteers of America. Someone's been tagging through fabric for weeks and it's ridiculous how many pieces of clothing are ruined instead of tagging through tag or seam. I've pointed it out twice to employees (manager never seems to be around) and apparently nobody cares. I know I'm not the only one leaving stuff behind that would have been purchased otherwise. I would have bought 3 nwt tee shirts for DH, but all 3 were tagged through the neckline and you could already see the hole made from the barb that's obvious if worn and holes would only get bigger. Such a shame people donate things that get ruined from simple act of either not being trained properly or stupidity. Their losses and saves me money.
I got myself a simple pedometer that I find is a great motivator to keep moving. Even walking or jogging in place you have to make a good effort to make it count. Want to stay motivated to use it and get in better shape for vacations in Sept. and especially Oct. when I'm hoping to go back to GA to see my best friend ever. She said I'd better be in shape because we both want to walk at least a couple trails at Kennesaw Mountain State Park. All the places she took me to last year actually whipped me into shape that walking through Hartsfield Jackson airport on the way back didn't even get me winded. Want to keep it that way and hopefully drop a size or few in process to get back in stuff that's too tight or no long fits.

Thanks all, we were told the day of the accident , Wednesday, that a autopsy was mandatory when there was a fatal accident. Called shock trauma they told us the same thing on Thursday. Shock trauma release his dad to funeral home on Saturday and his dad was in WV by Sunday. Called state police and shock trauma on Monday to see when the results of the autopsy would be available and they said no autopsy was performed and it was too late now. BF's mom won't contact a lawyer for either the accident or to settle the estate, she "doesn't want the government involved". I have sort of thrown my hands up for now. They did recover his wallet today as well as a large amount of cash, tools and his firearm from his truck which was in the state police impound lot. I was very happy they located all of that. Finally got to take down my outside Christmas decorations today, do laundry and was able to get to grocery store. Tomorrow tree comes down and it all gets put away and I need to clean my house.
Snow again tomorrow night and Friday during the day just a few inches expected but with the temps as cold as they are it will cause a mess around here.

Sorry to hear that. His doctor must have signed the death certificate. At least in PA it would have been a coroners case but I am not sure if it were a medical event if it would affect any lawsuit.

labbypawsThat was my thought too on it not really affecting any lawsuit and even if they determined it was a heart attack or stroke, he had a history of Afib, insurance told us that if it was caused by a known medical condition he is still considered at fault because he knew about the condition and chose to drive. If it had been a sudden onset medical condition with no history such as a seizure then Marylands laws are different and whatever insurance pays out has to be accepted and no further action can be taken. I have to admit that was news to me, I am going to sit down with my insurance agent and go over all my insurance I do not want to find myself under insured in any situation.

Well that was super interesting! And to think women couldn't have a credit card in their name until 1974, that's crazy. And kind of scary as it was more recent than I would have thought.
Chap I sure am sorry to hear about your neighbor, that's very sad
Allikat I'm also so very sorry to hear about BF's dad. How awful
Seems like this year is starting out pretty sad. When DH woke up on New Year's day with the flu, I was thinking, wow this isn't the best start to a new year. But certainly much better than these terrible losses.
Well during the arctic freeze we lost power at 1 am Tuesday and it didn't come back on until 5:30 and it was 55 degrees in here! DH wasn't able to go to work because there was no power to get ready. Then after it was on for an hour it went out again! I took Janey out for a short walk and when I got back DH had the generator running and was plugging in the fridge, etc. Then about 45 minutes after he got everything plugged in it came back on again We just had a boring day where it was too cold to do anything. I made pulled pork in the crock pot and we watched a bunch of Seinfeld lol. It's 53 now and supposed to go up to 68 today and be partly sunny, yay! I sure hope so, as I hung out all the laundry in a hopeful mode.
Well I had intended to call the police non-emergency number after the new year to inquire about the schizophrenic neighbor and his rantings, but I got a bit derailed by DH's flu and the weather. He hadn't been out in a couple of weeks, either. Then this morning when DH was leaving for work at 5 a.m. he was out on FULL VOLUME screaming and cursing. So I called today and asked if calling 911 when he is having an episode is appropriate. And she said anytime he is "raging" it's completely appropriate to call 911. So I relayed this info to my neighbor (lovely young couple with 2 small boys) as we had talked about it previously. She has their phone number and is going to talk to them. Basically the intention is to let them know that while we feel for them, it's reached an unacceptable point and whenever it happens we are going to call 911. The police told me this morning that he would be taken for an evaluation whenever 911 is called. I've seen the police there before and I've never seen them take him anywhere, but I don't know who/how the police were called. So I am hoping things will eventually improve, I really think he needs to be institutionalized so he can get on the correct medicine. I don't know if he's off his meds or what. I was told 10 years ago he was diagnosed, but this only started about a year and a half ago.

That is interesting because when I graduated from college in 1965, Texaco sent me a credit card in my name. My mother had a freaking fit because she saw it as a path to the destruction of my credit. I kept it and used it without any credit repercussions. I still to this day pay off my credit card balances every month because I am too cheap to pay interest on the balances.
I did not read that article so maybe it was different for gas company credit cards.

Women could have credit cards before 1974, but it was at the discretion of the credit lender and many refused to issue one without a male cosinger. The 1974 law prohibited credit card companies from basing credit approval on gender. Did you know that the US government actually banned sliced bread? January 18, 1943. Not their brightest idea. The ban was quickly revoked. Not So Smart Ban on Sliced BreadSunny and mid to high 60s today. I'm going to straighten out the patio this afternoon before I head out to my PT appointment. I'm moving the small patio set from the dining room back out to the patio so I can turn the dining room into a small exercise area. Hopefully the patio set will also keep the fake grass rug from bunching up every time it's windy

Sorry to hear that. His doctor must have signed the death certificate. At least in PA it would have been a coroners case but I am not sure if it were a medical event if it would affect any lawsuit. I think it would affect a lawsuit, at least in some states. If he had a stroke or seizure for example (with no history of either), and that caused him to lose control of the car, there isn't much there to use if the other drivers family filed a wrongful death suit. OTOH, if he'd had a poor driving history with multiple accidents (like my mom did), and was still allowed to drive despite medical advice to the contrary, that would probably be grounds for a wrongful death suit and the drivers family would most likely win. BF's mother's refusal to consult an attorney is a mistake. Hopefully when she's out of the denial stage of grief, she can be talked into seeing one, if the other driver files suit that is. Hopefully they won't file though. That whole "don't want the government involved" attitude seems to be pretty common up in WV.

Our frozen fog is just the regular stuff now, clinging to the hills while the rain comes down. It's in the 30s so a lot of ice still around - it's supposed to be back in the 40s and just plain old rain by tomorrow instead of this almost freezing stuff. We're happier about our snow pack now. RetroMonde - how are you guys doing in all that ice? I heard the warmer air mass that was off the coast around Florence stalled and so you guys are still in misery with a thick coating of ice everywhere - 1" or more, I read. I hope you're OK, all these stories of downed lines and one awful account of a family who got electrocuted by falling cables. I'm really sick now so all of this cold and the like makes no difference to me as I'm not going anywhere anyway. Ain't no germs like British germs. staytuned - good idea to start more walking - even 'house walking' is a great idea, also as many stairs as you can or squats or wall sits - that really helps me with hiking. Having a great goal like yours really makes a difference. Stay safe, everyone!

I wasn't able to read the credit card article since I have some kind of ad blocker installed that I can't find to turn it off.
But I was able to get a charge card in 1968. I don't remember if my dad had to sign for it, but I don't think that he did.

I know for certain that nobody signed for mine. I didn't even apply for it. It just showed up in the mail one day like "Congrats on graduating, here is your first credit card". Apparently Texaco had more confidence in my money management skills than my mother did.

I hope you feel better soon Chap.
I loaded up on dog food this AM. I am getting too old to hump the bags though. Loaded the cart at Costco, loaded the bags into the car, then I had to carry each bag from the car into our garage. Couldn't get the hand truck out of the garage between the generator and the snowblower so I had to carry all 6 bags by hand. (tried moving the snowblower but didn't feel like it). I could have waited but hubby was up in Bethlehem and wouldn't be home til after I left for work. Didn't want the car to smell like dog food.
(It is supposed to snow tomorrow and I abhor going to Costco on a weekend).

(((Chap)))
We are getting more snow tonight and tomorrow...possibly 6 inches. My grandson's school was scheduled to be closed anyway, so that was a good call.
I don't know if he and his friend are planning to shovel snow again in the neighborhood. They did it for free but a lot of the people insisted on tipping them. They made $70 each.
The post on the county site has over 1,000 remarks now. I am surprised that more kids don't shovel now, but I guess most of the kids now just sit and play with their X-boxes. Jaxson and Isaiah have X-boxes but prefer to be active.

We're getting a winter storm tomorrow that's supposed to dump anywhere from 5-10" on us. My boss already said it's fine if I don't come in (only 4 hour shift). Glad I won't have to deal with it until clearing off and shoveling around my Cube on Saturday when it's supposed to be over. Schools were closed yesterday due to temps around -15 in the morning so I ran errands so I wouldn't have to go out today if it started snowing early. Probably closed tomorrow as well.
labbypaws, you're not kidding about avoiding Costco on weekends. DH insisted we go and sign up a couple Sundays ago and it was hard to look at anything with so many people everywhere. Even he said we'd never go on a weekend again.
Chap, thanks for the encouragement and every time I check the pedometer, it spurs me on to keep going.
I remember back when I worked at a NAPA store late 70s to mid 80s, every time someone used a credit card, you had to look through a booklet with pages of tiny print credit card numbers that were no good to make sure it wasn't there, then put the card on metal plate, put triplicate paperwork with carbon paper between, slide piece across top to make imprint of card, have customer sign and give then top or middle copy. We either gave them the carbon or tore it up in front of them because thieves would pilfer trash to steal the carbons with numbers, names and expiration dates (this was long before the 3 digit number on back of card).

A crowded weekend at Costco: Bumper cars! I found these little shards while hiking through a field in Norfolk County - apparently the farmer finds these when he (or she) tills and just drops them onto a wooden tray they've nailed to one of the fences next to the path. These two looked interesting. I think the larger fragment is Victorian, the smaller one may be that or a bit earlier. The DH didn't want to stand around while I tried to match pieces lol. Metal dectecting is very popular in the UK, and periodically someone turns up a real hoard, often in Norfolk Cty near Norwich which was part of the Roman occupation (and Iceni territory) - last one was gold coins of exceptional quality found by amateur archeologists with metal detectors in the fields around Norwich, dating from just before the Roman occupation. So far, all I've found is an old, dead water bottle and a crisps wrapper, but I don't have a metal detector.

Chap, if you and DH move there, you can get a metal detector and hike and treasure hunt at the same time. Sorry, forgot to say I hope you feel better asap.
DH came home and announced he was sick and it came on a couple days ago (of course, I've kissed him several times already). BIL is sick as well and took 2 days off work. Must have picked up something on the trip to KY over the weekend. I've already told DH to stay away from me and better not get me sick. Right now he's having occasional cough.
I read awhile back in London you have to get very lucky to be chosen by lottery(?) to be able to treasure hunt around the Thames, that must be a wealth of history underwater.

We already have 5-6" of snow and still coming down very fine and not supposed to stop until early tomorrow. Glad I didn't have to go into work today. Schools are closed everywhere. I'm amazed at the P.O. still delivering mail regardless how bad it is. I think the only time they didn't deliver mail was way back when we got around 18" dumped on us.
Trying not to look outside, too depressing. White sky, everything well coated in snow and other than a few evergreens and shrubs, the trees are nekkid stick figures. Grateful power's on. Next week will start out in 30s and mid 40s by midweek so this should be melted off again. One thing I like about last few winters is when we've gotten accumulation, it's warmed up to melt it off before the next round. Another positive is sunset's already about an hour later at 5:30pm. Focusing on the positives sure beats the negatives.

Filed the state this morning. Local website not available yet.
We are also getting some snow. Maybe 3-5 inches. Can’t get Smokey to stay still long enough to get photos. Snow started about 7 AM. Luckily the trash guys still came as they didn’t pick up on Tuesday due to the ice. We don’t have much trash but with 6 dogs we have a lot of dog waste. It gets heavy this time of year due to the rain and snow.
Going to be cold the next few days. Trying to get myself on the treadmill.
