It's January 14. On this day in 1954 Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio. This actress was born on January 14, 1941. Do you recognize her?

Currently 7 degrees at 9am, feels like -15. At least the sun's out. Going out to at least toss bag of trash across the lot and maybe go to "the store" for a few groceries. Looks like the deep freeze is down in KY where DH is so it won't be a surprise to come home to this weather. Only supposed to feel like -8 when I leave for work tomorrow at 5am. Only got coating of white stuff and only hope there's no ice anywhere I need to walk. MIL lost power for 1 1/2 hours yesterday. There were outages too close to us (she lives exactly one mile away), but thankfully, never lost it here.
Pic is Faye Dunaway. Loved her as Bonnie Parker in "Bonnie and Clyde" and she was a scary lookalike as Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest".
Stay warm, everyone!

Not too cold but the wind chill was bad. Supposed to have some snow squalls today. Waiting to see what Tuesday brings.
Got almost everything but our work W2’s into turbo tax. They should be out Wednesday. I think they start accepting them the 29th. Hope to be in the test batch again.

We have cardinals here flying around all summer, but I have never, ever seen one in winter. All we have is plenty of Canadian geese everywhere year round.
Just got home from getting groceries. It's crackling crispy cold outside. Not bad if you're properly dressed. Sun is always psychologically uplifting. Wind has died down, but even small gust reminded my unprotected face how cold it is. Down parka kept me cozy warm that even the wind couldn't penetrate. I'm ready for the next 2 weeks of freezing weather.

It's a bit cold down our way today. It's 32 right now with a wind chill of 23, not as bad as forecast but still cold. Hard freeze warnings for the next three nights, very cold wind chill warnings, and possible rain/sleet/ice overnight. Soooooo happy I work remote (although tomorrow is a holiday so no work). This is pretty much how it looks at my house and Kritter's house:

24 right now. Got my walk in. Snow this evening into tomorrow.
The oil delivery guy came Saturday to deliver oil. They used to call the day before so we would make sure the dogs were inside the house. They won’t do that anymore. Guy came to the door but I was out walking. I had called them a week ago and told them the]at the dog door would be closed for the next few weeks and to go ahead and deliver. Ugh. Thinking about changing oil companies.
If they can send appointment reminders for the vet, doctors hair salons, why can’t they do it for oil deliveries?

28 degrees here. Nice and chilly in the apartment, the way I like it. Snow is expected tonight. We have yet to have a single flake this winter so who knows if it will come. Psychopoodle is in her pink sweater snuggling with me. No complaints.

Does that mean he didn't deliver any oil, labby? I woke up to find all the cats up on the sofa with me. Guess Trixie thinks it's OK to share the space if it's cold. Sounds like you're warmer than we are, frakin. . It's 23 right now. Most of the ice hit just north of me. Lots of overpasses and bridges iced but that's about it. Around 5:30 am, ERCOT requested customer energy conservation between 6-10 this am. If TX did like the other 47 continuous states and belonged to one of the federal regional power grids, they wouldn't have had to worry about meeting customer demand. Fortunately the power outage was limited to only 3,000 customers. Wasn't in my neighborhood though. Guess I better crawl out of the covers and finish packing up the indoor Xmas decorations

Wow, guess our current 24 degree temp is a heat wave compared to the rest of you! Our blizzard Saturday ended up being about 2" of tiny ice pellets that froze into a hard sheet the first night. The freezing weather will end Tuesday with a grand finale of freezing rain/snow mix just like always. Looking forward to our regular January 50 degree drizzle to resume Thursday. Stay safe & warm everyone!

Hi guys, hope everyone is staying warm! Right now it's 28 and feels like 16 which is extremely cold for Houston It is safe to say we are NOT acclimated to it! We went to the bins yesterday and fortuitously DH found a jacket for Janey lol. She doesn't care what I put on her as long as we are taking a walk (she has a rain coat, too) so she wore it this morning. We are supposed to warm up to 66 Thursday before another cool down and I am really looking forward to it!
Speaking of the bins, yesterday I noticed several people brought their own chairs. Seriously. They look like this: Then they literally plant them in front of a bin and sit. One guy was actually eating a fast food meal. No one says anything?! Has anyone else experienced this? I constantly have to say Excuse me then they act like I am the one with nerve!
Well, I meant to address Val's question on last weeks thread, but I never made it back here. She asked if I ever went to the doctor for my toe. The answer to that is no I didn't and now I wish I had. The day it happened was the day before Thanksgiving and I had a pie in the oven and company coming the next day and of course I was thinking I won't be able to get in to the dr and the ER will cost a fortune, and it's only a sprain. Plus I had two thrift store Black Friday sales, one Friday and one Saturday. And they're important not just because it's 1/2 off but also that's how I earn a coupon for both Dec and Jan. But realistically it still would have been a good idea to even go in the next week, like you said just maybe to get a boot or something. But I was like, ugh I don't want to hassle and what can they do anyway. But weeks went by and it wasn't healing as fast as I was hoping so I ordered the splint. And it seemed to help but then the itching started. So I had do do the icing. Then the next day it actually started to feel better! Lol, I think it was coincidental timing as actually at that time it was about 8 weeks. So now it seems to be feeling noticeably better, and perfect timing as I had to wear my regular walking shoes this morning, the crocs weren't going to cut it, and they were fine. But lesson for the future, for sure. Wait a minute, lesson to pass on to others, I never plan to fall or trip again

It's 21 degrees here with a feel-like temp of 13 degrees. We have had snow on and off, but it's only a few inches.
At 4:30 my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers will play against the Buffalo Bills. The game was supposed to be held yesterday, but they have a ton of snow. And they still do have a lot of snow as a lot of guys are trying to clear off the field and the seats. They walk to the stadium and are paid $20 an hour to shovel.
edited to add...they showed the stadium online. The field is clear but the seats all have about 2 feet of snow on them.

I'm back in the US. It's cold here, too - it was in the teens but now in the 20s. RetroMonde - you guys have some awful ice storms! We're also looking forward to good old 45 degrees and drizzle. Anyway, we got in last night - it was an easy flight (about 10 hours non-stop) - I've had some very tumultuous overseas flights and this one was smooth as butter save for one blip over Greenland where we dumped around a bit for a few minutes. I don't mind turbulence save if I'm stuck in the head and it starts up - that gets awkward. This morning I went to Orangetheory - I hadn't been in two months and the first thing that happens is one of the head coaches greets me enthusiastically and welcomes me back, then the rest wanted to know where I'd been! I show up and quietly work out, along with everyone else, not remarkably in any way, so I was surprised, it was really nice. I really dogged through that workout, though, feeling the jet lag a bit. ETA: Started listing again last night.

Does that mean he didn't deliver any oil, labby? Yes. No delivery. Supposed to try to come back Wednesday. I will put a sign on the front door and another one on the gate saying it is ok to deliver the oil.

My neighbour with ALS died a few weeks ago - I just found out today. She had been diagnosed with it about two years previously when she began to have trouble hitting keys on a keyboard for her recording job. She had a last good Christmas with all of her family and apparently one night upped her morphine a little and just slipped away. I think there must be a liminal space where an individual realises when it's time to walk on, because I know another who was just on the threshold and let his oxygen go, also an uncle who hung on until his last child, a son who was struggling hard to get to him from his ship off Dutch Harbor, finally made it, looked into his eyes, then passed. It's not suicide, it's just pausing on the threshold for a last look back.
She's been my neighbour for 18 years, and the DH's neighbour for about 30 years. It's just her partner and his little grandson now in the house (her partner had lost his daughter only a year ago, and they took in the little grandson) - he has had to give up his job as a morning bus driver to make sure his grandson gets off to school (kindergarten) OK and is hoping he can get on at another shift as he really wants to keep the house.
Make every day count.

Well, our 3" of predicted snow is at 6" so far. My grandson's school is canceled, so he shoveled sidewalks in his neighborhood (for free), then will do 2 hours of online schooling.
Then he plans to go back outside to shovel more sidewalks. My little boy is growing up!

Awwww. A lady posted on our neighborhood site on Facebook about my grandson and his friend, who shoveled and salted her walk. So now everyone is posting about it, and I am sure that makes the boys feel so good.
They are doing it for free, but the people are insisting on tipping them.

Hi all, it's been a hectic couple of weeks. 28 degrees here and 5 inches of snow today.
Jan 3rd, BF's father was killed in a head on accident, he was 83 and accident was his fault, it has been a very emotional 2 weeks. Burial was in WV so we were there for 5 days helping set up the service and burial. Now coordinating with police, insurance, tow company trying to get his personal items and truck turned over the insurance company and settle all the affairs then I guess wait for the lawsuit. The other guy was hurt badly and I think BF's dad was under insured. Not sure how all the works but preparing everyone for the worst just in case.
Also now is trying to get his mom organized to pay bills and handle the house. I really needed a few more years before I did all this again. Unfortunately her house is just full of stuff so here we go down another deep clean, purge, organize road. I am exhausted as is BF, we finally got to sleep in our own bed last night for the first time since the 3rd. The road was probably the most dangerous road in our area and we think he had a medical event that caused him to cross the double yellow, he was not a wild driver but we will never know.
Hopefully the rest of 2024 will swing upward from here.

Alli-so sorry for his death! If it was a medical event, that should be verified to ward off any lawsuits. It is great that your BF's mom can get help from you. Hang in there!

Very sorry to hear of both sudden deaths! It's always a shock even if someone has ill.
I was right... after 2 days of temps in the low-mid 20s the freezing rain has begun to coat everything :-( Fingers crossed our power stays on 🤞
