January 7 was a big day for comic strips. In 1929 "Buck Rogers" and "Tarzan" first appeared in newspapers. In 1934 "Flash Gordon" made its debut. Do you recognize this journalist, born on January 7, 1957?

Interesting. You get more than free shipping with a Prime membership on Amazon. I canceled my membership and now several items in my cart have increased in price. There's a note showing the lower price with a Prime membership. Even more annoying, AMZ doesn't honor the free shipping for non-prime orders over $35. All the items in my cart are shipped by AMZ and the order is well over $35. Yet AMZ is charging me shipping. I may have to reconsider my membership.

That is weird because I just placed an Amazon order for a little over $39 and got free shipping. I don't have Prime and have never had Prime.

That's Katie Couric in the pic. I remember her from the Today show with Matt Lauer for so many years.

I figured it out. "Free shipping" without a Prime Membership is based on the delivery date you select at checkout. If I'm happy with it taking a week to get to me, I get free shipping. Hmnn. I'll have to see what the Prime savings is on the items with a Prime discount and decide if it's worth it or not.

I have prime. It said I was $8 from getting free one day shipping. So I added a package of gum. I got 2 things today at 4 AM and the rest is coming tomorrow. 🤬. I didn’t need the gum that bad. It is cheaper at Walmart when they have it.

Desire is correct! Unfortunately there's no prize other than bragging rights, for what they're worth.

Hi, hope everyone is doing well. DH is much improved. After the dr appointment he started feeling better pretty quickly. He's still just a bit more tired than usual and is still coughing up some of the mucus but it's broken up so much now and he feels almost 100%.
I did a big photo session yesterday with the new mannequin. Benefit 1. She's easier to dress and undress because her arms are easier. Benefit 2. She's lighter and easier to manage in that way. Detriment 1. Her hips want to swivel and that makes it more difficult to turn her around (I have to hold her by her lady parts) and detriment 2. Her feet want to swivel a bit on the stand. So I guess it's a wash, two things are easier and two things are harder lol. But at less than 1/2 the price, it's all good.
It's a lovely sunny day here, but a big chance of rain tomorrow. They are saying there's an arctic front next weekend, but they don't know if it will make it this far into Southeast Texas. I can live without it
My daughter put me on her Amazon account a few years back, as a family member. She pays for it, and I get the benefits lol. Truth is, I've gotten so used to having it, it would probably be hard to get used to NOT having it. But I'm not sure if I could justify the expense to myself, either.

The Prime membership is worth it if one uses Prime Video or Prime Music. Unfortunately, more and more shows on Prime Video are no longer free, even with a Prime membership. Plus the free shows have commericials. I don't mind waiting longer for my AMZ order. It's the Prime discount on items that I'd never noticed. I'll have to look at what I usually order and see if they're any lower with a Prime membership. Right now, though, the product discounts aren't enough. I'll leave the membership canceled Sunny and mid-60s outside. It's nice if you're in the sun. There's enough wind that if you're in shade, it's a bit chilly. I took my donations to GW this morning. I'll probably have another batch to go once I get the Christmas packed up and furniture rearranged.

I have an Amazon Kindle Unlimited membership, but that's it. I don't see a need for Prime as I don't buy much (and I always order when I have enough for the free shipping threshold) and don't stream (don't really watch videos) - if they had enough audiobooks that I'd make the membership worthwhile I would consider it, but so far, no. I get my music elsewhere. But I go through books like crazy so that Unlimited membership is really worth it.
We're in Winchester now and the rain has finally stopped. We did a real leg-burner of a hike out into the South Downs. This part of what I love so much about England: View from the Downs looking over to Winchester. You can get almost immediately out into the countryside from almost any provincial town and there are paths everywhere.
At the top of St Catherine's Hill, we see the St. Cross monastery and alms house, built in the 12th century - 25 monks live there and they continue to help the poor.
Tomorrow we visit the mighty cathedral, where I will go to the back end of beyond (it's the biggest cathedral in Europe and quite a trek walking through it). I tend to poke my nose into odd corners, and in the old Norman section where hardly anyone goes - the floor is 1000 years old and hard-trodden, and they've piled up extra chairs and other junk - there, alone, is the casket of an unknown knight, his effigy carved atop with startled Anglo-Saxon eyes, with his sword and shield. No indication of who he is or where I might find his name. I'll visit this poor nameless knight again, among the collapsible chairs and spare lighting stands, maybe he will appreciate it.

DH has the Prime membership under his account, then he shared it with me as a member of his household. I check the prices of more expensive items under both of our accounts before I order. I frequently find a price difference or a coupon on one account but not the other.

Prime also gives you preferential shipping. i actually did need something rather quickly and under my non-prime account it would be more than a week, not even a paid choice to expedite.
i switched to my daughters prime account and had the choice of next day/free shipping so i bought it from hers.
i dont shop that much on amz, but when i do i usually need it fast. (and yeah i know she can add me to hers--i just like having a separate account)

Visited the Lonely Knight and found that his area had been all cleaned up - the chairs and other lumber had been moved and the chapel at the back restored! It's the oldest section and I can seen the old, worn wall in the chapel, nicely preserved and cleaned up. Still no name, though - his effigy has been placed on a newer plinth, probably a survivor of Cromwell and the Puritan desecration. His in the 11th century portion of the cathedral.
Anglo-Saxon carving style:
Here's a little home dec - 12th century tiles:
Flippable seat (also known as a miseracord or 'bum rest') for when those services get too long and you need a place to lean. The Green Man (depicted here)mand other Celtic and pre-Christian symbols are everywhere in many cathedrals. The seat is flipped up at this point - about 13th century or so:
Live next door in the close!
As we were visiting the ruins of Cardinal Wolsey's house next door (the current bishop lives in a 17th century house built on top of some of the ruins, and behind others) it started to snow.

Glad you liked the photos! I love seeing photos others post here.
Tonight decided to go on a mini-pub crawl. First a couple of streets down to a sports pub near our flat for a pint of the local ale - watched a bit of soccer. Then went back the other way a few streets past our flat (which is in a semi-residential area) into a small place where you have to step down and duck to get in, then squeeze through two doors. Once in, we found a funky room with three fiddle players, a guitar player and an accordion player all sitting around a corner table playing very good celtic music, and an elder woman got up from where she had been sitting with friends and poured us some pints. There were tables of others chatting, including a large table in the back room where a meeting was going on. We had our second pint, listened to music and chatted, then left, everyone bidding us goodbye, and stepped out into the dark, quiet street again. It was like a little oasis of light and music in a dark world. Really old place with teapots and coffee cups mixed with the beer and wine glasses, the proprietor living upstairs.
Tomorrow we have to earn our pub dinner so will do 10 miles along the South Downs trail which goes further into the rolling countryside - I wonder if we'll have more snow?
ETA: Val - I told the DH about the suggestions for watching the Huskies, but he says he just can't stay up all night. He was reading pre-game, though, and said Huskies are already gathering for the game, and Dubs the team dog was already there posing!

Don’t know what triggers it but sometimes when am placing an order on Amazon I am offered a “free 30 day trial” membership. If I accept, i have to agree to automatic prime membership renewals at the end of the 30 days…unless I cancel before renewals begin. If I accept I make a reminder note on my calendar to cancel at day 29. Occasionally when I go into my account to cancel I am given another offer for a week or even a month at a lower price because “we hate to see you go”. I never accept that. Last year I had 2 “free 30 day trial” Prime memberships. Val2525, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those offers pops up for you this year. Curious to hear if that happens for you. I have read complaints that it is difficult to cancel a trial membership, that Amazon makes it a tricky multi step process but I have not found that to be true. In fact, on more than one occasion, I recall having the option to receive reminders from Amazon about the trial period ending.

I get that same offer on every Amazon order before I place the order. Every.Single.Time.
I never accept the order because I don't need Prime but Amazon keeps putting it out there for me.

What a miserable day! Ice storms on and off all night. 2 hour school delays because of icy roads. 60 mph winds, cold and icy rain now. Trees down, accidents, power out in a lot of places. So far I still have power.

@chap-fascinating pictures! What is your avatar picture? It's an overgrown path near Winchester from last year. It was like a tunnel fighting our way through! Usually paths are pretty well trodden despite there being so many (public footpaths are everywhere) because walking/hiking is a national sport here. Many areas have their own walking clubs where people gather at a certain rail station, take the train somewhere and do a day walk, usually about 10-20 miles with always a lunch stop at a good pub, and then a tea stop later on at another good pub. We used to walk with the London Saturday Walking Club when we stayed there, but haven't hook up with the one in Norwich - they're hard cases and a lot of their walks are 15+ miles up to 25 miles. Paths are way posted and some of them have been used continuously since the Iron Age. You can go village to village through fields and down little narrow roads and tracks.
Today we went on the South Downs Way path toward a high point oddly named "Cheesefoot Head" with a couple of climbs. It was freezing with a biting wind but we bundled up, and hit snow and ice from yesterday as we got a little higher. Brilliant sunny day!
labbypaws - we saw someone walking five labs today! They flooded along before her, tails wagging and with big doggie smiles. I immediately thought of you.

The winds have died down so it's not so bad in the sunlight. Well, not to me anyway I was supposed to be off today, but a client needs financials by Friday to buy an office building so it looks like I'm working today and off on Friday. I can live with that.

I think that the wind is dying down now, but it is dark, so I don't see the huge pine trees beside my house bending over. One of those 200-year-old pines could crush my whole house.
I asked my daughter about putting me on her Amazon account, but she doesn't know her password. I will suggest that maybe she can change her password.
She is experimenting with her new Ninja air fryer and does like it.
They finally worked the stuck TV loose from her stairs down to the family room, and got it into the room via the basement door.

Rain slowed down here. Still windy. Moved a couple of huge branches at work but otherwise stayed in the car at work. PITA to reset all the clocks at home but will wait until tomorrow so I am sure the power won’t go out again.

We have a weather roller coaster coming up. today and tomorrow, sunny and high 60s-low 70s. Cold front on Friday with very gusty winds. Then back to low to mid 60s for the weekend, and an arctic cold front coming in Sunday night and very cold temps (for us) for most of next week. I predict Kritter will be out doing yard work today and tomorrow before we get cold again I think I'll make assorted soups in the slow cooker next week. I've been wanting a good, scratch made mushroom soup. Maybe a crock of chili too. The last batch was meh - I tried a new recipe that wasn't very good. I'll use my regular one this time, but think I'll add some chorizo.

Slow cooker soup sounds like a good idea It will be cozy to have something warm and hearty. I might make some cookies or brownies as well. What's a better excuse to bake? Lol
Chap, thanks for sharing the pictures, they are fascinating! So much history.
Winds were crazy here yesterday, too. And cold! Today is super pleasant, after a frosty morning. I just ordered more Hot Hands, I slip them in my gloves when I walk Janey anytime it's under 40 or so and they help. Then later they help me keep my mouse hand warm when I'm on the computer
