Lost one of my ferals last night

Sweet Eliza. She didn't get along with the rest of the colony so had her own outpost which was set up pretty nicely with her shelter box on a pallet, and a hinged piece of wood over the top and down one side to give her a covered porch area. I'd gotten in the habit of a 2nd feeding over the winter when everything was freezing all the time and now that the weather is nice it is nice to just walk around after hours and spend a little time with them. Anyway, I went down to give her dinner and she was meowing and panting and hopping around on three legs, running from me (which she doesn't usually do) - I thought she'd broken her leg. She had a blood clot and probable heart failure with fluid in her lungs. The emergency vet didn't think her prognosis was good even if they could clear the clot, so we had to let her go. She's been with us a year and a half and probably wasn't even 3.

It seems so young, but sometimes that happens. She had a very good life with you.

What a cute little girl. So sorry for your loss. You gave her such a nice life for a feral, so although she didn't have quantity, she had quality. (((Hugs)))

Thank you all. We cleaned up her area today - not sure if it will be sadder to drive up the driveway and not see her set-up or if it would have been worse to look over there and see her area empty. After that it got busy with visitors, so that helped to not sit there all day trying to focus on computer work.

I put a few daffodils in the hollowed out, broken off, but still somehow growing tree she liked to hide in and will put a stone with her name on it in there at some point too.
