I've been clipping fresh basil from my little indoor garden and waiting for the yellow peppers to begin to pop out. I like this little click n' grow garden so much that I may purchase another, larger, one, though they're spendy (my cousin gave us this little starter one) they do begin to pay for themselves after a while, and there's nothing like herbs and veg straight from the garden.
When you find one, would you please post a link? That sounds interesting.
Still raining here. At least it's a good excuse to postpone taking the boxes to the dumpster. I've been waiting 3 weeks now for my cardio doc to let me know if he's changing my BP meds. He's pushing for an ablation, I'm resisting because to me, it makes more sense to get the BP under control first, given that he thinks the cause of why I need an ablation is due to high blood pressure. I'm also starting to get really annoyed. It seems to me that docs are suddenly pushing for all kinds of stuff because I have Medicare and Medicare doesn't ask a lot of questions. I may make a PCP appointment and let him deal with it. My regular cardio won't be seeing new patients at his new practice until May 1st. Arrgghh.
Oh well, can't do anything about it today and it's Easter weekend. We'll be in the low 70's Sunday so all the ladies will be able to wear their Easter dresses without worrying about being cold (it's 52 right now)
Sounds great Val! Except that I would have to cover the whole thing with deer netting.
Seems to me it would be easier to cover a vertical garden with netting that a large plant bed.
Found some pics:
If it was my yard, I think I'd have painted the pallet in the last pic and then found a way to put it up on the fence. More finished looking. But you get the idea.
Good Friday hasn't been that good at MIL's. A couple days ago, her microwave quit working (easiest fix- DH ordered a switch to replace bad one. He's getting good at repairing microwaves). She and SIL are using the one I bought when I thought ours was a goner that DH had downstairs in his "man cave area". Our cable/internet/phone went out around 8:45am this morning so he got dressed and left. Good thing he stopped at MIL's because her not-very-old refrigerator went out long enough for ice cream to melt. The old, small one is on the enclosed porch, but SIL for whatever reason didn't attempt to move some not heavy things in front to be able to plug it in so DH had to do that. Her "helpless" bit is getting really old. Lastly, I started a load of laundry as usual, came upstairs and then SIL told me the washer wasn't draining. It would have been nice to have left a note on the washer BEFORE I started it. Turned out it screwed up on final rinse, which I was able to get it to do, but lid was locked and wouldn't unlock. Pressing button to shut off didn't work, nor unplugging and plugging back in. It finally decided to unlock so at least I could get wash out. Another thing for DH to see if he can fix. Thanks to YouTube videos, he's turned into quite the "Mr.Fix-it".
Luckily, cable/internet/phone came back up around 10am. I'm glad it was just that and not electric going out. We were fortunate we only got a good soaking rain the other day instead of severe storms predicted. Temp hit over 80 on Wed. and back in 40s for highs until next week, which will be warmer. Getting break from rain, too, for about a week and lots of sunshine, whoo hoo!
Those are cute Val. I devise a fence in front of my shrubs and plants and anchor each end on Shepherd's hooks. Then I hang a pot of artificial flowers on each hook, so the deer won't eat those.
I don't actually have a square plant bed in the middle of my yard, just rows of stuff against the house walls...shrubs and plants in the front and plants and veggies in the back.
For your suggestions, I'd have to hang a fence at the top to cover all of the plants and anchor them on the ground.
It was cloudy, cold, and sprinkling on and off all day, yesterday was sunny and so warm.
If anyone likes baked stuffed shrimp but doesn't want the hassle of preparing, trying to stuff them and then baking the individual shrimp, here is a good recipe for an easier version in casserole form that I make several times a year. Just finished making one and it's in the refrigerator ready to go into the oven. This is so simple to prepare.
Ingredients: 1 bag of extra large (40 ct) frozen cooked peeled shrimp (2-lb bag for 9 x 13 size casserole) 1 stick melted butter 1/4 cup white cooking wine 1/2 cup water 4-5 full sleeves of Ritz crackers 5 individual saltine crackers 1 tablespoon parsley flakes Optional minced garlic (I do not use this)
Defrost the frozen shrimp, pull off the tails, dry the shrimp and put aside. Keep out 5-6 pieces of shrimp to cut up into small pieces to add to the stuffing mix or use crabmeat chunks. Pour the Ritz crackers, two opened sleeves at a time into a plastic bag and use a roller to crush them up. Put all the crushed Ritz crackers into a large mixing bowl. Add 5 crushed saltines to the crumb mix. Pour the stick of melted butter over the top of the crumb mixture. Add 1/4 cup white cooking wine Add 1/2 cup water Add 1 tablespoon parsley flakes Add the chunks of the 5-6 cut-up shrimp or crabmeat that was put aside. Mix all of this until fully blended, add a bit more water if too dry.
Take the casserole dish and spray it with PAM spray. Lay the dried shrimp out in a single layer on the bottom of the casserole dish. Spoon out several hunks of the crumb mixture onto the top of the shrimp. Spread the crumb mixture evenly to cover all the shrimp. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the shrimp is bubbling and the topping is just slightly browned.
Our large chain supermarket has bags of frozen shrimp on sale quite often, especially around the holidays. I usually buy them when on sale and just keep them frozen until ready to use. It's an economical way to have a nice shrimp dish that tastes similar to baked stuffed shrimp using the same stuffing mix.
This is our little garden - I started it in early January, and through the dark months it sprouted and grew, adding cheer to the windowsill, and how I've been clipping fresh basil. The middle plant is yellow pepper and hadn't bloomed yet. It's great for herbs and small veg like hot peppers, though my cousin often plants flowers in hers, as well.
You can get them on Amazon, or on their own site. They're not cheap but they're really nice. You can get their pods or use your own (the come with basil pods).
I can see why those mini gardens are pricey. Looks like they come with their own lighting so you can grow them anywhere, even with low to no light conditions.
The bad luck continues. DH got up this morning to make bacon and saw one of the kitchen ceiling lights was shorting out and sparking, so he took off the globe and found bare wire. Wish me luck getting hold of our office because they're so inaccessible unless you bang on the locked door and there's someone inside to let you in to put in a maintenance request. Email and phone messages get ignored, too. I'll write up a request and drop it in the outside box and hope it gets picked up Monday morning and gets fixed asap. The one bright spot living here is the maintenance guys are awesome.
Stay, I'm surprised your complex doesn't have an after hours emergency number to contact. Here, that would be considered an emergency and there would be an electrician out ASAP. Maybe not that night, but definitely the next day. Will covering it with electricians tape help in the interim? Might keep it from sparking at least.
Amazon is definitely preselling items that aren't in stock right now. I was looking at a plant stand I bought. The 3 shelf version (what I have) can be delivered tomorrow. The 4 shelf version? Next month.
Needless to say I'll look for something else. High 60s and sunny on tap here today. Should be a decent day. I have to box up some returns and take them to a UPS Store. I'm debating if I want to put in a curbside pickup at Michaels or go inside and look for the stuff before I buy it. I think that decision calls for another cup of coffee and some breakfast.
Val, we do have emergency number, but prefer our own maintenance people fix (2 of the 3 guys have been here for many years and amazing to see how fast and efficient they are since they've done same repairs so many times over the years (there are 288 apartments in the complex). They're also very friendly and being here as long as we've been, they're pretty quick to fix anything that needs fixing. There's another ceiling light in the kitchen so no emergency. DH did put black electrical tape over the switch to prevent us from turning on the bad one. Need 2 ceiling lights because kitchen is interior with no windows.
Nothing gets me hitting the "back" button faster than seeing delayed shipping like that, even though a lot of the time it will be a lot sooner.

Do you have access to the breaker? Shut off the breaker until it gets fixed.

Breaker box is open (it's in our hallway) but guess he can't shut it off without affecting the other light we need. He took bulbs out and taped over the switch so we wouldn't unwittingly turn it on.
Thanks to you, kritter, not giving up on him. He has to be one of the, if not "the", greatest success stories you've had.
It might be a tie between Barney and Terrell. Terrell was on medication for his skin issues for almost a year after he and Chanel were dumped in their carriers in an alley.
Terrell definitely wins the top prize for being the most expensive cat rescue and for the longest rescue on medication. I would not want to go through that year with him again.
Chap...that is so neat! My window sills are too narrow, though.
That's what is so great about the little indoor gardens - they don't require a window sill! Or even a window, TBH. That's what the grow light is for. I was looking on Amazon and the prices are all over the place (as are the reviews, LOL).
I hope everyone is having an enjoyable Easter!
I finally put my two Ikea shelving pieces together. One, I had to look at 3 different videos to see how to assemble it. The written instructions were useless. Two of the videos didn't have a close up of the step that was giving me problems, but the third one did. Whew. It looks really nice but it's way too big for the space I wanted to use it in. OTOH, it will look really good in the office when the yard sale stuff is gone (only 26 more days!). The other one is probably one of the easiest things Ikea has to assemble, but the screws are short and fat and the spaces where the holes are located are really tight. So assembling it was somewhat annoying It looked really good in the space I originally wanted to put the other unit. So good actually I went yesterday and bought a second one. At least I'll know how to assemble it.
Just slopping along in the rain here - it's a good day to finish my taxes for 2022 and get a start on 2023, which I finally did. Had planned a long run but got up with a headache and stuffed up so I'll wait to see how I feel tomorrow. The weather won't change lol so I won't plan around that!
