Hi All, Its been beautiful weather here in Iowa for about a week.. Highs in the 70's lows in the 40's and I know its too early but went out mushroom hunting yesterday.. It was too early.. And going out tomorrow, later but still probably too early.. The shrooms need warm weather and moisture and its been dry lately.. My family has a large timber where I have mushroom hunted for decades.. Every year I challenge myself to jump the creek at least once during a hunt and I still did it.. Anyone else into hunting or know someone who is? Having any luck??

I don't, but this reminds me of when I was a kid and my parents would take me mushroom hunting. When we came home in the evening my mom would cook a delicious mushroom dinner. Ahhhh, good times!

I love all kinds of mushrooms but it is too hot, dry and sandy where I am to have any wild ones.
I know they do hunt them further up north where it is cooler and a couple of hours from here up in the mountains.
I have to live vicariously and get mine from the sellers at the farmers market when they start having some.

We hunt for morels here in western Pa. My husband has a mushroom "garden" of logs to grow shitake mushrooms. Just picked the first of the season yesterday. Now I need to get some good steaks.

We love fresh mushrooms but I think it's better for me to just go and buy them at the store. Less of a chance I'll end up poisoning us!

We hunted morels growing up. Mom would fry them up and they were so good. Didn't eat them for years and don't like them anymore. Mom even made me some a couple years ago but bleh guess I lost my love of home fried mushrooms. Hunting mushrooms is pretty popular around here. Gotta watch the snakes though.

We grew some winecaps just in a bed of mulch but I didn't really care for them. My husband sold some to some restaurants around here. He also grows the shitakes on logs. It was a lot of work at first. You have to drill holes in the logs & put in the spores & water a lot. He did that about 3 years ago & we still get mushrooms from them. It takes a lot of watering & judging sunlight & weather. We gather sheep heads, morels & some other local mushrooms that are pretty good.

Our weather has turned now to colder than usual.. I covered my new garden greens for the night and closed the cold frames.. Walked a bit in the woods in a some sunny spots but still too early and now too cold for mushrooms.. We only find morels anymore.. When I was a kid we found and ate goatsbeard, puffballs & elephant ears.. I was poisoned from mushrooms once, by my Dad. Mushrooms that he found in his yard. Luckily I ate the least and he ate the most. lol I wont eat anything that Im not sure what it is anymore..

This is a map you run or in my case map your mushroom walk app. We walked a 82 minute mile. One of the things I like about mushroom hunting.. You get to walk sooo slow! You can see where we were getting lucky. We circled around and around!

This is about 2# of mushrooms.. I am following a few hunters on facebook and they use mushroom baskets. I dont have official mushroom baskets but I do have Easter Baskets... They work too!

Im kindof into taking pictures of my food. Maybe a blog in my future? Anyhow this is how we cook them if you dont have alot. Flour, egg, and lightly breaded with cracker crumbs. If your lucky theres also freshly made rhubarb dipping sauce.
