Chap-that is so sad. Nice of you to offer any kind of help, which means so much.

Well, that was probably the fastest inspection ever. All he really did was turn a couple light switches on and make sure the CO2 detector was plugged in. I'm thinking the company is applying for a loan because they want to upgrade the older apartments on the other side of the lake. Glad that's over so I can finally relax and enjoy the rest of the day.
Sorry to hear about your neighbor, Chap. It's nice you have neighbors who help each other.

Well the talk of the town around here is a water main break on one of the major freeways to several differerent parts of town including Phoenix. Traffic is being rerouted and it's a HUGE mess, clogging up other freeways and surface streets. If there's an accident or fender bender... forget about it. No ETA last I heard either. azdot.gov/adot-news/us-60-remains-closed-tempe-due-city-water-line-break

I bet that is a major PITA, Bliss. IIRC, that's a busy stretch even on weekends.

Our big new here is a huge sinkhole that just keep getting bigger. It is on a main road near on ramp to major highway. There is a quarry within a mile of the hole, this area is known for sinkholes and has been for years but they just keep building and building in the area. Just out of the photo is a brand new Royal Farms convenience store and construction started on a hotel.

That happened back when I worked at a NAPA warehouse. Major freeway had chemical spill that shut it down both directions and it was an an absolute nightmare trying to get home 15 miles away and traffic was still insane miles from the spill as roads were bumper to bumper and the traffic lights weren't timed well so you'd be lucky to make it through after the 10th light change. Didn't help it took 2 days before the freeway reopened. I left work around 5pm and got home around 10pm. Been there, done that and feel for anyone trying to navigate that major headache.
Allikat- I hope nobody was killed or injured when that sinkhole happened. That's really scary.

I am sorry Chap. That disease is just terrible. A fellow cop friend had it for years. His wife refused to make any requests as he was getting his full police pension. He had nursing care and all that. It started with his tongue and speech. They need a cure.

Wow that sinkhole is huge. We have that problem here because of lime.

Just finished mowing/weed eating all the yards. Started out this morning just to clean up the alley side and the part by the driveway and then figured as long as I have all the stuff out, might as well do it all and get it over with for now. Not going to get any cooler any time soon so why not. At least it is done now and I can work on my beds over the weekend. Always in the back of my mind is...Don't get old and sit around doing nothing all day long.

I bet that is a major PITA, Bliss. IIRC, that's a busy stretch even on weekends. It's always busy... the main artery in and out of the east valley. They're saying give yourself an exra 30 minutues but I don't think that's even enough time and I haven't heard of an ETA yet. It might take a few days for the cement to dry when they're done. It's truely a mess. Thankfully it's not a freeway that either of us NEED to utilize.

Wow that sinkhole is huge. We have that problem here because of lime. No one was hurt, it happens all the time around here, it is a lime plant here also. They are mining right in the middle of the city/industrial area now. Once upon a time they were mining out in the middle of nowhere but progress has encroached on them and now they are in the middle which is not safe but developers want to develop. The good old boys network runs deep here and enough money passes hands and you can build anywhere you want. We used to be a little farming community now almost every farm is a housing development with 1000s of homes, expensive homes. The latest round of townhouses that are being built start in the mid 500K range.

That's an impressive sinkhole! We get some of those, too (not as big, though) just from subsidence from the damp - mostly our roads turn into rubble in no time because they break up. We specialise in mud slides, anywhere from a little slump that dumps onto a road, to an entire mountainside that gives way (that was the worst). A bad one actually happened down in Seattle, almost downtown.
But man...that sinkhole looks horrible.

2 years ago a bus fell into a giant sinkhole in the middle of Pittsburgh. Took a long time to do the repairs since there were so many old pipes underneath that had to be replaced. Now they are selling bus sinkhole ornaments and souvenirs.

Several years ago, a 23 acre lake in an expensive St. Louis suburb disappeared due to a sinkhole. Many people had lakefront homes and condos one day, and the next they were next to a muddy quagmire of rotting fish. People whose homes were up for sale had to contend with plummeting property values.

Last evening, these two showed up coming into our property from the wooded area. No doubt they were enticed by the smell from the food cooking on the gas grill on the deck. DIL was outside getting the garden ready when she looked up and saw them coming towards her and the house. She ran inside to get the bear horn but it was dead, not working. I went out with the whistle and started blowing it to steer them away while she yelled at them. They do turn and leave when they get screamed at. Our neighborhood uses the bear horns or whistles to warn others that a bear is in the area. It makes me scared, if we had not been outside those few minutes, the bears would have been right up on the deck trying to open the grill. Most of the time I put food on the grill and it's on there for quite some time while I'm inside with the timer on. They have become a huge menace around here, they are very bold. So many pics of them on patios and decks on our neighborhood boards.

I would definitely not want to live anywhere I had to contend with bears, especially ones getting bolder like that.

The wooded areas that used to surround me have all been turned into housing developments.

We only get the male bears that have been kicked out of the den. Once in a while they wander down this way. They catch them and haul them out to a better place.

We carried bear spray in the RV when traveling. It is a pepper spray canister on steroids, sort of like a fire extinguisher that puts out pepper spray. Thankfully never needed it.

Our state DEP just doesn't care about the bears that have become a huge nuisance here. They come onto properties at all times of the day or night and they are getting to where they just aren't afraid any longer. We never saw any bears whatsoever until the summer of 2020. Then all of a sudden they are in everyone's yards, pulling feeders down, getting into garbage cans, opening grills and coming right into garages and onto patios and decks. Until someone gets hurt from one of these black bears they aren't going to do a thing about it. So many other states have managed hunts to thin down the population or have relocation programs. Our state just lets them rapidly multiply and despite incident reports to the DEP they won't do any type of relocation.

If you and neighbors have videos/pics of the bears being too close and causing damage, I'm sure a local news channel would be interested that hopefully would jumpstart action to protect people.

When the pandemic began and we were mostly in lockdown nationwide, I read in the news that rats were heading out to the suburbs from cities. That was because restaurants weren't open and the rats were no longer able to forage as well in the cities. We have more rats around our suburban area than before but I NEVER see cats outside so rats can multiply freely with few predators. Maybe that's the same for the bears but you'd think the authorities would want to control that population more.

Hit that point on my tolerance chart today where the house has to be cleaned. I get so wound up in my yard work which I would rather do than run the vac. I really need to do a floor to ceiling deep clean but that is not gonna happen anytime soon. Finished living part of the house. Now on to the bedrooms.

We were wondering if they had a secret hunt around the Main Line because we haven’t seen our deer herd in a while. We will see if they come back now that the students are leaving.
Made it through graduation. Started pouring during the reception after the ceremony. Forced everyone to leave early which got us out quicker.

We have rats that come off the ships, particularly down in Seattle, but up here, too, as they migrate. Our cats took care of them almost completely. So far so good with no rats, but now we have coyotes so if we get another pair of cats, they'll have to be indoor cats and we'll have to think of something else if we get rats again. We also have deer but not very many, and they mostly live in the woods up on the ravines.

There is a huge empty lot across the street from my apartment. I don't know how many acres it is but it's large, overgrown, and I've seen deer there. I just noticed a sign yesterday announcing a new XX sq ft distribution center is going to be built there. That surprises me, because it's mostly houses & apartments on this part of my street. There is a new Class A office building (low rise) on the opposite corner from the distribution center. I'll miss the deer and I'm not looking forward to the traffic that is going to result from the construction and afterwards when the center is built. Hopefully I'll be moved out by then.

A grocery store was built on the corner lot about 3 blocks from my neighborhood entrance. It is a smaller footprint store ( a Fareway for those in the midwest) and while I do love their meat counter, the traffic issues are bad. The intersection was not built to handle even half the traffic it does. Then, the city approved a 4 story, low income senior apartment to be smashed in behind it! It is currently being built on what appears to be about half the land it needs to sit on. I don't know if they assume most won't have vehicles or what because the room leftover for the parking would not even fit one vehicle per unit. It's not on the bus line either. Of course, no plans to even look a the intersection for a few years. I have written to the city but maybe I should write to my local political reps as well. The grocery store is nice and the senior income based housing is desperately needed, but it feels like the cart arrived a few years before the horse is even planning on coming around.

pyrex-that sounds like what recently happened in my town. It is right beside my friend's dancing supply store. Three homes were taken over by the city and were razed (they were all rented out and the people were evicted). And a marijuana store was put in there with only 5 parking spaces. No other parking places are available and my friend constantly has to try to get the people to leave her own parking lot since her customers have no place to park, with the marijuana customers parking there.
Turns out that the city planner who pushed the store through was getting a kickback and has been fired and supposedly facing criminal charges.

Building low income housing (regular or senior) and student housing with no access to public transportation makes no sense to me, but it's being done all over the place. A lot of people are apparently clueless about the needs of low income, seniors and even students.
