I taught my cousin how to sale on eBay. She sales mostly home décor. She has almost the same amount of items that I have and she has been doing eBay for about a year. She told me in the last year she has never had to pay any insertion fees. She gets the 100 free and after she uses that up, she keeps getting promotions to list more free. She does not have a store. I am paying for a store, and paying all kinds of listing fees. I am really upset and do not understand how this is fair.

That's how I played the game up until last summer when they made it so only stores could use FP listings & Ebay seriously cut back on free listing offers.
Now the offers seem to be back (1-2 a month) and if that keeps up with my current volume, I won't be keeping my store either.
I know in the past this has annoyed sellers, but it's how Ebay has it set up, doesn't seem unfair to me.

Lot's of people do it that way. I don't think it's unfair b/c any of us can, if we wish. I've thought about it. There are some features that are only avl to store owners & that's why I've kept my store, but not sure if they're really worth it anymore.

I keep my store for branding, make it easy for buyers to find stuff, and vacation settings. I also like knowing I have a guaranteed amount of free listings and don't have to depend on getting offers (as in, didn't get the last two). Plus, I don't do many auctions.

Nothing on eBay is fair!
A year or 2 ago, I was just like your cousin. I couldn't understand why anyone was paying for stores. Then the listing sales dwindled to few, and I took the plunge and opened the store. Now, I don't have to sit on inventory waiting for a sale--losing potential dollars. I have a storefront. I have markdown manager. I have CONTROL over my items. That is what having a store has done for me. It's not about saving $$, it's about better control. And 1% lower FVFs LOL!
And I still get invited to the sales promotions most of the time.

When they had the store upgrade promo, I opted into a year at a time of an anchor store. Right after that the promos started. Oh well.....

I think this will change soon though. I usually just use my free listings as well and don;t have a store. I think in the May update though that it will drop to only 20 free fixed priced listings for those that don't hold a store. Can anyone confirm this?

Non-stores will get 20 any type listings and 20 auction in specific category listings.

Body, you need to sit down and do a cost breakdown to see if store or no store works better for you financially. It's the only way to tell which works best for your selling style.
With the new May changes I think you will find that having a store will be more economical, plus you get the benefits of having an established presence, markdown manager, vacation settings, lower FVFs, etc. But you won't know for sure until you do a comparison.

Thanks everyone, I can see everyone's point of view. You are right Shirley, I need to sit down and do the numbers, I have not done that in a long time. I have been so busy with hubby being sick, but now that things are going better, maybe I can get it done this weekend.

If you ask Jeremy really nicely, he'll post some number crunching tips for you. He's good at that.
