A bit chilly here today. Started out at 30 degrees when I got up and hasn't budged. It's pretty wet out there and the temps are supposed to go down to the 20s tonight. I sure hope we don't have a problem with black ice in the morning. North part of the state is getting hammered. Hope no one was flying anywhere today: A large winter storm brought severe disruptions to flights on Thursday, particularly in the nation’s mid-section.
Airports from Texas to Illinois faced wintry conditions, as an unbroken line of winter storm warnings stretched from Texas to Maine. As of 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, 4,649 flights in the U.S. were canceled, according to FlightAware. It’s the most cancelations in a single day in a year.
North Texas was particularly impacted.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines led the cancelations, over 1,000 of its flights axed, or 30% of its schedule. At its home airport of Dallas Love Field (DAL), 83% of all of the departures and 78% of all of the arrivals were canceled, a total of 357 flights, which includes other operators.
The situation was not any better across the metroplex at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), where over 1,200 flights were canceled. That airport serves as the largest hub for Fort Worth-based American Airlines, which had asked the Federal Aviation Administration to impose a ground stop for its mainline and regional operations into the airport.
Other hubs like Chicago and St Louis also had cancelations. thepointsguy.com/news/winter-weather-cancelations-feb-3/

jesmelric - OMG - in the last year of his life my dad used to walk up and down the hallways of his rest home and when he got tired, would just go into anybody's room and lay in their bed. One of the women residents came into her room and saw this strange man in her bed and shrieked - they got my poor confused dad out of there pronto and had to keep an eye on him. He had his own room, he would just get tired from pacing and forget. I think he had had some mini-strokes towards the end, despite the fact that he was still spry and up and about - they were always trying to keep him in a wheel chair and he would leap out, fall on the floor because he would get lightheaded from the quick movement, get up and start trotting around.

Snowed all day and still snowing. I wanted to go out and clean up on and around my Cube earlier, but really no point because the snow is coming down straight down and the wind is blowing it sideways in different directions. I told DH I'd go to be early with him and get up and help him clear off his van and shovel in front. He's parked next to me so after he's gone, I'll shovel the snow where he was parked. There is a layer of ice under the snow on the windows and the sun's supposed to come out so that should soften or melt it. Glad the changeover was quick so the ice isn't bad. I'm most thankful power has stayed on.

Mom wound up in several nursing homes for rehab from hip surgeries and a heart attack and always had stories to tell. She once had a woman on the other side of the shared bathroom that kept calling, "Nurse, nurse" constantly. Mom said she did that all day for little stuff like wanting a shoelace tied (she was in a wheelchair, not walking anywhere). Then there was the old Indian (from India) guy who had Alzheimers and kept wheeling himself into any room he felt like. One time, woman across the hall was taking a shower and left the doors open. She got out and there he was looking at her. She yelled at him to get out so he wheeled himself out, down the hall to the adjoining room and stared at her from the other side. Another ruckus ensued until he finally left and wheeled himself back down the hall to parts unknown.
At another place, a guy across the hall kept yelling loudly, "Dorothy! Dorothy" (must have been his wife). A nurse or two would try to calm him down, but he'd start up again right after they left and it finally got quiet when they put him in a wheelchair and wheeled him somewhere. One time, he saw Mom and started yelling, "Dorothy! Get over here!" and Mom yelled back, "I'm not Dorothy, I'm not coming over there so just shut up!" and closed her door.
jesmelric- I'm glad the mystery of the missing clothes has been solved and hope your mom will have stories to share with you. The oldsters can be pretty funny whether they want to be or not at times.

Hi. Sorry I haven’t updated on my brother but I have been juggling work, calling and messaging my SIL, and trying to set up 2 iPads in between. Hubby can’t follow simple instructions and I had to help him with AT&T Thursday. Wednesday I got mine set up and got unlimited on all our devices “for $5 more a month”. Got home and got an estimated bill from AT&T stating it would be $75 more a month. So I had to call AT&T on my way to work trying to get that straightened out.
I was going to go see my brother in the morning but he is on the other side of this storm line. He will be at 31 with rain while we are in the 50’s.
Anyway they have been trying to figure out what else may be going on with my brother. They took him off the heavy duty narcotics yesterday but he ended up in respiratory distress. Covid test was neg. His abdomen has been hard as a rock, swollen. So long story short, the surgeon thinks all the goings on are related to the pancreatitis - just that his body acted differently. They inserted an NG tube Thursday to see if they can relieve the pressure in his abdomen. They think his small bowel isn’t working right from all the inflammation.
I did get to talk to him for a few seconds Wednesday and when I called Thursday night, the nurse walked in.
So I may drive out there Saturday if the weather is better and if he is still there. My SIL appreciates my input because she didn’t think of things like that he won’t be hopping out of bed and walking right for a bit. I told her he may go to physical rehab for a few days. 9He has been bedridden since Monday.
Thanks for asking…

We lived just a few miles east of Lancaster PA county for 15 years. The scenery looks very much like I remember except for the buggy that slipped off the road and that lone ghostly windmill generator.

First time DH had to use the snow blower all season. We got 8" of snow, which we desperately need, but I was not happy to go out today & find out they hadn't plowed anything Will be bitterly cold tonight, in the negative numbers, which only happens a few times a year here. Prior to yesterday, we've had less than 2" of moisture in the last 6 months! I feel for all the animals outdoors & I hope they can stay cozy & warm as possible!

I got up around 6:30am to help DH shovel out and clear off his van. What didn't look bad from our apartment turned out to be over a foot of snow at least 6 feet from van to plowed drive with combination of heavy to light to frozen snow and around 6" of snow/frozen snow on DH's van to brush and scrape off. Took the 2 of us probably a half hour. By the time we were done and he left, I was already sweat from head to toe and too pooped to do anything around the Cube other than brush off the snow to get to the shovel and Broomster. I'll go down later to shovel mine out. DH was parked to my left with nobody to the left of him so that's where we piled up the snow. There's nobody on either side of me now so I can leave it on either side. Supposed to see some sun today so that will be welcome after the last 2 days of rain and snow.
And, it's lightly snowing again and supposed to get another 2" today. I feel like standing in the middle of the drive and screaming how much I hate winter up here.

We were in Lancaster 7-8 years ago for a niece's wedding at a fancy schmancy farm venue. The best part of the trip was going away from the main touristy area to a dive bar called Vic's Wayside Inn that we loved the atmosphere, service and food. I also remember the supposedly 5 star venue had the worst beverages (rum and flat, warm Pepsi, anyone, that you can't even taste any rum?) and the best part of the meal were the rolls. The salad would have been great if it had more than 1/4 teaspoon dressing (seriously), puny steak was overdone with no seasoning and potatoes were rock hard. It's the only reception we ever left hungry. Thankfully, there was a pizza place across the parking lot where we were staying so filled up on that when we got back. To top it off, we were greeted in the morning of departure by the overwhelming stench of manure from neighboring farm(s).

There were lots and lots of good places to eat in Chester County where we were, but not in Lancaster County.
The stench was bad in the spring. You could smell it while driving by in your car. They mucked out the barns and then spread the fertilizer in the fields. I once overheard some Amish women talking in a store. An older woman declared it was time for her to go visit her sister in town for a couple of weeks while the s..t was being spread. They speak very crudely about such, especially men who tell each other crude jokes about the animals' habits and their own. I overheard some of that, too.

labbypaws, thanks for the update on your brother and I hope he's feeling better again soon. He is not doing well at all. I am going to check the roads in the morning. If I can get to the turnpike I should be able to get there. It finally stopped raining but now is freezing over. ‘’it seems ALZ has raised its head.

The wind is really getting up here and we're hoping the power stays on - my next door neighbour says he's getting tired of all the power outages. It's almost always just us, too - 1004 (same number) customers up along the ravine next to the swampy area. They must think we're a bunch of hillbillies shooting out the transformers or something, but no, we just have bad luck.
Those Amish - at least their motor has four-hoof drive.

We had power outages this week due to wind, which makes no sense because the winds weren't that high. 15-20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. That's a normal spring day in AZ and NM, and the power lines there don't go down and power go out. TX must have some pretty poor infrastructure.

I am going to head to York in a bit. I just read the visitor policy. They may not let me in with my SIL but we shall see. They salted overnight. Might see if they will allow my SIL to bring a dog (they have small dogs) or if the hospital has a therapy dog.

Good luck getting to York, Labby, and safe travels! We just have our usual comfortable drizzle here. Got all of 3 hours of sleep last night, so gosh, I guess I'll go to Orangetheory and work out.

Many of the power outages had to do with tree limbs hitting the lines due to the wind not just the plain wind blowing. There was an article in one of the news outlet pages about how San Antonio needs to get a better tree trimming strategy in place to prevent the outages cause by overgrown trees near power lines. Can't say for sure but I bet there are a lot more trees here than in Phoenix. The power outage near my area was a blown transformer.

Good to know! I don't see how FedEx stays in biz, much less makes a profit. At least 50% of my orders shipped by FedEx aren't trackable (basically it's " you'll get it when it arrives, we ain't telling you nothing!") and it's very common for the label barcode to be unreadable and replaced (thus adding another day or two). And my favorite, when the package takes the scenic route. My latest one went from NJ to Cypress TX (suburb of Houston) with no problem, but was then sent to Corpus Christi, 3 hrs south of Cypress (and not even on the way between Houston and SA). It's a straight shot from Houston to San Antonio so I guess my rug wanted a day at the beach

Can't say for sure but I bet there are a lot more trees here than in Phoenix. The power outage near my area was a blown transformer. This is the BIG problem around here. The tree branches on all these old ancient oaks that line the back roads are all half-way into the road at the top of the trees, so many towering over the power lines. In the summer when the trees are in full foliage you can almost drive under them on a back narrow road as they are so tall and protrude so far out over the road from each side. In the last few years the new energy company has been doing tree trimming all summer long to try to get a handle on it all, but it doesn't look like they've made a dent in it all. And when the ice and snow loads up on the tree branches in addition to the wind it's even more trouble.

We didn't have any snow this round but we had ice on the tree branches as well as the wind. The city I live in that is surrounded by San Antonio does an alternate tree trimming sweep every year. They do 1/2 of the city one year and then do the other half the next year. We have a lot of old oaks and other big trees and our untilities are not buried so it is necessary to keep the tree limbs away from the overhead lines.

Thanks. Went to see him today and they had him in a chair. Spoke to the internal medicine doctor. She thinks he has turned a corner. His abdominal swelling was down a little. His breathing was better.
I asked about getting him up and walking and also asked if there was a therapy dog at the hospital maybe one could stop by. They are working on getting his digestive system working.
My SIL sent me a message that after I left, they let him walk up and down the hall with help. He did fine.
They think the confusion is Hospital delirium. He is still confused but I am thinking if they get him moving it will help.
The ride out there is 2 hours. Will go see him Friday if he is still there or in rehab.
