...go right ahead and dump it all over your laptop keyboard! I cannot believe what I did. I spilled a bowl of Raisin Bran right down into my laptop keyboard and now the keys don't work or if they do they do correspond to the correct key. Ugh, I cannot believe myself. It as a 3 year old HP that was only around $400 new so I am quite torn between trying to get it fixed and just shelling out for a new one. You can bet I will not be holding a bowl of cereal with the computer in my lap if I do decide to get a new one. It sucks but I am trying to find some humor in it.

Sorry that really stinks. Can you try drying it out?

I let it dry for around 24 hours (this happened Friday morning) but no luck sadly. I do have a co-worker who worked at Best Buy for a few years so I may ask for his advice tomorrow to see if thinks if it is worth getting fixed. I am so torn about what to do, I would love to get it fixed but at the same time I don't want to sink too much money in it since it was not top of the line and will need replaced int he next year or two anyways.

So sorry...hoping there's an easy fix for you! Years ago, I had a supervisor who burned up 3 keyboards on a main frame system by spilling coffee. Thereafter, it was mandated that all employees had to have a protective vinyl cover on their keyboards.

That sucks, so sorry that happened to you. I would probably buy a new one, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Sometimes you can change out the key section on some models because its like a board inside that can be replaced. I did it myself to an old laptop years ago. It had weak keys that kept cracking so I bought 2-3 of the key things and when it broke I would switch it out, eventually I just threw it out completely LOL

I'm so sorry that you did that. I live in fear of that myself as I eat and drink at my desk alot. I need a new computer, but I think I will stick with a tower and keyboard instead of laptop in case it happens again.

Well, while you're finding out about repairs and such, go to Big Lots and pick up a cheap USB keyboard and plug it in. That way you'll a) know if anything else was damaged besides the keyboard, and b) if plugged in keyboard works, you can use the laptop until you decide what to do. You can get them for $10-$20. They work fine.

Oh no!!!! I eat and drink at my desk all of the time. But I mostly use my PC. My laptop was a free reject. So I would be really upset in your shoes.
Hope it works out and that you can use a separate keyboard.

Or go to Goodwill. Ours always have tons of keyboards. I prefer an external keyboard on my laptop anyway, you may find you like it better once you get used to it.

I may have to give an external keyboard a try. Luckily, DBF has a desktop so I have access to a computer until I figure out what to do. We are close to Nebraska furniture Mart (a huge furniture, appliance, and electronic store) and they offer 18 month no interest financing on their computers if I do have to take the plunge on a new one. I also still have that Stella McCartney I found at the thrift. Time to get that listed and maybe add some moolah to the computer fund, lol.

I was going to mention getting a USB keyboard as well. I get Toshiba laptops for about $300 and they seem to last forever, except the keyboards! In fact the one I am on right now is going to need keyboard assistance soon.
You will be able to at least get all the info off the old laptop of you need to before getting a new one.
Sorry this happened I hate days like this!

Sorry to hear that happened to you.
I had spilled coffee on my laptop once (I don't know what I was thinking using the laptop as a tray for my coffee ...) and only 3 keys (j,k,l) we not working anymore. DH was so sweet and wanted to fix it for me, so he opened the laptop up and dried of the coffee. Only after that none of the keys were working anymore. I think he must have broken one of the little wires. I have been using an external keyboard for 2 years now and I'm happy with it, the only drawback is that it take up so much room on my desk.

I don't think milk will dry out by letting it sit, even rice wouldn't work, because even if it dries it's going to leave a thick residue behind. You'll need to crack that baby open and wipe it down if you want to dry it out. The keys may or may not work after you are done but at least you won't have sour milk under your keyboard. An external is a great idea but I'd still clean it because it would ick me out if I didn't LOL.

I haven't ruined any electronics with food mishaps but I've spilled a few too many drinks on my desk dangerously close to inventory. Since I'm super clumsy I decided to buy a few adult size no leak/spill "sippy" type cups with straws that open and close, found some that I really like at Fry's (grocery store).

The computer seems to work so only the right side of the keyboard was damaged. I talked to a co-worker who worked at Best But who says it probably isn't worth it to fix. I think I will end up buying a new one after all. Since we have the desktop though I don't have to be in a hurry to find a new one luckily. Lets just say I have learned my lesson the hard way on this one.
