TAMPA - We are not "kitten" around – a group of furry felines are bringing rock star talent to Stageworks Theatre in Tampa.

The Acro-Cats amuse guests as they ride skateboards, ring bells, roll barrels, walk the high wire, climb ropes, push a shopping cart, jump through hoops, and even run a cat-size agility course.

The founder Samantha Martin is using the stardom to send a bigger message.

All 14 performers used to be shelter cats.

She says her inspiration for the show goes back to her first cat, named Tuna – the one with the cat-tat-tude.

“It started 10 years ago. I had a very special cat, Tuna who came in my life. Her mother had been abandoned and pregnant,” said Martin, “I started training her because she took an interest in learning things.”

One by one she started turning rescues and strays into stars.

“Anytime they do something I like, that I want, I click and give them a treat,” said Martin.

Meaning they don’t work without pay.

“We cook up fresh chicken, tuna, salmon,” said Martin.

Of course each cat still has its own purr-sonality.

“Oz is the clown, Wikkie is the daredevil, Tuna is the star, and Dakota is the diva,” said Martin.

If it didn’t get any better than that – the cats dazzle the crowd with the only cat band in existence. Well kind of, Cluck Norris, the chicken plays the tambourine.

Martin says the show is meant to make people laugh, but she also wants the audience to hear an important message about shelter animals.

“I want people to know you can develop a better relationship with your cat, a lot of behavior problems stem from boredom,” said Martin, “We hope people see the show and are inspired to work with their own cat.”

Years ago I had a cat that retrieved bottle caps... just bottle caps from coke bottles and nothing else.  One day the cat was climbing one of my potted plants and I threw a bottle cap on a near by wall to distract... and he picked it up and kept bringing it back to me... really weird. LOL   And he would retrieve a bottle cap from that day forward anytime I threw one on the wall.

I grew my own catnip back in the day too.  Or I bought fresh in California from one of those hippy stores that raised their own and sold by the ounce from glass jars.  I put the dried catnip in an old white cotton sock with a knot at both ends.  Then I would crunch up the dry leaves with my fingers so the whole sock smelled of cat nip. Every cat I ever had went nuts over my catnip sock toy.  But it had to be FRESH catnip.  They would roll and roll getting high on the cat nip until the sock was wet from carrying it around the house.  And then they would lay around looking drunk...   LOL  I miss having a cat...

Those Acro Cats were here a year or two ago and they are amazing.

Several of the rescues had adoption booths in the lobby of the theater where they performed.

One of the cats there for adoption was such a character that the Acro Cats adopted him as as a trainee for their show.

A cat breeder told me she uses a clicker on her kittens to see which ones responded and will ask for more $ for those kittens.  She bred Maine Coon and Abyssinian cats.  I don't like abbys... too weird.  But maybe I just like fluffy cats like the Maine Coon and the Persians.  But both have hair all over... spent hours brushing them out.  Ha!

I wanted one of these... an Exotic Shorthair  but the kittens were too expensive at that time.  And the best colors were sold first.

There sure are a lot of cat breeds.  Ha!  I can usually spot a Persian face in a crowd... hard to miss that special pansy look.

The vet bills here are out of sight.  A vet costs more than a regular doctor visit.  It is hard to get out of a vets office with less than a $200 invoice no matter why you came in.  My neighbor has a little dog.  He was throwing up (probably from drinking standing water in the yard) or scratching or whatever.  They push all kinds of tests on her every time she brings the dog in and makes her feel guilty if she says no, we just did those tests a couple of months ago and all was good.  Her bill is always $200 - $300 for just check ups on simple visits.  There is nothing wrong with her dog.  Her kid gives the dog people junk food and that is why it pukes it up.  Ha!  And we have a lot of plants/trees causing allergies and that is why her dog is scratching sometimes. How does the average family even afford a dog or a cat with these high vet bills coming in like a house payment?

Another friends cat was dying of old age.  It was $400-500 everytime she bought the cat in.  And the cat was in a lot of pain.  It was hard to listen to the little meows!  She just could not let the cat go and the vet was only too willing to keep charging her for test after test and different expensive meds that did NOT MUCH.  I cannot stand to see a dog/cat in chronic pain.  I think it is better to let them go if nothing can be done but that is just me...

If I was young and single... I would make sure I was dating a vet if I had pets... lol

My vet bills are never that high for a simple visit. I have no problem saying "no" to tests that I don't feel are necessary and don't feel a bit of guilt.

My vets know that I do my research and we work together on whatever the visit is concerning. I have a herd of cats here and I make it my business to know what they need and what they don't need.

We are very fortunate that our vet is a very good friend of ours. We barter for services all the time. I do clothes mending and pet sitting for her, DH is her "handyman", and she trades us for Heartgard and flea preventative, and reduced rates on vaccines and office visits.

Vet bills are high here, too. Limited competition. I switched to a cat only vet practice with reasonable (to me) prices and very practical attitudes. One thing that surprised me was my cat had to have a couple of followup visits for assorted things stemming from other work (dental surgery, reaction to rabies shot, etc) and they did NOT charge me for those followup office visits. I've gone to vets in the past who did charge for followups to issues, for the dog and the cat.

I've been referring every cat owner in town to them now!

This is a tourist town with a lot of snow birds.  And there are a lot of weathy people living here too with their little princess pooch.  First time I ever saw a diamond dog collar on a dog was here. The vet prices are high all over Naples and Marco Island.  The commercial rents are high here too.  If I had a pet, I would be seeking a vet in the next town over and not here.  The vet tests appear to be their bread and butter and some of them have their own little lab and run the common tests in their own offices.

I am sure I saw a couple of famous basketball players at the market or at the Mercado.  What else could they be wearing expensive clothes/jewelry/shoes and around 7 feet tall with a body guard in tow?   

And you know when a VIP is around cause they block off streets or have 3-4 cops/cars on a main street at every signal.

Once I get my teeth fixed and do a couple other improvements I will be socializing trying to find another place to live.  This room without a kitchen or laundry is not long term but it is all I can do for now.  So when I am ready I will be having coffee or snacks at the Mercado shops.  All the wealthy and celebrities shop here.  Surely I can find an oldie but goodie to pal around with.  LOL  Here are the shops... the hot spot in Naples.

These Mercado food music events are wonderful... $1-$5 bucks per dish... and everyone in the area shows up.  I love to just sit and watch the people.  "International Food Fest - April 19th"

I think the economy of a town dictates the prices charged for services.  Even Costco and Sams raises their prices during the tourist season here.  And this year Walmart prices went up too.  The season is ending here in the next couple of weeks so the good sales should be coming soon.  And hopefully all these wealthy people will empty their closets before they leave...
