Dumb question. I know if I have a bill set up to be paid out of PayPal using my login (NOT the debit card), it will pull from my balance and then pull from my checking, if the payment is more than the available balance in PP.
Does it also work that way on a retailer site when you pick the 'pay with PayPal' option? As in you have to log into your PP account, NOT using the debit card or paying as guest?

When I use Paypal on a retailer website, it pulls from my balance first and then the rest goes on my credit card on file with Paypal. I don't have a Paypal debit card or credit card so don't know how that works. I am pretty sure that I am directed from the retailer website to Paypal and then sign in and go from there. I do it often enough that I should know for sure but didn't know there was going to be a test or I would have taken better notes.

Do you have a checking account on file w/ PP too, kritter?
Any time a monthly bill set for auto pay from PP (where I signed up for payment using the PP login) it takes it from balance, then checking. Which is fine if it will do that on the retailer site.

They have my bank account number but I always change that selection to pay by credit card.
If you don't change the selection to credit card, then it would come from your bank account if you don't have a balance in Paypal. You get the choice when the retailer sends you over to sign in with Paypal to pay.

Yea, I passed the test without good notes.
I was getting nervous and thought maybe I should go buy something just to make sure I remembered correctly.

Val, do you have a PP debit card?
I always use my PP card (processed as a credit card) when shopping online. That way I get my cash back :-)

I do, but there wasn't enough in the PP account to use it, which is why I was wondering how it worked when you paid by signing in to PP. I don't usually pay via direct PP account at retailer sites because so many give you a store merchandise credit if you have to return anything. But I ended paying on the PP debit card after all. While I was trying to figure this out, an item sold and the buyer paid, so I had funds after all.

HAHA! Awesome how that worked out.
If memory serves me correctly, you can use your debit card even if you don't have enough in your PP balance. It will just pull from that account you have linked/authorized.

There's a spot in paypal profiles that lets you set up a cc or bank account to auto draw from if you use your debit card and there isn't enough. If you don't link it there they will not allow the charge (above your balance) to go through even though you have a checking or cc on file for paypal balance overage payments. Their debit overage needs it's own approval.

I just went to pay for something using Paypal and now the default is Paypal Credit where it used to default to my bank account as a payment method. I have never applied or signed up for Paypal Credit so it shouldn't even be an option much less the default. I always use my CC on file for payment so why can't that be the default? Oh wait, because they don't want it to be. ETA Oh look, I have birds instead of peeps.

I think this came up in another thread. The seller had her bank account as a back up. There was no balance in PP so the payment came from the bank account as an E-Check with the usual hold on the payment. The internet seller was unhappy and said he would ship in 2 weeks after the check cleared. The ebay seller knew it would clear in a couple of days but the seller said his policy was a 2 weeks wait on all paypal E-checks.
This was last year. I don't know if there are any changes. I have not received an E-check payment in a while.
If you pay with a debit card as a back up, then it clears like a credit card payment. I prefer to use a debit card and not a bank account just in case I want to make a purchase with no balance in my paypal. I don't want to make an annoying E-check payment and wait for it to clear.
