Yes, I have another sales tax question, lol! I made 2 sales on Etsy this weekend so far, both to NYC, New York. One $35 order shows a sales tax being collected, the other for $70 does not. The one for Brooklyn is exempted or ?? Confused & curious tho it's not my problem I guess. Any ideas about why this would happen? Thanks!

Are the products in the same category? If they're different categories, maybe one is exempt from sales tax. Or, it could be the second buyer has a non-tax certificate on file w/ Etsy and is exempt from sales tax as a reseller. Doesn't mean they bought your item for resale rather than personal use - Etsy won't know that.

Thanks Val- that's possible. I just checked for glitches (none mentioned on the forum) but when I look at my finances the sales taxes DO show as being collected. Just seemed sorta odd because they've been showing consistently on my phone notification AND shop details previously. Just had another sale come in that doesn't show it either. Oh well.

What are the items? clothing is not taxable but some accessories, like jewelry, are.

That's interesting- sold a vintage wool jacket, vintage pillowcases & a set of cookie cutters. All were taxed including the jacket to NYC. Wonder if it being vintage makes a difference?

Vintage won't as it's a tax on the transaction, but if one of the buyers had tax exemption that would explain it.

They should not tax the jacket if it's under $100. That's what's known in tax collection as "a mistake." Pillow case and cookie cutters are taxable.
