Looks like there's a possibility of them charging for the supplies in the future. That would be a fairly big blow to a lot of businesses, I think.

For all of you on social media, please share jes' link and let's get the word out. And more comments posted on the USPS site. Thanks!

So we'd have to BUY THEIR flat rate boxes & bags to save $$ on shipping USPS? Feels like some sort of conflict of interest there but it's still my first cuppa coffee so my brain is too fuzzy to work it out and I can't get into the link without logging in and am not searching for my PW right now.

It would be a switch out - instead of raising rates again, they'd start charging a nominal fee for the boxes/bags. Bet that would cut the abuse right down.

I wouldn't pay for the materials, but I'd be willing to pay for shipping them to me. Wonder if that would be enough of a deterrent to those who misuse the products?

The postmaster general did say that having the shipping supplies was an important differentiator for the USPS. For gawd's sake, why don't they just start pushing to get that stupid prefunding changed? It'll need some work to do and if they're not leaning on that, they need to.

What gets me mad are sellers that sell this stuff on ebay. And some of them are getting really good prices for Priority Mail products. I wonder if their buyers don't realize that they can get it for free at USPS. USPS must be aware that this is going on, maybe it's one of the minor reasons they want to charge for the products.
USPS online has not had that fantastic Priority Mail tape for many years, you can only get it from the Post Office if you ask and they know you are a frequent seller. I'm down to my last 1/2 inch of it on my roll and need a new roll, hope my carrier can get it for me.

I've never understood the desire for the priority tape. Is it just so there's no mistaking it for non-priority? Or that it's free? Or something other than that I'm missing. I more than rarely ship priority, so I've never had a reason to get it.

Jeremy, when I sell big bulky sweaters, I can only fit them in my extra-large poly bags. I purchased a bunch of colored bags years ago and still have them. Since they are not marked Priority Mail anywhere, I will seal across the closing flap with the priority tape and also use a few priority stickers on the package, one usually right above the shipping label and one in the center of the back to bring that to their attention.
If I use a USPS Priority box that is marked, it sometimes pushes the weight into the next category, so I like to use the bags as they are very lightweight. That tape is super strong and stretchy, so much nicer than regular clear tape or even the ebay tape.
At my Post Office if you drop packages off, the Priority Mail makes it on the earlier truck while First Class goes out on the later truck. Since they never scan anything on a regular basis there, it's usually scanned only when it gets to the distribution center, often after midnight. I'm thinking the clerks just sort by eye, throwing the Priority marked packaging on first. This is a small little Post Office, nothing they do makes sense. So I like to make sure those poly bags are marked with Priority stickers and tape.

Makes sense. Thank you for the explanation. Again, I don't ship priority, but when I do it's almost always in a priority box

Desire - you use the priority tape as it was designed to be used, as a priority alert. But way too many people started using it instead of paying a few dollars for their own tape - I recall in the early oughts getting huge amounts of it wrapped all over boxes - I still remember that vanilla smell of tearing it all off. It was incredibly misused and I can see why it was pulled.
ETA: I sell bulky sweaters, too - they don't fit very well in priority boxes, the big poly envelopes work so much better.

Does anyone else remember that a few years ago, they were also then considering charging for the PR supplies?

Some people do create gags from them and it's not right, but it doesn't frost my butt as much as that cutesy crafty pinteresty stuff like the scrap paper storage deal (or the office supplies deal I saw elsewhere) - these people are so clueless.
