I've never done this and have a buyer want to buy a rather expensive dress using layaway. Anyone have experience with this and suggestions to set it up? I looked it up online and Etsy suggests adding "other payment method" to payment options and then billing the buyer directly using Paypal. Not sure if this is pre or post the Etsy payments setup but I don't think that's an option anymore. Help please!! And thanks! :-)

Haven't a clue. But I'll be watching this space to see who does.

OK, I don't do Etsy but if Etsy takes Paypal, can't she use Paypal credit or whatever it is called that comes up an option on the Paypal payment page.
That would be a kind of layaway for her and you would have your money and no hassle keeping track of payments.

After reading the Etsy forums about layaway I may politely refuse; it seems like more work and some risk on my end. I'd have to remember to send her payment invoices directly thru paypal to her after setting up payment options to 'other' so Etsy gets their fees up front, and she could flake out on the sale eventually.

Interesting idea Kritter. Maybe I'll mention it to her.

Being always on the path of least resistance, I wouldn't be jacking with payment invoices over a dress sale. If she wants it bad enough, she can figure out her options to finance her purchase on her own.
Layaway has pretty much gone the way of the "no sales tax on internet purchases" days.

Yeah, I totally agree, Kritter. That and it's always the transactions where ya bend over backwards to be a nice guy only to get bit in the behind.

I've only done layaway on Etsy once, but it was for a $300 item - the seller was very used to it - I made a down-payment of 1/3 and she sent me an invoice every month after that for 1/3 payment, when I was done, she shipped it. Though I think due to the rarity and oddity of the object (18th century watch works) it was pretty obvious that I was a sincere buyer.
