I sold a sweater to a gal in Wa; she paid shipping and sales tax. Buyer didn't like the fit so I'm refunding her actual sales cost of $27.95 less shipping both ways. It looks like her $2.41 sales tax refund is coming from my $$ since it's showing the refund as $30.36. Have I become the tax collector? I thought taxes was IN ADDITION to the sales cost, paid directly to Etsy and so of no concern to me. Is the money flowing thru my account? I looked at my payment account and taxes aren't labeled as such but frankly their accounting has become a murky mess to me. And if I'm collecting the taxes as part of the sale, is Etsy getting a percentage of that in the FVFs?
I'm gonna issue her refund now to get it over with but need to know HTH this whole thing really works.

Well, the next page tries to explain things, sorta. But the buyer was in Washington. Why is the refund in pounds? Here's the breakdown-
How you'll be charged for this refund $0.91 of your payment processing fee will be refunded by Etsy. $2.41 of Sales Tax will be refunded to the buyer by Etsy. $29.45 will be charged to your VISA ending in 3764 to cover the remainder of this refund. What buyer will receive Francie will receive £23.93 (their purchase currency).
But the actual purchase was $27.95. Why am I being charged 29.45 if the sales tax is being refunded by Etsy? Totally confused now... am gonna pour another cup of coffee and walk away from my computer for awhile.

Have you looked at the latest currency conversion charts? They paid in pounds, which Etsy would have converted to dollars to take the money from you. Just like they converted when they gave you the money in the first place.

I've had mine convert to pounds before - not sure why as I haven't listed anything during my stays in England. I hope you're not being charged a bogus currency conversion rate - Etsy's finance reporting has been a real mess lately.

Thanks for the suggestion Val but $27.95 US converts to 21.43 British pound. Geez, I'd completely forgotten about this today... now I"m PO'd again. Last week one of my Etsy stores helped themselves to $9+ from my Paypal account and the next day said "oops our bad". I'm closing 2 more of my stores there... gonna cram all my various inventory into one store. I've completely lost faith in the venue but have too much inventory to just walk away completely. Disgusted am I.
Now on Posh if I sell a $10 item, I get my $8 and that's the end of it (except for my own taxes). They charge the buyer the items cost, their sales tax and shipping. If Etsy is collecting sales tax and lumping that money into my account, are they also taking FVF on that tax? And doesn't that make me pay a bit of THEIR sales taxes on MY income taxes eventually. You'll have to excuse my ignorance- no sales tax here in Oregon and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the bits & bobs.

So if I take the 29.41 figure they're charging me, subtract the 2.41 sales tax and add back the .91 reversed fee I get the 27.95 that the original item price that I refunded. No idea why and it totally makes no sense to me AT ALL. Back in the day I'd just wave my hand and say 'they must be right' but that time's past. I now have AVDD- acute venue distrust disorder and want to numbers to match properly.

When it comes to Etsy I no longer trust their accounting - they keep screwing up since they went to this new system. Since they're apparently making money hand over fist now, I doubt it's to cook the books, just sheer incompetency. I'm actually getting mostly out of the vintage business since it's too high maintenance - it was OK when I was making a lot on Etsy, but $1k a month went to $200 a month in under 6 months, and after struggling to reverse it, I just decided that it was something I didn't want to put anymore time into.
