Immediately after buying eBay shipping supplies yesterday, I contacted the seller to ask about sales tax.
The listing says "Sales tax may apply when shipping to: IA*, MN*, WA*.
* Tax applies to subtotal + S&H for these states only."
I'm in NC and the order was shipped to OH. Since those states were not listed, and it specifically said only IA, MN, and WA, I asked for clarification.
They replied, "In response to your inquiry, we recently started to collect sales tax in all applicable states due to the change in eBay regulations that was imposed by the supreme court. If we have over a certain sales volume in a year we are required by law to charge sales tax on purchases sent to the corresponding states that require it. For this reason we now have to charge sale tax on purchases. We are allowing eBay's system to perform this process for us automatically based on the new rules that were imposed."
I replied to suggest that they edit their listings, since they list only three states for which sales tax will be collected.

Not all states, the ones I just shipped to OR, did not have sales tax charged, which is correct.

Thanks for the correction. In any case, the statement in their listing is inaccurate and should be corrected, but there is no indication that they intend to correct it.

They charged me tax for AZ, AZ does not yet have a Marketplace Facilitator tax and the Economic Nexus tax has been passed but the policy is vague and not active yet.
