Glad I stopped using Facebook early on in the game. I know so many that are addicted to it (my sister and sister-in-law) They are on it constantly, and use the private messages quite a bit too. I know many companies sell your info and follow/track what you do online, but letting companies read private messages sent between two members is a bit much. They say it was to let you use other platforms, but I'm sure a few companies used it to harvest information from those messages to build a specific profile.
Here is the story - it was in the New York Times today too.

I have never posted anything on FB. I check my niece's page and the cat rescue's page a couple of times a month but that is it.
Just never got that interested in it.

Well, the hits just keep on coming, don't they?
When I was selling on FB a lot of the transactional details were done with PMs. Paypal IDs, etc. (so I guess those companies could just deposit money in my account), addresses, etc. Zuck's just another grifter.

A grifter who is now being sued. Expect many more suits to follow.

Yep I have a lot of members send me their paypal addy through PM because they don't want it posted publicly. They think it's more secure that way. Ha guess not. I do a lot of PMing with my family but it's nothing super secret, nothing I'd care if anyone read. I'd never send anything I'd want secured through PM like a credit card # or anything. Mostly it's stupid or funny gifs to annoy each other or keeping each other up to date on Dad's medical problems.

They can't do much with paypal IDs, anyway - except, as I say, send people money! FB can send me money if they want. But there's probably an awful lot of messaging that goes on which can be mined for data. It's the invasiveness of it - Zuck and his minions have far exceeded their remit of a social site by this kind of thing.

My niece and I swap wacko PMs sometimes, just to see what advertising shows up in our feeds the next day.
