I've reluctantly added free shipping to many of my Etsy listings since Josh has gone off his rocker about it. Today I had a buyer chose priority instead of the first class that I expected to use for the tee. Maybe I'm doing something wrong- on eBay the seller sets the free option and all the other options are paid by the buyer. I don't see a way to refine Etsy's shipping for that. Have I missed something? Can a seller specify WHICH service is offered for free? If you can't select what you offer I have to edit all my listings. Gotta go out now- I'll check back for answers (fingers crossed) when I return. Thanks!

I think that has to be set up in calculated shipping - you can offer several options there.
Yeah, they're relegating listings that don't have free shipping or are over the minuscule amount they 'claim' to be 'average' for shipping in a category. Since this has been implemented my shop has taken a real dump because I'm no longer seen save for rotating in every 5-6 days for a few sales. I may bite the bullet and put free shipping/no returns on everything just to clear it out, anyway. What I would do is go through the listings and see if you can set up shipping profiles for them.

I don't know why sites that want to have the appearance that things ship for free don't just allow sellers to enter their item price and shipping price on the back end (like they do now) and then just show the combined amount as the sell price with free shipping:
For example, when a seller creates the listing, they enter the price they want to sell for, $25.00, and then what they are charging for shipping, $5.00, and then when the buyers see it it shows $30.00 with free shipping.
Then there is a record of the shipping costs, even if the buyer doesn't see it.

The problem with that scenario is when a buyer returns something. Item sold for $30 including free shipping means buyer is refunded $30. Item sold for $24+$5 shipping means buyer is only refunded $25. It would be deceptive to the buyer.

Because etsy is hand made and vintage I never minded paying shipping. It's unique items you can't just get on Amazon or wherever. I don't sell much there, but I'm disappointed they are going this way.

Yup, I totally get that, but in today's online marketplace, how often do buyers not get a full refund? They could always allow a restock fee on remorse returns, but again, how often are remorse returns these days? A good portion of returns are SNAD and they get a full refund on that also. But, there could also be a disclaimer on remorse returns stating that there will be a refund minus a reasonable shipping amount or something to that effect. There are always ways to do it, but no site is willing to consider it.

I ended up paying return shipping and neither seller nor eBay refunded me. Most of my return requests from my buyers are for fit, not SNAD.

I added free shipping on almost everything just to get rid of it - TBH, I don't think it's going to do any good. Etsy is going the 'cheap and cheerful' route and many people are reporting rapidly dropping sales as well because of their crap search engine that has Artificial Stupidity and has to learn the search (the search is pretty bad right now, it's supposed to be improving).

I love their commercial and that they are putting the seller’s name on them. I don’t sell there anymore but I see the commercials frequently now and I hope it helps you all. I also am happy to have won a long time debate with someone that insisted it’s pronounced “eat-sy”.

IPO's are the kiss of death. Customers tend to be ignored after a company goes public. IMO.

I'm NOT looking forward to Posh's IPO.
Josh is obviously working for the shareholders rather than the stakeholders (us). Now they're floating an idea for forcing the entire site into free shipping with surveys detailing various different scenarios for doing so (wish I could find the article, I just read it earlier today) - this is different from their free shipping 'test' which runs for about a week. Silverman is so fixated on shipping that he's letting other things slide, like the mass manufactured stuff on the site, the poor search, etc.
He has to do something because the 'Miracle on Wall Street" won't repeat next year as they can't really raise rates again, levy another shipping fee above 5% (which Etsy cheerleaders are delicately calling "a fee on the entire transaction") and PLs aren't working as well as they'd hoped (they have a poor pay per click system and there are far too many reports of bots running through sellers' budgets between midnight and 4:00 pm), and if they plunder seller accounts again and then withhold repayment, they'll probably get sued. The marketplace is still growing organically, unlike eBay which is shrinking, but Silverman is like every other CEO, he wants those double digits.

I always figured it was Et-see, like Et Tu Brutus?

Probably thought "eat-sy" because of "ea-bay"
