He left the cat alone without anyone coming in to care for her? Who does that?

That was my first thought too when I read it on Yahoo.
I guess the cat got in a big dose of payback.

I've left my cats alone for short trips before. Not four days though.
He better check the plumbing. The house should not have flooded just because a faucet was running. He has worse issues than the cat.

One of my cats has recently learned this trick too. The first time i thought it was an accident. When he did it again the next day i figured he knew what he was doing.
I got a paint stirrer stick and a pair of velcro cable ties to hold the stick in front of the lever style taps. Easy to undo when i want to use the sink and seems to have stopped him. He hasn't figured out the other two bathroom sinks work the same way.

He has worse issues than the cat. The cat may have stepped on and closed the drain stopper. One of my bathroom sinks (the one he figured out how to work) doesn't have the overflow hole and I was afraid that would happen until I figured out how to rig it.
