I inherited a cat from a friend that passed away. I'm not cat person but loved her.
She passed away at the vet today. She wasn't acting right yesterday afternoon and this morning she was disorientated and a bit wobbly. An hour later she hid in a closet meowing loudly. I took her to the vet and they did a blood panel and she got intravenous antibiotic.
She was a tiny thing-7.25 lb at her last vet visit on August;down to 6.45 lb today. By the time I got home from the vet she could not walk and slumped on her side. Less than an hour later she was barely breathing. I took her back to the vet and she passed quickly and I hope painlessly.
I'm heartbroken. And I used to complain bc all I did was sneeze around her-she liked to sleep with me when the weather cooled. And I really wish she came with an on/off switch because the non-stop purring kept me up and drove me crazy.

((Sue & Squirrel)). You gave Squirrel a good life and honored the love you had for your friend, and she for her cat. It makes me mad/sad when someone passes and no one "can" take their beloved pet, but they'll fight to the death over the material stuff. I sometimes called Mia Baby Squirrel b/c I don't think she ever weighed over 6#.

I sometimes called Mia Baby Squirrel b/c I don't think she ever weighed over 6#. Sometimes it's not the family's fault. None of the family could take my mom's dog when my mom died. It's not that we didn't want to, we just couldn't. I rent and two pets are the max - I had two cats. My mom's dog didn't like other dogs, so that X'd out the two cousins. They both had dogs. A good friend had cats, my mom's dog didn't get along with cats either. We finally found a home for the dog where she would be the only pet and spoiled rotten.

And that is fine - you still cared enough to find the best situation for the dog and cared that your Mom would care about what happened to her pet. I'm talking about people who just dump off at the closest shelter or put outside. Even a responsible, no kill rescue is fine if nothing else works, but it can be a bit of work to find one who will take on especially an older pet.

Thank you all you crazy cat lovers.
Squirrel belonged to my friend that passed away last October. She was a rescue so no telling how old she was-guessing around 8 or so but not sure. I think she had been having problems since she came to live with my friend and her family but although she was tiny the vet didn't think much was amiss.
I inherited Squirrel because she liked me more than my friend's husband:) During the cold months, she slept with me (on me actually), and I wish she had an on/off switch for her non-stop loud purring.
No more pets for me-my dog will be 11 this month (pretty good for a boxer), and my parrot (age 15) tested positive for a rare disease (avian bona virus). Aside from he cost it's emotionally gutting:(

I hear you on the on/off switch. Generally I like a nice purr but the 18 pounder is an aggressive kneader, sticks his snout in my ear while more or less pinning me down by standing on my hair. And then when I get free of him he takes over both of the pillows. Ok, he's kind of a jerk.

(((((Sue))))) Hootie started sleeping on my pillow by my head about 8 months before he died. I have no idea why he decided to do that, but he had a nice calming purr and it was nice to go to sleep with him purring, or wake up in the middle of the night and know he was up there.

I'm sorry, Sue - that's so sudden but OTOH, it sounds like little Squirrel went peacefully.
We almost lost Cassie, the tuxedo-in-trouble, last winter. She had taken to sitting next to the heating vent under my desk and became very quiet - since she's a non-stop talker this was unusual. I finally took her to the vet and she was hospitalized, but in this case it was something that could be helped and she's back to being a kitten, albeit a 16-year-old one. She was 6.5 lb down from 9 lb and a little thing, too.
It's so hard to see the signs as they cover them so well - Cassie was very sick when we finally realized, and it was just this behavior change - even the DH who is a cat expert couldn't see it until it was pretty advanced.

(((sue))) how lovely of you to take your friend's sweety on for the rest of her life. She might have been pining for her human despite all your care. But they're together now.
