Don't be skeered. Looks like we are in the hands of top talent here: "True to our core as a beacon of opportunity and empowerment, our approach to technology is centered on an open source model. Open source is fueling our transformation, with technologies like Kubernetes, Envoy Proxy, MongoDB and Apache Kafka, propelling eBay to new performance levels for our customers. In a sense, open source gives us control of our destiny, offering greater capabilities to customize for eBay’s needs."

As part of an ambitious three-year effort to replatform and modernize our backend infrastructure, eBay is announcing our own custom-designed servers, built by eBay, for eBay. We plan to make eBay’s servers available to the public via open source in the fourth quarter of this year.
That would be during the busiest selling season on eBay.
I think Chap is right to be skeered.
However, it could be a good thing once it's complete and functioning correctly.

First and probably the best laugh of the day, most likely the week, and definitely the month.

Apache Kafka
"Kafka" is not auspicious - makes me wonder if anyone at Apache there has ever read him or if they just think the name is cool.
It would be great if they could get this up and running - the problem is, it's eBay's tech team.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought open source meant it was open to outsiders, thus (hopefully) allowing better feedback and expertise during the development phase, and possibly more third party apps to help. It would be great it that were the case, we might be able to get true traffic reports like we could back pre-2009.

Definitely open source will help - it depends upon the leadership, though, how much input is coordinated. Also, it depends upon who they contract to build the hardware and firmware. If they try to do this on the cheap, it could be a problem, but who knows!
I read that article - I wonder if eBay wants to bring the revenue from those outside apps in house, given the direction they're going. It would be nice to have any apps actually on the site.

I've only been using open source software for 20+ years and I've never heard of open source servers, nevermind servers that they want to make available to the public via 'open source' (and I'm ASSuming they mean open source software here).
Maybe this is ebay's version of amazon's web services (cloud computing)...?

It could be that the writer was quoting eBay and had no clue themselves what the heck they were writing about

WAYBACKWHEN in the days when they were getting rid of TL1, I tried to get them to go with open source for TL2 so there could be programs for all OSs. They told me I was nuts (basically), that their 'programs' were too 'valuable' to just give away.

These have been warning us for over a year that they are going to be removed. Well, godaddy has warned anyway, don't use the others. Maybe even longer than a year, telling us we will have to create log in credentials for their site directly because we will no longer be able to log in through eBay's portal.

Still not auspicious in this case - if you've ever read The Castle you'd see what I mean. OTOH, being caught in an incoherent nightmare is kind of like eBay sometimes so I guess it's accurate in that aspect.
