It was great to see this on the home page of CNN.
The article says, "In honor of Labor Day, eBay is offering 20% off select $25 purchases from now through September 3. By using promo code "JUSTRELAX" at checkout, shoppers can earn savings in the following categories: Electronics, Sporting Goods, Art & Collectibles, Lifestyle and Fashion."
However, it turned out to be another promotion that applies only to a specific list of sellers.

A site-wide 15% off promotion showed up on my iphone as I was leaving town Tuesday; it seemed to apply to everything but real estate and warranties. Good to see an ad on mainstream website!

However, it turned out to be another promotion that applies only to a specific list of sellers. I can understand why eBay would do that. They need to be sure that the sellers the link goes to are offering what is being advertised. It would be better if eBay would tell sellers when one of these sales are coming up, so we could adjust our listings accordingly, but then that's too logical for eBay management. Or it it would mean they couldn't charge a fee to the select sellers. Or both

I actually think it's better to leave it as a flash sale - no warning. It's not taking money out of our pockets.

I actually think it's better to leave it as a flash sale - no warning. It's not taking money out of our pockets. Maybe not directly, but if there are conditions to sale, it means most sellers can't participate - just those eBay probably notified ahead of time.

I'm thinking the site-wide sales where you can purchase things from almost anyone - those are better off flash sales IMHO.

Yes, I love the site-wide sales and I’ll assume the ones like todays frustrate a lot of buyers. They see the coupon and don’t realize it’s just for select items and abandon their carts at checkout when the code doesn’t work.

Yes - I at least emptied my cart when it happened a time or two ago. That's when someone said there was a list (I had never seen it, despite checking exclusions) but it didn't always appear. I futzed around and finally up it popped. I suspect one of eBay's myriad glitches rather than any desire to hide the list. They've made it more obvious that it's selected merchandise, but not selected sellers.
A big yes on the site-wide sales! On those eBay does a much better job than Etsy, which is making a bodge out of their Labor Day sale (which we actually pay for). They've screwed up the search on the categories, hidden vintage and are dumping the wrong items into the wrong categories on the sale splash page. They've had SEVERAL times to get this right now, and they still screw it up. The first sale I did well on, but Etsy is slowly dying on the vine for a lot of people as competition gets heavier, and the site is increasingly tilted towards cheap replicate items (T-shirts, mugs, stamped jewellery, gag gifts, etc.), pay to play (over and above fees) and a heavy and intrusive push towards free shipping. It's incredible how fast its tilted that site and is turning it into another ebay, save for one who can't figure out sales.
