Was wondering if I could write off the cost of the food I donate to a needy family? I feel like I cant if it is not a 503C but wanted to check. Thanks!

Nope. Maybe next time take it to the foodbank and see if they'll earmark it for the family?

No, we dont have that option. It is a local family at the kids school. I dont much care about the write off but others who may donate might. I may end up looing into a 503C, as long as one of the other ladies I am working with does the paperwork. LOL

Can you donate to the school and have them pass it on, or to a local church? Or a local organization that qualfies…do you know anyone involved with a boy scout or girl scout troup at the school, who could organize a food drive? If you (and other parents) give to the church or organization, you get the deduction, and they can quietly give to the needy family, if privacy is an issue That might be a lot easier than preparing and filing the paperwork to form an approved charity, plus the annual tax return that's due. Just a thought.
