I better get myself to bed, my 14 year old son and I are running a garage sale in the morning.
I have a huge job ahead of me in the morning-- aside from the typical heavy work load that defines a garage sale, I don't have enough tables out right now. The amount of stuff I have to put out is much more than 2 banquet tables and a card table can bear. I am going to try and pull out the saw horses and some plywood and make another table. Gotta get this stuff up and visible and sold!
Please send me some hungry buyer vibes!

Can't wait to hear about it!
When I've run out of tables, I thrown an old sheet or blanket on the ground and put stuff on there. Not as good as tables as some people aren't going to want or be able to squat down to look, but IMO it beats having stuff in boxes.
Good luck and I hope you clear out and make lots of $$$.

Good luck! Garage sales are such hard work, but I love the feeling of seeing stuff GO. I also love having my house cleared out at the end of the day. I make major deals at closing time to get rid of anything left.

I had one last fall and it was a dud as far as attendance. Still not quite sure why as I promoted it the same as other successful sales I've had.
Anyway, we had a lot of stuff left over at the end. I kept a few things aside to sell on craigslist, but planned to pack the rest into my car and take it over to Savers. Decided WTH and wrote EVERYTHING FREE over what had been written on the signs I'd put out that morning. Within a couple of hours, everything was taken except for stuff that filled one box. I wasn't going to get much on the tax deduction anyway and it saved me from boxing everything up and hauling it over there. It was so much fun to see people's incredulous faces when I was encouraging them to just take stuff.
One woman took a Peavey (they make guitar amps) neon clock. She said she was pretty sure her husband and teenage son would love it. I'd been trying to sell if for $25, but had only paid $10 for it at a yard sale 10 years earlier, so I was fine giving it away. Anyway, an hour or so later, she came back to my house and knocked on the garage door. She said she just had to come back and tell me how absolutely thrilled her husband and son were with the clock. She told me they'd had an angry sort of day earlier and when she left the house that morning, everyone was mad at each other. When she came home with the clock they couldn't believe how cool it was and that on top of that she'd gotten it for free and she felt that my generosity had healed the bad feelings and she just wanted to tell me how much it meant to her.

Aww Terri, that is such a sweet story. That free clock did some good!
My sale was SUPER SLOW. It is overcast and drizzly today, so I don't think people were in the mood to shop. It was seriously dead. I usually get swarms of people, and it can be overwhelming, and that didn't happen a single time today. Another reason why it was slow, I probably missed the early morning rush, as I got a very late start (8:30). My daughter woke up in the middle of the night crying with an ear infection, so I didn't hear my alarm this morning. My son helped me set everything up, and we turned over large cardboard boxes, and set stuff up on those, due to the lack of tables. I made $85, so I can't complain.
I still have stuff left over, but I also have several bags going to GW. I am going to try again at the end of May when my weekends are freed up from baseball.

Mind if I ask why you had the sale on a Friday? Is that common where you live? Nearly all the garage/estate sales around here are Saturday, sometimes there's a 2-day sale (Sat/Sun) with everything 1/2 off the second day.

Most sales here happen on a Fri, Sat or Sun, but are most common on Saturday. Saturday was my original plan, but we have a 100% chance of rain tomorrow. I have had other sales on Fridays with great success, just not today. Friday might even be more popular that Sunday for a sale, since so many people go to church.

The yard/garage sales around here generally run from Thursday or Friday thru Saturday. I rarely see any on Sundays.
Hope your sale went well.

I didn't read this thread until today and was wondering if you had gotten rained out.
It has been raining/drizzling all day here today. Definitely not a good day for a yard sale.
Glad you made HEB salsa money at least.

Glad you made HEB salsa money at least. It is really coming down now. I just got back from HEB, and I was expecting a madhouse, but I was in and out in 10 minutes. Just had to get some stuff for dinner tonight. When I got home, my dh was polishing off the rest of my fresh salsa.

How did you do with your GS? It was slow, but I made $85. My garage looks emptier-- so that is good! I have two trash bags in the back of the van to go to GW tomorrow, and the rest is boxed up for a sale closer to summer. I really do think the threat of rain kept people home. One of the women who did shop told me that I was the only sale they had seen.

Sorry to hear you didn't get many customers. Its OK-- I plan on doing it again at the end of May when the regular baseball season is over. I was telling my son that I didn't feel as worn out after the sale as I usually do. Part of it was his phenomenal help, but the other part (I believe) was that it wasn't blisteringly hot outside. Summer sales are so draining here. So even though I didn't have loads of people, I still made good money, and didn't swelter and feel junky afterwards.

An extra $85 in your pocket sounds good to me! Congrats!
