And in other news: eBay CEO Devin Wenig answered shareholder questions after he gave a presentation following this morning’s annual meeting. eBay webcast the event, but the audio went dead for the last minutes of the broadcast during the entire Q&A portion.
::wheeze:: Guess they didn't like the questions.

I personally don't care for it. But I see why they would test a market for it.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
There are other places besides Amazon that have annual dues. Bed Bath and Beyond just started a program like this recently which is actually a pretty good deal.
As a buyer, it's not something that I would pay for. It's not an incentive since the sellers are already offering free shipping. I wish I could read everything because I do not see what the benefit is as a buyer. *I know, I could look it up but I don't even have a full coffee in me yet and I'm running out the door soon.

Seems like these pay-to-play things are popping up all over. Even our local (regional) grocery stores have a program where you can pay an annual fee, place your order online and they'll bring it out to your car. I do that for free at Walmart, and I want to pick out my own perishables.

They are going to end up forcing uniform policies across the board and sellers will end up having to comply or bail out. I surely wouldn’t pay for 2 prime like subscriptions. I all but abandoned eBay buying unless I am replacing something.

I usually don't read the crazy comments on Ina's articles because the posters all say the same thing over and over. But this sentence by poster Ric hit me - it's from one of his comments that he posted under this ebay prime article:
"Based on this, it would appear that eBay has realized that they have bled their sellers dry so now they are turning their sights on monetizing buyers by offering nothing for something."
What exactly is ebay going to offer for this 49.00 fee? Amazon offers over 20 extra features if you pay for Prime. Most buyers won't jump if all ebay offers is just free shipping and free returns with this membership. They've pushed sellers to offer free shipping so heavily that many sellers are already offering free shipping/free returns. Why would an ebay buyer pay a fee to get free shipping? The buyers may as well look at all listed items, free shipping or not, and just pay the sellers shipping cost instead of buying into this. On clothing at an average of 5.00 shipping per item, they can buy 10 items before they even hit 50.00. This might not work out as well as ebay thinks it will.

@misspettigrew
Is there a market for this in Australia? I don't get it.
One thing Ebay is not and that's innovative.

I don't shop on Amazon, so I'm not a Prime member. However, I've considered getting a membership so I can watch the Amazon TV shows and movies. A membership on eBay that only gets me free shipping wouldn't be worth it.

I know other place offer this, but as far as I know, other places also fulfill their own orders and a membership can be balanced against their acquisition/shipping costs. eBay doesn't sell anything, so they're basically paying people to shop there.

Not unless we're dimwits. People who already shop on ebay already know to look for free shipping, if that's what they're into.
It might be worth it if you're a flybuys member* AND you consistently shop at the big dept stores and "known" stores. If you join this thing you get double flybuys points (flybuys is a customer rewards program). But, I imagine, only on "eligible" items. Which would be electronics, fancy clothes and...I dunno, the stuff I don't buy.
Amazon started an AU site in December, which everyone said sucked. Now the AU govt wants international retailers to collect GST from AU shoppers. Amazon refuses, so they're going to block AU shoppers from the US site from July 1. Force us to use the AU site.
This might be the ebay twist: ebay and alibaba have said they'll collect the GST. No worries, we'll just change our collection systems, they say. (Cos we all know how good they are at programming.)
Here's where I got the news. You have to scroll down for the ebay part.

I see this going badly for me and my fellow Australians. We pay no customs on goods under $1000 but now we'll be paying 10%. *** The global shipping companies will be in seventh heaven. People will buy things from, say, Macy's, that they once would have bought from Amazon. The mail forwarding companies will be happy, too, because their customers will pay them $10 or more to buy from US sites that block them. But does Amazon really mean "block" as in, not let me even browse? How will I find out about ingenious products and read reviews? Plus it will be like the old days and AU retailers will be able to charge elebenty thousand dollars for a piece of crap that only comes in two colours. We have nothing here, nothing. No shoes, or underpants, or anything. <sobbing>
***10% is okay, it used to be heaps more. I remember having to pay, like, $80 on a $200 blouse.

www.businessinsider.com/ebays-growth-slowing-2018-7 Moving forward, eBay could consider expanding its subscription service, which has proven successful in select overseas markets, to boost its overall performance. When asked about how international markets beyond the US were performing, eBay's chief financial officer Schott Schenkel identified Australia, the UK, and modest growth in Germany as the current most promising prospects.
Interestingly, Australia and Germany are the only two countries where eBay Plus, the company's subscription service that offers free shipping and returns, double loyalty points, and exclusive offers, is available. That eBay is enjoying more success in the markets where it offers this program means that the e-tailer should consider expanding it to other markets internationally, or perhaps in the US, to fuel customer acquisition and boost sales.Seriously? The author must not be aware of Amazon's Prime membership and what eBay would have to offer in the U.S. to compete with Prime. Wall Street analysts can be really dumb.
