I don't understand this statement:
"Brands are coming to EBay because the retail landscape is changing," Wenig said. "We don’t compete with our sellers. That’s very rare and very unique."
I know they want to get brands, but aren't some of them leaving Ebay?

Those conference calls with analysts are all smoke and mirrors.
Its all about trying to convince Wall Street that there is a plan in place to right the sinking ship.

I don't think that the heads at Ebay realize they don't have much to offer big brands. Now maybe small start ups, yes.

Small start-up brands - there's a GREAT idea for eBay! Amazon is such a gigantic kludge, it's easy to get lost there. I've dealt with a couple of small start-up brands on Amazon (purchasing, then chatting with the owners) and they almost despair at the sheer size of the site and its impersonal nature. eBay is big and cranky, but it's easier to sort.

Well you've been saying that, Chap.

Not about small brands, though - what's not a great fit for Amazon could be a great fit for eBay. Again, it's the differences between the two sites, playing to the strengths of each. It's tough enough to get new brands off the ground, but one of the problems going with Amazon is Amazon's own competition with brands, i.e., Amazon Basics (their generics), etc. And in general it's just really crowded. As long as eBay is doing the small business thing, they could provide a platform for emerging brands.

Bezos knows what he's doing. As a customer - I absolutely love Amazon. Their prime is worth it. The shipping, the entertainment... what's not to like.
As soon as we move in our house I'm dumping direct tv and hooking up prime along with Netflix and Hulu to our TV . Well, DH is doing that. I don't know how. I use my iPad. And local stations - it's enough. And I can't wait to cancel direct tv.

Getting rid of DirecTV was awesome! It felt great to dump them. We do have XFinity cable (just because it's bundled and it was only $10/mo with internet).
I could (well, we did) live without cable or dish for awhile and did just fine. We have a Roku in our bedroom and one on the main TV. LOVE it. We have Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, CBS on demand (they have shows there that aren't on TV!) and Showtime. All through the Roku. I buy my Hulu on a 12month membership card from eBay. Well worth it. I'm sure you could do the same with Netflix.

If you like streaming, Prime definitely is a good option with that bundled in. I don't stream anything but a few sports events (bike racing and boxing coverage) so that's lost on me, but I've used Amazon's used book small seller program since about 1998, and purchased books from them from the beginning - that's where Amazon's real value has come in for me - it has made finding books so much easier, though I'm now a confirmed Kindle addict lol. I purchase oddball things from them in bulk - insoles, dry cleaning bags, etc.
ETA: One of my neighbours apparently gets everything in his entire life from Amazon and then passes along all the overpacking they still do - knock-on benefit! I can really use it. He brings it over by the bag load.

I just dumped DISH and went with the streaming DirecTV Now using Amazon Fire.
Three different plans. I have the $35 one that includes my favorite channels plus the locals.
I don't have Prime but can always find enough to order to get Amazon's free shipping.

I try to collect up enough to get the free shipping, then order it all at once. I probably buy more laundry and packing supplies than anything else. Big tubs of Restoration, 300 dry cleaning bags, barbs for tagging guns, etc. Any kind of oddball cleaning item/stain remover I haven't found locally and just MUST have, especially stuff for antique linens, due to running my vintage shop.

We use an antenna for local channels and have Amazon Prime, Netflix and DirectTV Now for other channels that don't come through the antenna. I hardly ever watch Netflix or Amazon Prime but watch DirectTV Now daily. I like it because it is month to month and they gave us the cut rate of $10 a month for 3 months when they ran a special. Downside is sometimes the buffering interferes with watching.

Prime just went up by $20.00, by the way. Annual is now $119.

I read that!
I'll pay it. I still think it's a good deal.

Still, it's only $10/mo and it seems that they've added things to it.
I do have an Amazon program but it's Amazon Unlimited for my Kindle - kind of like an on-line library where I check books out, read them, then return them for other titles. It's pretty cool. The DH gave me a 6 month subscription along with a Kindle Paperwhite for my birthday last year and I liked it so much that I've continued the sub - I think it's $5-10/mo. I read about 8-10 books a month so it's really worth it because I can check things out for free. I was spending ridiculous amounts to feed my habit before, and there are SO many trashy paperbacks around the house lol! I manage to sell a pile every once in a while but most of them just pile up - I take them sometimes to people's Little Libraries and get rid of them that way.

I read an article recently from Wenig that was talking about how they want Brands but not retailers. But then they talked about Brands like retailers. And of course how small sellers are the backbone of the company. Honestly, I left the article thinking, what a smoke and mirror job.

It's pretty easy to see the continued lack of focus- Wenig sounds like he's floundering.

Ouch.
Revenue growth in the quarter was 7%, which is on trend with revenue growth rate over the past several quarters. But that growth is being driven by pricing increases, not higher usage on the platform.
Active buyer growth dropped to 4%, versus 5% over the past several quarters. Meanwhile, sold-items growth was just 1%, and that continues a multi-quarter slowdown in sold-items growth. Over the past several quarters, that growth rate has fallen from 4% to 3% to 2% to 1%.
One caveat - wooing the 'youth market' is in a lot of ways a chimera - that youth market eventually grows up and priorities change and a new youth market takes place. Disposible income changes as priorities change. It's not worthwhile to chase a bunch of changeable kids, it IS worthwhile to advertise in such a way as to stay relevant to a constantly replenishing more mature market. This article seems to consider both markets to be static (kids not interested, older market tapped out) - the point for eBay is to figure out how to tap into that in between space.
