Unsure what category to put this in, so feel free to move it Val val2525 . I got a cross stitch kit that I thought was unopened, but I realize it has been & the instructions are missing. Everything else including the cover picture, seems to be there. Is this worth selling? Can a kit be done without the instructions? Can the average crafty person do that or is that ability pretty rare? TIA>

I don’t do cross stitch, but at my previous job I had a few customers that had me make their photos into gridded patterns to use as reference. I’d say if they are experienced they don’t need instructions, especially with a printed canvas and the thread colors already included. I used to love selling those kits, but the thrifts here caught on and they charge about $10 now and I haven’t found any worth over $10 in a long time. They are so easy to list and a great profit it you find them cheap enough.

They are ez to list, but they are hardly worth it anymore, except for a few. Thanks Kat, that's kind of what I figured. I'll wait for a few more to chime in just to be sure.

It probably depends on how experienced the stitcher is and how complicated the printed canvas is. I sold a lot of nice hand painted needlepoint or cross stitch canvases and none had instructions or thread. If it's a kit worth listing if it was complete, I'd list it AS IS and make it clear the instructions are gone. Can't hurt :-)

I would list it too. It isn't hard, usually, to figure them out.

As long as it's a printed canvas, instructions shouldn't be necessary.

As long as it's a printed canvas, instructions shouldn't be necessary. Oh. It's not a printed canvas. Oh well, thank you. I'll just list it, maybe at auction cheap, as I can't return it & see what happens. I'm in it for under $2, so I'll still likely make $$. Thank you everyone, somehow I missed the word "printed" in the replies, until now.

@newenglandnew knows a lot about this. You rang? LOL. Yes, cross stitch is essentially just a lot of Xs. XXXXXXXXXXX. Like that. Anyone can do it and if you have the printed pattern plus a colored picture, they can easily do it by looking at the picture to figure out what color thread to use.

Hi Newengland, thanks for chiming in. This kit has the front color picture, but no printed pattern. Everything else is there (thread, needle, etc), is it worth selling w/o instrucs or a printed pattern?

Some one might want it for the thread and canvas.

Hi Newengland, thanks for chiming in. This kit has the front color picture, but no printed pattern. Everything else is there (thread, needle, etc), is it worth selling w/o instrucs or a printed pattern? Oh, no pattern at all. If you just have threads, the general picture of what it would look like, and a blank cloth, then probably not worth it. But if that cloth or canvas had the pattern printed on it, yes. If there is no pattern anywhere for the person to go by, then it would probably only be worth listing if it were something rare. I had some sort of colonial reproduction sampler one time, cross stitch, that went for big money. It happened to be from some special rare edition. Sometimes if it's Dimensions Gold brand it could sell too. But without any pattern, you'd just be selling threads and maybe a piece of cloth. It might sell but for a very low price--to somebody who does embroidery and just wants to stock up. I'd market it as supplies, not as an embroidery kit.

Google the kit to see if someone has posted the instructions online. I just did a generic search and some came up.
If so, you can print them out and include in the kit or reference it in the listing.

If one wanted a rainy-day project it could be mapped on the cloth by uploading a good photo of the design, calculating proportions with a little math then mapping it on a grid - it would provide basic instructions at any rate.

Thanks @newenglandnew & 57roses , it's not rare & it's not Dimensions gold. I'll try looking for the instructions online though, as I have nothing to do with it otherwise. It only sells for aound $12-13, but since they're such an ez list, I'll often list them. I'll see if I can easily find the instructions online, thanks everyone so much! p.s. I'm about to post, but I just had a Dimensions Gold, with 15 watcher, that sold for a whole $15.95

I used to do Counted Cross stitch until I discovered I really hated it. Sometimes you need the instructions/chart because the colors are so subtly different.

I used to do Bargello (40 years ago), and still have a pillow to finish but ran out of yarn...to match a couch that I no longer have. But it is so pretty and intricate with numerous stitching designs. I still have 2 completed pillows that match nothing, but can't bear to toss them.
Holy carp! I just googled them and they are selling for $135 ish!

Well that should make them easier to get rid of Denise! denise15601 They are a bit worn by now-I used corduroy on the back and it faded out. Not ambitious enough to remake them. I should look into finishing the one that I ran out of yarn on, though. Just the front part, not going to finish the back and piping.
