Never heard of either company, TBH.

I've used Polyvore quite a bit for researching items. They also had a sales platform.

I could never figure out how to buy something from there. It just sent me to a broken link or to the vendor where it’s sold out from.

I used it for research, but found it less useful in recent years as sites like Lyst (and retailers themselves) improved their websites. Putting sets together was fun but it wasn't something I wanted to invest a lot of time doing.
Polyvore did have a very loyal following (known as the "Polyfam", which makes me think of a very different fashion community -- but I digress). Check out some of the comments on that article:
"I've never felt more betrayed by a website. i made ART on that site and now its GONE. It feels like they deleted part of my soul."
"Thirding this. I just logged on and i'm in shock. I feel like crying. I was on there for 4 years, I had huge collections and countless works in progress on there. It was such an invaluable resource for me as an artist, and the fact that they didn't even give us any warning about this devastates me. I don't know what I'm going to do."
"Hours upon hours of time spent creating my sets and it is all gone! I feel like they have just voided part of my life. Polyvore was a site that I really enjoyed spending time on and they have taken that away from me"
"I have been on Polyvore for 8 years now and it was my "go to"place to create sets and unwind after a stressful day."

OMG - some people need a REAL life! Maybe they should go over to Pintrest and play over there.

I found the angst in the comments a little much, but there should have been some warning so that participants could rescue their collections and the like. It would be the kind of thing I'd use to drive more customers to my shops and stores and not just for the joy of it, but even for people for whom it was a pleasurable hobby they must feel like all of their effort was just thrown into a dumpster.

OMG - some people need a REAL life! Maybe they should go over to Pintrest and play over there. My pinterest was wiped out - all of my categories, everything - I'm particularly sore about my category showing various 'ethnic' and traditional embroidery techniques of the world, featuring my own collections and items I had in stock. They did some overhauling and oh my GAWD all I see now are adverts - hair restoration, what not to eat on a Paleo Diet (clue: everything), clothes from "Banggood", really gaudy, blaring discount ads. I just use Twitter now because at least it's quick and I sort of understand it, unlike the new Pinterest. If I forget something or didn't pick it up, I can just use Liz's videos.

My pinterest was wiped out
Now I know what happened to my Bruchetta board. It disappeared into thin air.

Yes, the ads on Pinterest are awful now. And the results of using image searches on Google are mostly Pinterest-based so you get stuck using Pinterest one way or the other when doing research. Polyvore never was useful for me but they should have given their users some kind of warning.

All of this FREE FREE FREE on the internet means that the users, i.e., members, are disposable as well. No one likes to think of that, but I guess it's a risk.

Chap - did you have a business or personal account on Pinterest? I went to check mine after you said yours was wiped out as I haven't checked there in months, maybe 4-5 months ago. Everything on my personal account is still the same. I used it heavily when it first started way way back and was able to get over 18,000 followers which are still there. But it's sort of useless as a selling tool to me.
I also can't stand the way the pages load as I scroll down my cover faceboard - they load and appear, popping up as you are scrolling down - that drives me crazy on any site I look at.

I just had a personal account which I had had for some time. I had a lot of international followers which was cool, but not the legions you had. I wonder if it had to do with activity level? I had been using mine a lot less recently.

And yes, it seems REALLY clunky now.
