I've been following this, but the below I think is the best summary. www.sistrix.com/blog/google-is-rolling-out-a-big-core-algorithm-updateMy Etsy shop depends a lot on google hits, sometimes 1/4 of my traffic, which is why I optimise for google (Etsy is finally moving that way, too). I've noticed sagging sales and visits but still haven't been able to pinpoint of that's one reason, but I think it may be. I still think Etsy is moving shops in and out of a rotation schedule because my stats are so regularly 2 days on, 4 days off. This doesn't affect Google shopping, but rather search.

They own you-tube and that had the biggest jump in this change - figures.
Google is too big - controlling a lot of merchandising that goes on.

Why did Etsy take a hit? And Spotify? They mentioned content-heavy sites... Wikipedia makes sense cause they're all content. But I don't consider Etsy to be especially wordy. Oh well, I wasn't getting much traffic from Google anyway. Just have to sit back and let the "giants" bicker again.

Not sure why, but Google says it's nothing that can be fixed. One suspicion is their 'market pages', which when you find a photo of an item on Etsy in google's photo search and try to get to the item, it brings you to an Etsy page showing similar items instead of that item. I don't know if that's because the item is sold or not available or it's just Etsy's manipulation, but it could be a factor.
Google talks about "content rich video" but frankly a lot of people don't want video and they're including at different browsing habits by entirely different markets. And yeah, they own You-Tube.
I'm in a stats and SEO group who is keeping an eye on it for impacts on sellers/buyers.

My devious mind suspects the lack of adsense $$ being applied on Etsy, Wikipedia and some of the other sites....like they're penalizing people/companies that don't "pay to play". But that's probably just me being paranoid again. I'll be curious what your group discovers Chap; could you keep us informed if you all figure it out? To me what really sucks is how damn secretive Google is about anything. They want everyone else to be beyond transparent but never share whats, whys or hows with their users.

The EU is demanding disclosure from Google.

You know, I've been following Google and their search changes for about 3 years now, ever since they began to move to a more 'organic' search (a lot of this is tied in with voice searches), and whereas they're clear about the mechanics of search (which are pretty basic) they're very unclear about how exactly HOW they actually rank sites. It doesn't surprise me that YouTube comes in first in this latest iteration.

More on the algorithm update - blog.searchmetrics.com/us/2018/03/19/google-core-algorithm-update/No mention of Etsy but there's no reason why there would be as this is an overview. The graphs have unfortunate light gray lettering (who designs these things?) so it's hard to read, but the dates match up to being found more or found less on SERPs (search engine results pages) with the start of the newest roll out. I do know that I depend a lot on Google traffic and my Etsy shop, which until then had been perking right along, stalled and then basically has shut down. I can't do much because it's Etsy that's affected. Basically, it's not that so-called weaker content is penalized, but that richer content is being rewarded. That sounds like cold coffee to me. This is basically what I know now. Etsy is having a site-wise voluntary participation sale starting on 3/22 through 3/29 which the site will promote. I'm getting ready for that one and hope it works as well as the Labor Day and Christmas sale did.

Thanks for the update Chap! Hope your sales pick up again soon. I don't get much traffic from Google there; most views are from internal searches. So the sale starts the 22nd? I actually set it up awhile ago and forgot. Sales are slow but steady there; when I list more I sell more. Sound familiar?! Lordy lord...t I just opened my 4th store there, specializing in vintage kids stuff and handmade dolls (when I get the dolls perfected).
I closed my eBay store; it's still showing as open thru the end of March but there's hardly anything in it. It was definitely time for a break from all the nonsense I have no control over.

I have 280 items in my Etsy shop (I sell everything in one shop) - twice as many as last year. I'm not sure what to do - I list and list but unless they turn the lights on, all the listing, advertising, etc., I do doesn't do much. I get probably 30% of my traffic from Google. I usually have about 25 sales a month, that's sinking fast.

My sales have all but disappeared now. Two a week and that was on the site wide sale where before I was flooded with sales, even for Xmas which isn't normally a big vintage occasion. Generally I have about 7 or more sales per week (higher PPI than eBay).
I'm on funky mobile now and awkward to check in on the stats update (If any more info) but I've discontinued Etsy promotional and started purchasing ads on Google again.
