So I am trying again to figure out my Mom's jewelry.
She spared no expense when shopping on QVC, but how do I know that the gems on her rings are real? They are all 10K-18K gold with different colored gems.
I can take them to Treasure Hunt, but worried that they won't tell me the truth.
All of the pieces were purchased in 2001 or before.

Try to find them on eBay under QVC and see what others call them. A semi-precious stone is a gemstone and they probably have semi-precious stones if they are marked as gold metal. So a citrine, topaz, peridot are all gemstones as are rubies, emeralds, sapphires etc. In the end, if you don't know what the stone is you can call it a pink gemstone or a blue gemstone. The police will not pursue you.

Thanks Frakin!
I have spent all afternoon looking for most of these items. I don't know the real value of these gemstones, and afraid to underprice them.
Will keep researching.

Start at the high end of any comprables. You can always step back.

Price high with best offer. Or auction at your happy price.

In general QVC gem quality is not going to be worth a lot. My mom has hundreds :-(. In general they would be promotional quality gemstones. Think about it, they made literally hundreds of thousands, probably millions of each piece of jewelry, to sell. You can't do that & use high quality gems. There are some exceptions as a few gems have become more difficult to get over the years, but 99% of it, I plan to sell to the gold dealer, as the $$ is more in the gold, than the gems.

I took some jewelry to Treasure Hunt and they were only interested in the metal -- the gems held no value for them. They're mostly interested in meltdown value, if that helps.

Remember though that when you're selling to the end user, the style is important. They aren't looking for a diamond that is flawless for an engagement ring. Just like with costume jewelry, what you can get is not directly related to the worth of the raw goods.

Oh thanks-that helps a lot! I have the sales slips for a couple of her rings and she paid $120 for some of them! Ergo my confusion. I guess I should weigh the gold ones to see the value.

I think some of their gems may be simulated, but wouldn't know enough to tell the difference.

I used to buy a lot of the QVC jewelry back in the day and ended up selling it to the gold dealer. Got nothing for the stones in the rings because he said they had very little value.
Totally overpriced jewelry just like everything they hype on those shows.

If you can quote in the listing what the retail price was, that would be very helpful. There are a lot of QVC fans, go for it.

If any of them look like beautiful diamonds, I would be very wary. There are most likely something that looks like a diamond, unless you can tell that they're lower quality diamonds. The colored stones might be "lab created," which are worth considerably less than natural stones.

Treasure Hunt had an electronic diamond tester (I assume all the places that buy gold have them). It might be worth your time to take the things there just to get them tested and weighed. There's no obligation to sell your stuff right then and there.

That will help a lot. Last year when I googled, I could find retired QVC items. But now, all I see are items from sellers. Hers aren't really vintage since she bought most of them in 2001 and 2002.
