Fox cleaned them out at dawn. We put an automatic pop door on the coop that opens at dawn. Fox was likely lying in wait for it to open. It killed all 6 of them, took 1 to eat and left the other 5 laying around the yard. Luckily, I was the one who found them, not the kids.
Luckily it is chick days right now, so the kids were soothed by babies. I am going to miss those girls though.

Aww, so sorry Mup.
I can identify as we used to have chickens back when our kids were small and one day I heard all kinds of squawking going on. When I looked out the window to check on them , there was a pack of dogs (at least 6) having a field day killing them. I did get DH's 22 out and shot over them to scare them off. I was furious to discover that they had killed 7 of the 12. And they were just about old enough to start laying regularly too.
Oh, and our chickens did not roam free, but the dogs and dug under the fence enclosure.

I sympathize. Our son's family lives a few miles from us. We're in a very rural area. We see and/or hear foxes, coyotes, bobcats, hawks, raccoons, feral cats and dogs. They have trouble with hawks getting their chickens and sometimes dogs. Several months ago a bobcat got their peacock. That was quite upsetting.

Oh Mup, so sad and horrible. I still remember the screams when a fox got our hens. It was like no sound they'd ever made before. I'm glad you and the kids didn't hear it. I know how your heart thudded when you saw them. (((Mup)))
How lucky that you have little fluffies to distract the kids.

Thanks all. Like loosing any pet, I have a hole in my heart. But I know this is the circle of life and that fox was trying to feed her babies.
