If you are getting that many, I'd suggest downloading Malwarebytes and running a scan. Chances are you've picked up malware/adware. Also, not sure what browser you are using, but does it happen when you change browsers? If you use Chrome or Firefox, download an ad blocker. I see ads on this site because I allow them thru (per val's suggestion), but I don't see them anywhere else.
If you use IE or Edge, then you probably should investigate using chrome or firefox.

It depends on your browser, each one has it's own extensions & options for ads/popups, etc.
From your description, it's hard to tell if it's normal ads or some sort of virus, though it sounds like normal ads as near as I can tell. It is quite common for those to launch vids now, cover up what you're reading, be full page size, etc. Many are hiding the X these days too. Some you have to hover over a corner & then the X appears. If it's for typical products/services, they are probably normal ads & you can just check into add ons for whatever browser you use.
If they are really shady seeming or just are 'click here' types, without referencing a product or website, then may be a virus.
Malwarebytes is a great idea either way.

I have malwarebytes on this laptop, I'll run a scan. But they are just normal ads that I can't X out of, that's what bothers me. I've had to go out of the website I'm on and then back to get rid of some of them. It mostly happens when using Chrome. I use Chrome and IE, don't have Firefox on my computer.
I usually get to a website by googling what I am looking for. I've been reading a lot of newspapers and political articles lately. I wonder if google is causing this. I'll look for an ad blocker to download. Can't figure out why I don't get this on my old laptop - I must have put something on there at one time or another to keep them at bay.
Thanks!

Are you talking about the ads on sites where you're reading an article, scrolling down, and then suddenly a stupid ad starts floating across your screen, blocking what you were reading? I hate those stupid ads.

Yes, Val. I'll be reading a website, mostly happens on online newspapers or news-sites and the big blocks of ads pop up and it blocks my reading. A lot are videos. I would not mind if I could X them out but they don't have an X in the corner for some reason. I leave my sound off all the time now because some of the ads start screaming as soon as they pop up. Don't understand why they are not on my old laptop. Apparently I put some kind of block on that laptop, but I can't find what it is when looking at my programs to try to duplicate it. Looking for a good blocker now.
