"eBay struck a 5-year operating agreement with PayPal when the board broke up the companies in 2015, but a provision in the contract allows eBay more leeway beginning next year"
"Schenkel said eBay was considering its options. It would mean more revenue for eBay, but it would also entail more costs - and eBay would take on risk. And, he said, "We would have to do trust, we would have to have some degree of additional customer service, all of which PayPal does for us today.""
"And you know, again, the lens we're going to take is, do sellers want alternatives? Do buyers want alternatives? Can we make it more frictionless? Can we make it a better user experience? And along the way who's the best payment provider partner? Today it's been PayPal and we certainly can and will open it up to others."
Sounds like it's a very remote possibility to me. It's considering options because an agreement is coming to an end - so they have to come up with something. This article (and most of the stuff on this site) seems to be anti-eBay scare pieces to get sellers that already hate eBay all wound up.

I read Ina's blog regularly and that's almost the only place to get news without the marketing spin. She's not responsible for that load of sad sacks who constantly yabber in the comments section (and they ARE tiresome!), and if she criticizes eBay, well, generally they ask for it. We have to make up our own mind so that's one of a number of sources, at any rate.
I wonder why those dolts yak on and on when most aren't even on ebay anymore? I think they're obsessed lol.
This is actually a pretty big deal, the payment processing and trust is a big issue on eBay - they are riddled with glitches, sometimes not even able to keep fees straight, and if they do take on payment processing, it'll mean setting up (or buying) a processing system.
I'm not sure how remote that is - Etsy just did the same thing by shifting everyone to Etsy Payments, and it caused a big furor because many shops only wanted to take paypal rather than have Etsy handle the money. I was signed up for Etsy payments from the beginning so it made no difference to me.
eBay may go this route, but it will be interesting to see what they do.

I don't generally read the comments on Ina's site...just too negative without and constructive criticism. I'm signed up for Etsy payments and I generally only have to wait a day or two, but I don't sell much there. You can schedule a money transfer sooner if you don't want to wait on their time fame.

Yes - I've quit reading them, too unless Marie posts - she always has something knowledgeable and constructive to say. She doesn't always agree with Ina (neither do I) but she always has something worthwhile to add. She hasn't been posting lately, so the comments section is pretty much just a pile o' derp now. I've found Etsy Payments to work well, and find the once a week deposits to be easier to track (though I've scheduled them earlier from time to time). Yeah, sure Etsy is probably diddling with the money, OTOH, they need to get something for their money handling, this stuff doesn't work for free. I was a little bemused by the huge uproar on the forums over there about the Etsy Payments. Never did figure out the problem, even after reading the discussions - you can still take paypal lol. But it's moved on to an uproar about Josh Silverman now.

I will say that I REALLY REALLY hope they sign another contract with PayPal. That would be my wish.

Mine, too - it would be the simplest, cleanest solution.

I can't afford to wait for my money. I literally live on my PayPal balance sometimes.

I don't want a weekly payout like other sites do. I want my money within a day, like most professional credit card processing companies do. If eBay institutes a payment system and holds my money, I'll be closing down my eBay biz and either move it to my own website or find something else more fun to do like Mary Kay etc.

On Etsy you can get the money right away - it's just that they have a weekly disbursal system if you just let them do it all. They handle the money a little differently - for instance, you purchase shipping labels from them, and I have money go directly to my checking account, etc.
I don't think money holds will go over too well if eBay tries it - the site is too big and diverse.

I am not a fan. Look at a site like TRadesy, it could take weeks to get a payout. Etsy at least is more reliable, but you only get payment 1x a week.
No way that I trust Ebay to be competent with this.
