I want to move all my photos that are stored in my vista computer in windows photo gallery to a newer windows 7 laptop. Is there a way to do this? I was thinking to download them to a thumb drive then try to install them in the other computer. Is there an easy way to do this?

That is the easy way to do it. Transfer them to the thumb drive, then transfer them to the new computer. Just find the folder they are in, select All and drag to the drive.

Jeremy, another question. If I transfer them to the thumb drive will they still remain in the original computer. The last thing I want to do is to lose them all. I am such a geek.

I'm honestly not sure. I have done this with some things and it's moved them but also left them on the original folder, but I've also had some instance where it just moved them. It could be dependent on the file type. I've honestly never looked into the reason it does it.
The best thing to do in that case, is to highlight them all (select all) and right click on one of them, select copy (or just hit Ctrl-C). Then go to your thumb drive and right click and select paste (or hit Ctrl-V). Then you're only copying the pictures instead of moving them.

If by any chance you have Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security you can transfer them by installing your Norton Product on your new computer - they allow install on up to 10 devices. Then just go into the program and check off what you want to transfer and then you can open up on the new computer. I had to call Norton support the first time I did this and they did it for me remotely. Every new laptop I am able to transfer my pics and WORD documents using their system.
Another way is to use the CLOUD thing - I don't know anything about it except that you can store pics there on your account and then open up your account on your new computer and download them. Sort of like we used to do with a Photobucket account.

I have Carbonite on my old computer so I know that everything can transfer to the newer laptop but I wanted to keep the photos on both computers since the old one is a desktop and I use it more. But it is Vista and soon will really be a relic and I am afraid one day it will just die.

Do you have a network? Grab the folder over the network and move it?
