@dantes, I feel for Ernie. It's like my stray, Bad Cat, who couldn't understand why he was a second-class citizen and why I was so mean. I'm glad I relented for the last 6 months he was here.

Kudos to my two kittehs. I was so sick New Years weekend that I didn't even think to clean out the cat boxes. The kitties not only kept on using them (no accidents anywhere) they also stayed on the couch or the coffee table by me. ((((Hootie & Trixie))))

If I'm coughing, Hootie gets on the back of the couch (instead of on me) and Trixie takes the chair. Sometimes they swap. But they still stick around.

Our neurotic tuxedo exploded into some kind of rage in the middle of the night last night - woke me up by gouging claws into my face and neck. I came awake with a shock and yelled (it was surprisingly painful and I was disoriented because I sleep so hard), my neck was bleeding, the cat ran off, the DH shot away and started shaking me and calling my name. Here I am, shocked, bleeding in pain and being joggled like mad and yelled at. I jumped out of bed (with that stupid PF splint on) and started stumping around. The DH finally turned on the light and saw my neck and face. He thought I was having a nightmare which is why he was shaking me and calling my name.
I went in and washed the scratches and dressed them and went back to bed. Cassie the tux has been sticking close to me today, always in my study when I'm in here, but I never did trust her around my face.
The DH thinks she may have gotten trapped between me and the covers and was suffocating or had a bad dream. I look like someone tried to strangle me.

Awwww, (((Chap)))
When Bubby was a kitten she took a great interest in everything I did. Once when I was heaving my guts up into the loo, she jumped up onto the seat to watch. Then she decided to pat me on the forehead with her paw. If I hadn't been vomiting I would have laughed.
And whenever I used to sneeze she'd go, "Meff". So adorable.

Lamington just turned 14 in November. And the last few nights he's been sleeping with me for the first time ever! He sneaks in in the wee hours and curls up next to my stomach.
I did wonder if he was sick, but he's only doing it at night - not being clingy all day. So I think it's just that he wants to be present the very minute I wake up so he can get a good breakfast deal. An early-bird special. He's not a big meower. He communicates through soulful gazes and sheer physical presence. When he wants a pat he scratches my arm or leg, whichever's closest. Only gently, but I do wonder why he never learnt to draw his claws in.

Cassie is turning 16 next month (we think - she may be closer to 17 for all we know - she's a rescue). She tends to stick close to me if she's not outside since she's been under the weather and was in the hospital. This means she can yak away at me, follow me around and demand my attendance on her person, have me throw balls and bottle caps for her and the like.
The poor thing has kidney failure and I have to give her subcutaneous fluids every other day whilst the DH holds her in his lap. Her weight went from 9 lb to 6.5 lb and though she still has bursts of energy where she runs around and gets into trouble, I can tell she has slowed down.

My kitty was missing for almost 3 weeks. We looked everywhere for him posted ads and flyers and nothing. He just one day turned up on the porch like nothing happened. He looked fine and well fed. Still do not know what happened but he stays close to me now.

That's so good to hear! One of my cats disappeared once. This was years ago when I lived in SF - she was indoor/outdoor, always came in when I got home from work and stayed in all night. One day she didn't show up. I posted flyers, searched all over the neighborhood but nada. Eight days later I heard meowing at the front door, opened it up and she strolled in like everything was fine.
She was an indoors-only cat after that.

Kewpie has gone off wandering again. She turns 16 in a few weeks and she's half blind in one eye now, so it's more worrying than it was before.
And Lamington is getting more clingy. I give him food but he only eats a little bit and if I leave the room he comes after me. So I'm facing a trip to the vet and when asked what's wrong I'll have to say, "He's being clingy."

Mr. Ex and I had a tuxedo named Socks who acted like the mayor of the street. Everyone on the street knew him. He liked to go visiting and, if there was a door open, in he'd go. He was always visiting the dry cleaners on the corner, three floors of interesting areas.
But once he disappeared for weeks. We searched without success. One day a newish resident knocked on the door and asked if we had a cat named Socks. He had wandered into her house one day and decided to live in her basement. She was feeding him and provided a litter box but she couldn't get him to come up the basement steps. I went into her house and, yep, there he was at the bottom of the steps. I had to go down, pick him up and carry him up the steps and out the door. That was the last time he disappeared.
He still went out and patrolled the street but stopped entering strange buildings.

That's very strange. Sounds like he got scared - but of what? Why wouldn't he come up the stairs?

Trixie has invented a new style of cat bowling.
Hootie will be sitting up looking around, and after a bit, he starts nodding off, but still sitting up.
Trixie waits until she sees him nodding, then she zooms by and sideswipes him like bowling ball does to a bowling pin. He falls right over.
It's the only way she can knock him over, otherwise he sees her and pins her down first.

I feel sorry for poor, elderly Hootie, but Trixie might extend his life by keeping him stimulated.

He either gets up and goes after her and pins her down, or he stalks off to somewhere else in the house with a "I totally knew you were going to do that and I was nice enough to let you do it" look on his face.

Don't be. He's back to giving her a hard time about getting on the bed some nights. Really annoys me. But she gets him back, she gets my lap as soon as I sit down on the couch and doesn't give it up. He can also be really pushy at mealtime.

I'm getting used to Lamington being my new little shadow, but why does he have to walk in front of me? I know cats are superior to humans and should always take precedence, but couldn't he walk a few steps in front of me, instead of just in front of my feet?
Plus he doesn't know where we're going, or he doesn't trust me not to nip off in another direction, so he stops and looks back at me every few feet.
Progress is slow at my house. And going upstairs - I can't even talk about it.
But he's learning the word "kitchen", probably because that's where the "food" is. He won't learn the word "toilet", perhaps because of his delicate sensibilities. But his delicate sensibilities don't stop him coming in and sitting at my feet. Or on my feet.

This cat tale is called - My Cat is Disgusting.
I'll preface this with - Ernie is a permanent (lucky) part of our family now. And he's gross. So if you're sensitive, just stop reading.
Ernie is with us for the long haul, good or bad. We committed to the little baby. And he is a baby who gets scared and needs to learn how to act at times. I don't think he was given a chance in the first year of his life by his former owner. He found us. So... He does respond to a sharp, NO! And that's good.
So on to the tale - He is the king of carnage. I have never seen such a disgusting gross cat. He won't stop killing everything he sees. He was recently outside the fifth wheel pulling guts out of a mouse he found. He just looked up at me like a Walking Dead Walker with crap hanging out of his mouth. Then he tried to come inside with stuff still hanging. THAT didn't happen. I woke up to a pile of mouse bodies outside the fifth wheel door - literally stacked. He leaves bodies outside the main doors of the building. We also suspect he's leaving bodies outside the neighbors gate. Mice, rabbits, and birds. I considered getting him a collar with a bell, but I don't want him to get hooked on any car parts. We do have a lot of coyotes, fox, raccoons, etc... He needs to be able to run.
Sorry to gross anyone out. I just walked outside a bit ago and he was running by with a rabbit in his mouth. All I ever say to him is - Really, Ernie? He's always hunting something.
I feed him everyday, twice a day. He gets soft and crunchy food. Plus he gets treats. He's been wormed and has had all of his shots. I need to find out what other (extra) shots he needs with all this carnage. I'm hoping I can get pills over the counter rather than take him in.
So this is my vent tale of a gross cat.
I do throw away all the carnage. Gloves and bags both thrown in the dumpster.

He's still a serial killer. He's creating some form of sacrificial alter outside the door. I was telling DH about the rabbit, and DH caught him with one yesterday as well. It was definitely a different one, and he doesn't seem to like the back end of them. I have to call the vet today and find out about a booster or more shots, or pills.... whatever he needs so he doesn't get sick from all this stuff. Here's the little offender himself.

If you seriously want to put a warning bell on Ernie, there are lots of different kinds of safety collars made for cats. Some have break-away latches, some have stretch panels built in. If you decide to do this, buy multiples -- 'cause I'm betting that Ernie will go through a lot of them!

I would love to put a bell on Ernie. He's killing a lot of birds, too.
It has to be a real safety collar, it has to let loose. He's everywhere on the property. He has to contend with wire fencing, vehicles, parts, etc... I don't want him snagged. We have a lot of wild animals that will turn him into chow.

If I remember correctly, the break-away latches open at the slightest tug....

It was definitely a different one, and he doesn't seem to like the back end of them. Oh, he's a nice pussy cat! As he gets older the hunting will slow down, but not til he's 10 or so, lol. Have you thought that he's killing all these things in gratitude to you for keeping him? If he's stacking them at the door, he wants you to notice. It's totally natural cat behaviour and I've never told mine off for it. I create limits - if I had a pet bird in a cage I'd tell the cat "No!" Just like when they claw the furniture it's "No!" But if they're out killing common wildlife or sharpening their claws on trees, go at it, I say. I just fervently hope they never get any endangered birds or lizards or whatever. My dad's last two cats were super rabbit-catchers. Well, one was and she taught the other, but he sometimes used to "play" too much and lose his rabbit. If it was a full-grown rabbit they used to eat the shoulders and save the bottom half for the next day, in a shady spot where no one would steal it. Do you think Ernie's doing this? You can tell because his stomach will be enormous and he'll refuse the food you offer. I think you're expecting him to be a town cat in a country environment. Except for the coyotes, etc, he's in cat heaven and I think you should let him enjoy his time. Put limits on him - he can't come inside covered in guts, and whatever else you really hate. But you clean up Flyer's "leavings", I assume, so why not Ernie's rabbit guts? And I agree with the breakaway collar, if you must have a bell. A stretchy one will just leave him hanging somewhere. lol, I had a friend whose cat had a collar and bell because they were horrified at it killing birds. After a couple of weeks with the collar it started bringing birds to them again. They watched him and realised he'd found a way of kind of hunching up one shoulder so his neck muffled the bell sound.

One time I was feeding a friend's cats while he was out of town. He'd left a window cracked so that they could come and go as they pleased. On the second day I found a (dead) baby bird in the middle of the living room. Day 3 - another bird, same spot. Day 4 - same thing, same place. Day 5 - yet another bird. Day 6 my friend came home (thankfully). I figured the cats were leaving me sacrificial offerings to bring their owner back.
