I keep getting those Windows 10 pop-ups and I don't want it. How can I tell if I have my computer set to auto update? DD usually sets these things up for me.

Neither can a gas station's back office computer. We've had to go restore quite a few because the back office computer was upgraded to Windows 10 and it screwed up all the programming for the station and store.

holy fark...I woke up to the shitastrope of the automatic upgrade this morning!
I constantly get the popups, but for some reason today it actually processed. I had to decline and roll back. i'm beyond annoyed.
i have to back up before i'll even consider it (my win8.1 is unstable to begin with, i need a fresh install). i do NOT appreciate Microsoft making me do anything.

How do those using windows 10 like it? Was it a pain to learn? I've been declining the pops but it seems like it's inevitable. I hate change, especially when it comes to technology

I stopped the pop ups but I don't remember how I did it. Haven't seen one in ages and I just looked at my Updates list and all the ones about Windows 10 showed FAILED.

Kritter, if you figure out how you stopped the pop-ups, please let us know.

I have always refused the Microsoft update downloads onto my machines unless they were driver updates. Not letting that Windows 10 onto my laptop or desktop, no way. I just purchased a new computer several months ago and paid a bundle to get an HP Windows 7. I'm seriously thinking of getting another laptop in Windows 7 and saving it before they no longer sell them.
DH has Windows 10 and he hates it, says Microsoft controls all the programs, the cloud thing, etc.
Follow the instructions in the link provided by Classring to shut off all attempts to download updates onto your computers. I just checked all ours here.

Kritter, if you figure out how you stopped the pop-ups, please let us know. OK, I think I got rid of it by uninstalling a windows update and I think the update was KB3035583. I went into the updates or maybe all the downloads and found the Microsoft Windows Update with that number and then deleted it.

Desire DH has Windows 10 and he hates it, says Microsoft controls all the programs, the cloud thing, etc.A bunch of that rubbish can be fixed - if there's interest, let me know. It has to be done through the command prompt but there's a regular procedure to do it. Now that the big service pack has been issued, it's a good time to do it. I have Win10 on both my regular desktop and the tablet but XP on my old desktop because of some proprietary software that wasn't compatible with Win7. Since that particular contract is probably not coming back I could maybe upgrade it, but I'm thinking of using it as a free standing machine off our network and with no internet access - like a big file drawer.

I read all the instructions but it's not making sense to me as this is what my setting look like. I haven't changed or tinkered with them? What should I check/uncheck?

I was unclear on it myself, bliss.
I unchecked the "Recommended updates" box. From what I've read, the Windows 10 installation has moved to "Recommended update" status, so it will be automatically installed. By unchecking that box, I believe the "Important updates" will automatically be installed, but you'll manually look through the "Recommended updates" to see whether or not you want to install them.

You need to also change the "install automatic updates" as well. You can set it to download but let me choose what/when to install, or something like that. That way it tells you when updates are ready, and you click the notice to go to update center and pick your updates to install. Each one on the list will have a short blurb about what it does/fixes.

Where the green check mark is that says....... install updates automatically
There is a drop down arrow right at the end of that that gives you three more choices.
2nd choice is.... download updates but let me choose whether to install them (if they get downloaded they will probably get installed)
3rd choice is....check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them (USE THIS OPTION to keep them from getting downloaded)
4th choice is.......never check for updates
I also took out give me recommended updates in the bottom section and update on their products

Thanks, desire! I changed mine as you suggested.
When there are updates available, do you get a pop-up message or something, or do you have to actively check something every day or so?

Terri, down on the bottom taskbar to the right are little icons. You can set it up to show the icons and notifications, or just the notifications. You click the little "UP ARROW" and customize it. I have it set to show the little icons AND the notifications on several items, so there are little icons lined up there on the taskbar. One of them is the Notification Center (a little white flag) that tells you if there are updates available. It pops up a small message, or you can just run your mouse over it anytime and it will tell you that there are messages for you.

Gotcha. I have the white flag on my taskbar, so I'll remember to pay attention to it. Right now it's telling me to change my windows update settings. LOL.
Thanks, again!

I upgraded everything to Windows 10, but only because everything I own had Windows 8.1. If I had Windows 7, I wouldn't have. This. I was going to say that my laptop came with 10 and it is actually better than 8. But if I had a choice of getting 7 I would have used that instead. So if you have Windows 8, I would let the 10 update come through. If you have 7, guard it with your life. The problem I am having with the recent update is now some of my drivers on Chrome arent working right. I cant watch Netflix or Amazon video now. (I know first world problems)

Terri,
When you go to check for updates in the Action Center it will look like this. You can click on and see what updates you want to download and install. I always install the new drivers and security updates, never the new interent explorer updates that seem to mess everything up.
This notice shows that I have 13 important updates and 46 optional updates available to view if I want to download and install. You just click the blue links on to view the list. Before you download anything there is an explanation over on the right that describes what the download is all about.
