Sometimes I want to ask if anyone watches a certain TV show or saw a recent movie, but I don't want to start a thread about it. I thought this might be a good catch all thread for that kind of chat. If one specific person/event dominates, we can move it to its own thread. I hated seeing the Astronaut Wives Club end. But it was a perfect show for summer - like a beach read. Even though it was kind of light and fluffy I won't forget again that Alan Shepard was the first American in space. That was one of those tidbits of information I learned so long ago that it was pushed out of my brain to make room to remember more stuff. I always answered John Glenn or Neil Armstrong when it came up on Jeopardy. If I were to find the wardrobe for the actress who played Rene Carpenter I could cross everything else off my thrift store wish list. I coveted some of the home decor too.

Hey Elly, get out of my brain! Lol, I thought we should have a thread about this too.
When I watch a TV show or movie I always notice the music and sets. This may lead me to research and download a song I heard or to rearrange my furniture. I notice the clothing on some shows or movies for instance Downton Abbey. Lady Mary wore some really swoon worthy coats and dresses. Oddly, many of the wardrobes in British shows and movies are used over again in other shows/movies. I guess they don't have the huge budgets of US shows and movies. Here's a website that features recycled costumes. recycledmoviecostumes.tumblr.com/

I have so many "favorite" shows I have watched from beginning to end over the years. And I'm currently discovering other great shows on Amazon/Netflix/Hulu. I was sad when Dexter, The Following and The Bridge ended. Oh, also The Killing. I have recently started watching The Good Wife, which I'm really into. I discovered House of Cards at the beginning of the summer, and have already watched all 3 seasons. There's a show on Netflix that I enjoyed, Call the Midwife (it's a BBC show). Need to see when the next season will be loaded This lull in the summer of all the exciting shows has really made me rethink having cable. We got rid of it No need with Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/Showtime/HBO that you can pick from.

Since my diagnosis, I've watched more TV than in the past - or I should say DVDs, as we don't have cable, only the digital networks - so there isn't much to watch on TV at our house.
Some series I've watched are Call the Midwife, The Gilmore Girls, The Land Girls, Downton Abbey, and Lark Rise to Candleford, which I'm almost finished with.
I'm on the lookout for another series to watch and as you can see, I really like BBC shows. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!

Great thread!
I'm a news junkie, so I get plenty of that. The only other show I watch is, The Walking Dead. Now they have, Fear the Walking Dead, which airs tonight. YES!
It's not the blood & gore of zombies that I like, it's the remaining people trying to survive that hooks me.

Great idea, but folks, also feel free to start individual threads if you like. It's the Chat Area, there is no limit. More discussions are good, actually. The more discussions we have, the more the bots will search us. The more they search us, the better chance of us being found on search engines. We get found on search engines, things might sell (assuming people will start listing stuff in the Sell Your Stuff area).
Just a thought.
And while I'm thinking, when does the fall season start? I want my weekly fix of NCIS New Orleans and Hawaii Five 0.

Liz, Call The Midwife is one of my favorite series. It's shown on PBS if anyone is interested. Amazon also has the first three seasons available. Season 5 will probably be aired early next year.
Couldn't get into The Following, too much bloodshed. I've watched all seasons of The Good Wife and, though enjoyable, IMHO it has out stayed its welcome. I think writers/producers should realize when a show is coasting on its laurels and end it appropriately. I loved Nurse Jackie but was glad when it finally ended.
Empty-nester, there are tons of British series available. Do you enjoy costume drama? Mysteries? One old favorite is The Duchess of Duke Street. Another is Lillie. Endeavour is wonderful especially if you enjoyed Inspector Morse. You can find the titles to all the Masterpiece Theater series here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpiece_%28TV_series%29

I'm early into Season 3 (and it looks like there are 6 seasons on Amazon). So it hasn't quite worn it's welcome out yet. I love blood and gore and suspense. I also like law. And drama. And some comedy.
I can't wait for Scandal to come back on. Of course, I'll be watching it during the weekend on Hulu after it's already aired, but I'm OK with that.
I don't know what it is about Call the Midwife, but I really like that show.
Val, I think the Fall season starts in September?

We don't have tv out where we live, so we watch shows/movies on Netflix. Some faves...Breaking Bad, Weeds, Dexter, Entourage, Orange is the New Black, and The Walking Dead which season four will be available next week. Woot! I also just started watching Cougar Town. Thing about watching shows on Netflix is it's very easy to binge watch so we are always waiting on the next season to be available.
I also like American Horror Story mainly because of Jessica Lange and my all time favorite show Criminal Minds. I loved the original CSI but it wasn't the same once the main characters started leaving, especially Grissom.

Well poo. I was hoping I could find the season start dates, but if they're on the CBS website, I'm not seeing them. OTOH, I may have to spring for their All Access subscription. They added seasons 1-3 of Nash Bridges. I LOVED Nash Bridges.

I somehow got hooked on a ridiculous Lifetime series. Devious Maids. I love that show and the character Evelyn Powell is my favorite.

I love CSI:Cyber but a lot of viewers didn't get it. Now that the 'dark web' has been brought out to the mainstream via the Ashley Madison hack and data dump, I wonder if more people will 'get it' and the viewership go up?

Isn't Devious Maids the show that Eva Longoria is producer/director/writer whatever on?

Val, you can check IMDB for dates of new episodes of your favorite programs. www.imdb.com
Liz, I really enjoy a series if it stimulates me into learning more about the era, location, character, etc. I knew more than most people in the US about the East End but not so much about Poplar, where Call The Midwife is based. So it gave me the push to read up on that area of London and that time period.
I'm also guilty of waiting a day or two to watch favorites with On Demand so I can skip commercials. PBS spoiled me.

So I have a dumb question. I have Direct TV and my favorite spot to watch tv is on the big TV in the living room. It's not a Smart TV so how can I easily and cheaply get Netflix in that room? Is there something that I can buy and plug into one of the ports on the TV?

We use the Wii for streaming, but if you don't have a game system you could get something like a Roku. Or even Google Chromecast if you're running Windows on a tablet or laptop or have a Smart Phone.

I don't have a Wii, game system or even a dvd player that's hooked up. I wish I would have gotten a smart tv for the living room. I have one in my bedroom and like it but watching movies in there isn't as comfortable as the couch.

If you want something simple, I would suggest a Roku.
We have recently purchased 2 of them. We LOVE it. We have a blu Ray player that can stream, but the Roku doesn't "buffer" the shows (sometimes it's not strong/fast enough for the wifi signal). We haven't had that problem with the Roku. They also have some of their own channels that are free.
For Hulu, we purchased a 12 month card on eBay for $27. We pay for Netflix monthly. We ditched DirecTV and haven't looked back. I hated them so much!

On series 1 episode 3 of Call the Midwife, I like it. Watching on the desk top.

Just wanted to give a quick update. I made figuring out how to get Netflix on my living room TV a priority. Went to Radio Shack yesterday and got a Chromecast stick thing, ran into some problems getting it set up with my wifi but a quick call to Century Link and that pesky problem was tackled and right now I've got Call the Midwife on my living room tv. Woohoo!!!
It was only $35, down the road I might go with the Roku, for now I'm satisfied.

That's what I like about Chromecast - that you can cast anything on one of your devices to the TV. We have Direct TV, so we can watch things on demand from the Direct TV website. So if someone tells me in November that I should have been watching some new fall series that started in September, I can go back and watch it and cast it to my TV. It has maybe a little more of a learning curve than Roku, but I find it more versatile in what it allows me to watch on my TV.

All the shows I like are on CBS. I just sit down every other weekend, turn the laptop on and tune to cbs.com and watch for free I may spring for the $6/mo all access so I can see older shows. They've added some favorites to the line up over the summer. I'm not into TV enough to pay for cable or Dish. It's just not worth it. I'd rather read a book.

I've added Orange is the New Black into the mix, definitely liking the Chromecast so far.

I watch what isnon when it is on. Can't be bothered to figure out all the newfangled devices. I liked the few episodes of Astronauts' Wives Club that I remembered to watch - would like to read the book. I mostly watch sitcoms, reruns of old sitcoms and home decor type shows while either working on eBay, or perusing the boards or Facebook.

I'm just the opposite -- I'm so dependent on my DVR that I just switched to a better system, so I can record 4 shows at once, rather than only 2. Pretty much everything I watch is either recorded or On Demand. It's not that I'm too busy to fit broadcast times into my schedule - I'm just spoiled by having a DVR full of my own favorite shows waiting for me.

Give me an episode of Fixer Upper or a rerun of Seinfeld or Modern Family and I'm in heaven. I'm not entertained by intense, stressful stuff.

It's more about variety than intense stressful stuff. I guess I get bored easily with the regular easily accessible options.

I know I'm in the minority. My kids, DH and everyone else I know like the intense stuff. I watched a couple seasons of "The Americans" with DH and DS and I definitely get drawn in when I'm watching. I think it's extremely well-acted and written, but I get so stressed! I've never liked horror movies either. I'm just a boring, light entertainment kind of person.
