Wow-I just read about the earthquake. Didn't feel it in PA.

Everyone is complaining about their auto rates. They joined everyone else and raised their rates. It is ridiculous the way everything is going up. My car insurance went way down when I changed to Progressive. I have the Snap Shot thing on and have only traveled 37 miles in 3 weeks.
So it helps to have a good driving record and seldom drive. But I am weird and old.
Apparently, if one has a wreck, Progressive will go very high, though.

Everyone is complaining about their auto rates. They joined everyone else and raised their rates. It is ridiculous the way everything is going up. Supposedly it's due to increased prices on cars, higher prices on parts due to demand/supply issues, and the amount of uninsured motorists in one's area. I kinda find that hard to believe 100%, since I raised my deductibles and my premiums dropped by 50%. If all of the above is why my rates jumped so high, getting an additional $250 or $500 from me for deductibles on damage events does not justify that kind of decrease. But whatever. It's all a racket. Sunny and 80 today. And I'm stuck inside with a blood test, a bone density test, and a mammogram. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Afterwards I have to pick up an order at Bath & Body Works and then my fixed computer at Best Buy. Not my idea of an enjoyable Friday. Eh, I'll get over it I was curious so I googled it - Texas is leading California now in low magnitude earthquakes, due mainly to all the damn fracking going on in the state There are times at night when I feel a rumbling that I figured was a train going by. Except I'm not anywhere close to train tracks, and trains tend to run regularly so I'd feel them on a regular basis. Could be it was small quakes. Interesting. www.beg.utexas.edu/texnet-cisr/texnet/earthquake-catalog

I was impressed with my quote from GEICO and I added Accident Forgiveness for $5 a month. They suggested that I do that Snapshot thing but since my truck has a habit of slamming on the brakes when I am backing out of my driveway if the truck thinks another car is too close. Apparently the truck doesn't think I am paying attention. I could disable it but then that would disable something else that is OK so I just deal with it. The brake slamming thing would not look good to Snapshot.
I am happy with my GEICO quote and I know they are a good company because I have had car insurance with them before plus I could bundle with them as they already have my house insurance through their affiliate, Travelers.

We felt the earthquake here in Manhattan. Epicenter was in New Jersey. First I thought it might be a helicopter too close to the building (I was roused from sleep) but realized pretty quick it was an earthquake. No biggie; had a bigger one here in the '70s. The ones I experienced in California were real conversation stoppers. Yawn...

jesmelric Chap, I was wondering what snags are? Is that like a flash flood? Also the tulips are gorgeous! Maybe you can share some photos of the cherry blossoms as well
Tree snags are large, mostly dead or dry tree branches that come loose in storms. They can be a real hazard because when they fly loose it's a lot of this wood that comes crashing down as it takes a pretty good velocity of wind to do it - they're a big hazard here. A few weeks ago during a squall we had a snag come loose from one of our giant evergreens and miss our heat pump by about two feet. If it had hit the pump, it may have really damaged it.
Here are some photos of our pride and joy - the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington - it's one of the most spectacular shows, though one sees all sorts of smaller trees along streets and roads. I attended classes at a couple of the buildings right in this quadrangle.
In the second photo you can see all the people (non-students) walking around enjoying the trees, taking photos, etc. It's usually pretty warm this time of year (mid/upper 50s) so one can sit outside and enjoy them if it's not raining.
Though we've had a quick return of winter, but not as bad as some of you guys with snow. Just rain and mid-40s - my friend and I got wet going out for a short run with Dickens the dog. Every time Dickens sees me he remembers me and jumped up onto my leg to say hello - I'm really complimented!
Wow, those are gorgeous! I feel like I could never live in the Pacific NW, being so used to tropical weather and a lot of sunshine, but I think those trees might actually make it worth it I actually planted a cherry tree 2 years ago, but it's not that kind, it's the only kind that will grow here. It hasn't had any blossoms yet and when it does they aren't nearly as spectacular. They are more white and way less abundant. But we make do
We have dead branches that come loose in storms as well, interesting I've never heard them called snags. They can be very damaging. We had one hit our patio some years ago, and it wasn't even that big and caused quite a bit of damage. That's why we just had that huge oak tree taken down. Too much of a hazard.
We are still enjoying some lovely weather, with some rain expected early next week. We were supposed to have a good view of the eclipse on Monday but now they are saying not so much due to the weather. Monday is DH's birthday and we have our annual physical exams then we are going to Home Depot as we need a new lawn mower. So if we see the eclipse that's fine but if not that's fine too. It's so crazy to me that some people still have snow in April!!
No major plans over the weekend other than bathing Janey and DH wants to grill some fajitas. He wants a quiet birthday and that works for me lol.

Apparently the SAPD and TX DOT are expecting traffic issues Monday during the solar eclipse. This could be interesting. Good thing I work from home and only traffic I have to worry about is a cat getting in my way

Well, so much for Snapshot. Got into my car to go to chemo and my 14-month-old battery was dead. Called my daughter's mechanic and while I was waiting for him to come over, I googled to find that dead batteries are a problem.
The mechanic mentioned the option to do the Snapshot on my cell, which I had forgotten about.
So I wrote to my insurance agent.
I wasn't anxious to get my chemo and be sick all evening anyway.
Gorgeous trees Chap!

So I am now hooked up with Progressive Snapshot on my cell. It will know when I am driving??? I don't have to log in or anything. And now I guess that I won't keep my cell with me when I am mowing because it will think that I am driving. Totally weird.

This might be what you need to do:
What happens if my trip type is incorrect? If you notice that we miscategorized a trip, you have an opportunity in the app to correct it.
How does the app know if I'm driving? The mobile app detects movement of a certain speed and distance to determine when a trip starts. No action is necessary on the part of the user.
If you're just driving the lawn mower around the yard, it might not register as a trip at all. Why not just call Progressive and ask?

I did ask the rep when I was talking to her. And she said that the mower might register as driving.
She even said that if I were to ride a scooter in Walmart, it might show up as driving.
I don't use the scooters.
And if I ride in a car and am not the driver, I will have to correct that. I would probably only ride with my daughter in an emergency, and she is anything but a cautious driver.

Suposedly all the driving apps can tell if you are the driver or the passenger. Guess you'll just have to mow your lawn to find out. I'm guessing you have the phone with you while mowing for emergencies?

Yes, I keep my cell with me for emergencies. I can't wear my fall alert watch since it calls the EMTs for some reason. Right now I don't see any way to designate mowing or as a passenger but the rep said more options will show up after I make my first trip

You could always get a cheap burner phone for the lawn mower

Could you turn the phone off when mowing the lawn, but keep it with you so you could turn it on if you needed it?

Could you turn the phone off when mowing the lawn, but keep it with you so you could turn it on if you needed it? hmmm, that is an idea. And I never thought of that since I turn off my cell at night (it sleeps with me). Otherwise I keep getting notifications from whatever that I can't seem to shut off.
I will have to experiment with it when my swamp-yard dries up so that I can mow.
In fact, I am going to enter in a chat on line to see if I am allowed to turn off my phone.
Seriously, this is a lot of work to save some $$.

Emerald-thanks for the input. I read all of the FAQ's and I won't be able to shut off my phone at night, but maybe once a week when I mow, it won't be a problem.
But first, I will have to see if it registers as driving while I am mowing.

So totally not interested in it so it makes no difference to me but might be a bummer for those peeps who set their chairs up in the vacant lot down the street to watch the last partial one or whatever it was.
Exactly! Especially when you don't know how much money you will be saving.

I could never be held hostage to an insurance company, having them dictate to me when I can keep my phone on or turn it off. There must be a lot of fraud going on with that program. I could take DH's cell with me while driving if I was late and had to drive fast or something like that. We have a landline and half the time I don't know where my cell phone is around here, but it's shut off a lot. I just don't get this whole program for elderly people. I understand the younger kids that live by their cell, or those without landlines, but still, what's to keep anyone from switching phones while they drive somewhere?
ETA: what about when your phone goes dead and needs to be recharged? Do they allow for that?

The discount was already applied when I signed up for the Snapshot, and it might go lower.
I just backed my car out of the garage since I had to reset the maintenance reminder since my battery had died. So that "big" trip should show up eventually.
I think that I have figured out how to stop all of the crazy notifications on my cell. Had to do a deep dive into the options. We will see.

Just curious about this discount. I drive a 2022 vehicle with full coverage and lowest deductibles and my insurance for 6 months is a smidge over $400. I know different rates for different parts of the country and different vehicles but can you give me a ballpark on your discounted coverage amount and the age/coverage of your vehicle.

I was reading up on this. Progressive already had a proposed lawsuit due to the attached snapshot ruining batteries and electrical systems in cars. If Denise's car would not start the other day, apparently this hasn't been fully resolved as they say. Either way, hard attachment or phone, this program seems like trouble. I'd flunk the driving for sure after I read what they check for. I'm a good driver and can switch highway lanes well and do it easily but they would probably say excessive. I also brake a bit too hard going down my hill right here, the end of the road is steep coming up to the stop sign. I also have pulled over and used my cell to order pizza to pick up on the way home. They track if you use your cell phone. If my insurance starts this and it's mandatory I will need to find a new company. www.classaction.org/progressive-snapshot-dead-battery-electrical-lawsuit

IMO I don't think it will ever be mandatory. It is more of a gimmick to make people think they will be saving big bucks. I was reading reviews and people were reporting savings not worth the hassle. Personally I don't like the idea of my insurance company tracking me wherever I go. My truck seems to be doing a good job on that already according to the monthly reports on my driving that I get from Hyundai.
I have that Snapshot option with GEICO and didn't consider it for a minute because I think it is one of those shady smoke and mirror insurance gimmicks that try to trick people especially seniors into thinking they are getting a deal. Insurance companies don't do things to save people money.

I chose limited tort. My car is a 2019 Honda CRV and isn't nearly as gorgeous as your truck. They consider mileage (mine just turned to 9,000), and credit rating.

I asked if it would say where I go, and was told no. I really don't care if it knows that I go to chemo and doctor's appointments, which is my life.
The info that was sent by my car device just told the mileage that I drove and said that there were no events. No indication of where I went.

I was using USAA's app for discounts but after I discovered it was recording me picking up the cell phone to check the map directions as using my phone while driving (rather than hands free usage), I deleted the stupid app.
That's a really low premium, Denise. I don't think the hassle of the Progressive app is worth whatever savings you might get from it. My premium is a lot more than that, and that's with reduced mileage, no accidents my fault, no tickets, good credit score.

I read that it does track you and some woman parked in a liquor store parking lot next to a gym and somehow it got recorded as going to the liquor store. A bad thing to them I guess. All kinds of crazy stories reported in online forums about this apparatus. It says to not brake for yellow lights, braking seems to be their biggest concern.
When my sister visited me last September she flew in and rented a car. We drove to Massachusetts for my niece's baby shower in that car. All the way up there the car would emit a beep, it was driving me crazy. I asked her about it and she said it was some kind of device on the car that could be disconnected, but she didn't know anything about it. She drives fast, goes over the yellow lines on back roads, and brakes a lot. I had noticed every time she went over the line on the curves the car would beep. I never knew about any programs, but it must have been something like this on that car. Now I'm wondering if she will have a hard time on car rentals from this company if she tries again. They must have a profile on her from that car.
