I'm finally finishing up with my skate videos- getting 'em listed and out of the way. (hope this is the right spot for this question). I have a 1988 Powell Peralta skateboards Public Domain (Bones Brigade video 4) vhs tape that's smaller than the regular size tapes. It doesn't fit in a normal US VCR but the box doesn't mention the format. IS this what's called PAL? I'll post a picture in a minute to show the size difference. Thanks!!
ETA- I tried to insert an image but it's resisting my efforts. The Powell tape is about 1 1/2" smaller than a regular tape, and the spinny-spindle thingies are closer together than usual, if that helps.

It's Betamax. Back in the 80s there were 2 tape versions- VHS and Betamax. Beta was better and more expensive, so went the wayside while cheaper VHS took off.

Thank you Stay- THATS what I was trying to remember, lol. Betamax has to be even more obsolete than VHS. Guess I'll list it anyway but won't hold my breath

I remember when video stores first opened, there were Beta and VHS sections and I got catalogs with choice. Yeah, Beta went obsolete long before VHS. Funny, I had a (thankfully) now ex-BIL that insisted Beta would rule and we were crazy to buy a VHS machine. I also remember DH & I would load up on a bunch of VHS rentals and copy them over a weekend because buying new was around $100 for a new movie. That stopped when something was added so you couldn't copy anything. Those were fun times.
I hope that tape does well considering it has to be a lot rarer than VHS version. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm gonna list it just to see what happens. After testing VHS tapes, taking pix and listing them while trying to not mix things up all day, I'm sorta punchy. Definitely gonna have a glass of wine with dinner tonight :-)

Betamax makes it more rare, but virtually unwatchable. I wonder how many Betamax players there are out there these days.

There are betamax players around, just as there are old 8-track players around. The individual who purchases that will have the capability to transfer it to a movie file. I'd forgotten all about that Betamax v VHS. The snobs were all about Betamax lol.
