Mine just started today and is apparently only in areas where Uber can pick up and deliver for a fee of $7.99, which the Uber driver charges.
Good idea for the heavy stuff.

Interesting. So, it's actually picked up and delivered by Uber. It says starting at $7.99 (buyer pays), so I'm curious if it's weight or distance dependent.

I am reading through the Facebook group posts for info. I did check in Mercari for local stuff and so far it seems to be the $7.99 for the closest. I just looked at lightweight stuff so far, and that initial price went up, since I guess they live further away.
I can see eBay doing this too, and possibly with Uber as they have been hinting at it.

I just listed something on there that I had on Marketplace.....easy to do.
Apparently it is only the distance that determines the price. The items have to be 50 lbs or less, can fit into a car trunk and be no larger than 45" x 35" x 15".

I was looking at that - unfortunately, all I have that I'm selling that would be good for local pickup is too big for a car - a couple of bicycles and some Z-racks.

I have tons since Priority on Mercari from 1-5 pounds is $12....as long as they live fairly close to me.

Oopsie. Apparently Mercari has temporarily stopped their local pickup option because of problems with Uber.

It seems that some people were not following the rules about the size restrictions. As always, someone trying to game the system.

I could absolutely see that coming. I think Mercari would be better off designing a local pickup system that includes a QR code (unless they already have it and I just haven't found it) and leave people to figure out the logistics themselves.

Marketplace is booming so I am sure that is why Mercari wants to get some of that profit. My daughter started out only doing local pick-up on Marketplace but recently started to add shipping to her listings.
Now she is shipping up to a dozen packages a day. She is getting really good at picking up vintage and collectibles at estate sales. So now I am giving her packaging lessons and sharing my hoard of boxes.
