Maybe because all the outside cats freeze over the winter and so no kittens in the spring.
Also temperature and the number of daylight hours have a lot to do with female cats going into heat so warmer climates are more conducive to multiple litters per female cat.
Pre covid the North Shore Animal League from New York used to swing through the gulf states with their 18 wheeler picking up puppies and kittens from shelters and rescues to take back to their shelter because they had adopters with no animals to adopt.

Sunny, now known as Simon, checking out his new digs last night: He's a fearless little thing, even with Trixie hissing at him and Toby stalking him. Toby has relaxed the stalking this morning and has now just observing. Toby is out on the balcony right now, enjoying some alone time. Toby thought about coming back in a minute ago until I reminded him that Simon didn't have patio permission yet and the balcony was the only place Toby could be alone. Toby decided to stay outside a bit longer. Trixie is acting like an old time 1920's melodrama diva and it's funny. Well, maybe not to her but it's funny to me. She alternates between wanting attention from me, giving me indignant looks, and hissing at everything.

I so envy you for being able to add this adorable little guy to your kitty herd! 💖
Best of luck with the transition - Sounds like you'll need to get Trixie her own little fainting couch...

Simon is already surpassing my expectations for adjustment to his new home.
He came into foster from the wilds when he was around 8 weeks old. That is pretty late to turn around and he was on the line as to an ear tip when he was neutered. He just really warmed up to me in the last week or so and I think it was mainly because he was in love with Rosie. Rosie is a total lap kitten and if Rosie was in my lap, Simon wanted to be there too. In the last few days, he wanted in my lap even when Rosie was not there.
I have to give Kenya and Murphy credit. Between Kenya's hissing/growling at the kittens and Murphy's stalking, Simon was ready for Trix and Toby.

Simon and Toby are starting to play a bit now, mostly paw swipes around furniture. Simon decided the back part of the chairs are toys and started scratching on it. Simon's mom decided it's time for Simon to be introduced to the water bottle. Simon does not like the water bottle. The cats have free run of the house and furniture except for scratching the two upholstered chairs. They can nap on the chairs any time they want. In summer, one chair has a folded fleece throw on the seat (Trixie's preference) and the other chair does not (Toby's preference). In winter, both have fleece throws on the seat. They just aren't allowed to use the chairs as scratching posts. I think that's fair The rest of my furniture is claw safe and was selected with them in mind. I have sticky paw sheets on the part that Toby & Trixie found attractive. Looks like I'll have to order some more and temporarily cover the parts that Simon finds appealing.

Simon was good about using the scratching pads here. He liked that curved one that I showed you and also the cardboard inserts in the trackball things.
Probably just testing boundaries in his new place. Squirt him...he will learn.

He's discovered the wirebrush door mat you gave me and loves scratching on that. He's used the scratching posts on the big cat tree too.

LOL My cats love that doormat too. I have them in Tanji's room because I hate to put them on the porch and them they get ruined.

Simon let me pet him and pick him up so I put him on the desk. He discovered Toby's raised bed on one side of the desk and has now figured out how to jump off the desk, and how to get back up on the desk. He has a really loud purr for such a small kitty.

There are rescue groups up here in the Seattle/Everett area (very active) and I assume in Portland - there just aren't a lot of kittens and young cats from what I've read. A good friend of Angie's wants to adopt one of these kittens but he wants to declaw the front paws. I hope he never gets a cat until he learns better.

Just got home from the bake sale about 1/2 hour ago. It stays light so late that it didn't seem like it was 8:30 when I left.
Pretty sure we made enough from the bake sale plus the kitten adoption fees for the transport of the 4 kittens. They are going to Seattle and a couple of the adopters are driving in from nearby areas.
Angie said that one of the adopters said that the few kittens that go up for adoption are snapped up right away. The other cat that he adopted a couple of years ago came from North Carolina. All of the adopters have sent her videos of their cat. Another potential adopter called Angie while we were at the bake sale. At least we know what to do if we get another flood of kittens.

Toby and Simon are best buds now. Not to the extent that Toby is willing to share his favorite bed with Simon (can't blame him, Toby fills it up just by himself) but they're playing together and Toby is not being rough with Simon. Trixie finally gave in this morning and accepted the fact that Simon is here to stay. She's not friendly with him, but at least she's only growling when he comes up to the food bowl while she's eating. Can't say as I blame her on that. Simon is climbing on EVERYTHING and it's quite amusing. He is getting to know the water bottle however on the serious offenses.

Ninja left this morning to go to Angie's office so he can get to know Clover who he will be sharing a carrier with next Sunday on the first transport to Seattle.
Rosie is still here along with her future transport carrier mate, Cleo, who is hiding. I think she is hiding in the dining room but she could have moved while I was at Panera. Rosie is not looking for her and not even sure Rosie knows that Cleo is here.

Toby is a hoot when he's playing with Simon. They'll crouch, then run/leap to attack. Simon lands on Toby (who plays along), but when Toby's on the attack, he either stops right before he would have hit Simon, or jumps over Simon like leapfrog. Toby seems to know he's too big to play rough with Simon right now. They're really cute when they box. Simon will be on his back paws, sitting up and swatting at Toby with both paws, and then Toby just takes one paw and tips Simon over

How's Trixie adjusting, especially with Toby and Simon getting along so well?

Trixie finally acknowledged that Simon is here to stay. She'll do the nose touches with him, then she growls at him like she wants to remind him that she's a beotch. Simon just looks at her and walks off. He's figured out she's all bark and no bite, but we'll all too smart to point that out to Trixie

Simon has experience with Kenya and Murphy. Kenya is a hisser and Murphy is a swatter.
We provide a full service foster experience that covers all possible experiences in a new home.

Angie just sent me a pic of 5 kits that were found at a house on the next street over from me. Really surprising because my 4 street adjacent neighborhood is diligent on spay/neuter and we haven't had a kitten outbreak in years.

Angie is trying to find a foster for the feral momkat and the kits because she said the kits are only about 2 weeks old. We can't even find fosters for tame cats/kittens so I don't know how she is going to pull that off.
I would have taken the family into the cat pen if Chanel and Terrell weren't there.

Have Rosie and Cleo had their big trip yet? Simon likes to play fetch. It's sooooo cute. He even brings the ball back to me, drops it at my feet, and looks up at me like, "Well, what's taking you so long to toss it again?" I'll see if I can figure out the video on my cell phone and get some video.
