I just sold an expensive pair of earrings--$355. Lo and behold, lucky me, I am then notified that they sold because of Etsy's promotion on another site--at least they claim that that is how the buyer came to me. So they took $55 in extra fees for that. There is a very opaque way to opt out of this, if you even can, and I'm miffed. This "fee" was not built into the price of the earrings. I don't like this at all. I know they notified us about this wonderful obligatory "service" but I never thought it would happen to me. Really. So the point is, it could happen to you too. It's 15% off plus their regular fee plus the free shipping they are politely forcing people to do in order to be seen on their site.

I opted out of that promotional ad fee thing as soon as I possibly could. So far ::knock on wood:: my sales are doing just fine without it.

I opted out, too. There really is very little hard data accountability as to how they spend this money, and I don't trust their krap search and awesome genius metrics to leverage a dead fish.
ETA: Etsy is all about the 20% top grossing sellers - CFO Glaser even stated as much.

I just opted out too. Not happy that they just took an extra 15% on that big sale. My sales on Etsy are very, very low anyway. Lot's o' lookers with no $ action. I don't think paying through the nose for advertising my one sale a year is worth it.

That would have surprised and upset me, too. I'm kind of hating Etsy, but am using their site for cheap online storage. I actually had some sales though I hadn't expected any. First, of course, was a cancellation (Ditzy Etzy), but then two old kimono have sold. I'll load the rest of my vintage on there to keep track of it and hang onto the photos and description until fall/winter rolls around and I can sell the rest of it on Poshmark, where it has been selling for me.

I know how you feel Frakin- I occasionally get their CONGRATULATIONS message and cringe! I'll say it- I've come to despise Etsy. Right now my shop is on vacation and I'm not sure I'll reopen. This 15% 'gotcha' tax is the last straw... until they roll out the NEXT last straw. All the time spent at home has made me evaluate my business in general and whether the stress of dealing with a company I don't like is worth the $$. Honestly, for me I'm pretty sure it isn't. At least for now.

I was never a fan of listing fees. I always had a big bill before I ever made a dime and then never made enough to pay for it. In fact, I lost $50 before I stopped selling there and haven't been back.

I try not to let the stupid get to me, but every time I list something and that idiotic message about YOU'RE CHARGING TOO MUCH FOR SHIPPING comes up, I give Silverman the finger (literally) and carry on. They're making lots of money but I've even stopped shopping there because it's so full of drop shipped and Ali-Express rubbish posing as 'hand made'. But a lot of people don't care - they want whatever giftie dingus is cool for the next moment or two. I wish they'd just be honest and say they're just corporate shills who will do whatever to make money for the shareholders and not 'make commerce human' - it's hypocritical.

You didn't want to try the "free" shipping ruse?

I started listing again after closing my store and left the $35 and over for free but got rid of the stupid free shipping for anything else. Funny - all the Chinese and Indian sellers with the mass produced stuff charge plenty for shipping.
