He's still a serial killer. He's creating some form of sacrificial alter outside the door. I was telling DH about the rabbit, and DH caught him with one yesterday as well. It was definitely a different one, and he doesn't seem to like the back end of them. Oh, he's a nice pussy cat! As he gets older the hunting will slow down, but not til he's 10 or so, lol. Have you thought that he's killing all these things in gratitude to you for keeping him? If he's stacking them at the door, he wants you to notice. It's totally natural cat behaviour and I've never told mine off for it. I create limits - if I had a pet bird in a cage I'd tell the cat "No!" Just like when they claw the furniture it's "No!" But if they're out killing common wildlife or sharpening their claws on trees, go at it, I say. I just fervently hope they never get any endangered birds or lizards or whatever. My dad's last two cats were super rabbit-catchers. Well, one was and she taught the other, but he sometimes used to "play" too much and lose his rabbit. If it was a full-grown rabbit they used to eat the shoulders and save the bottom half for the next day, in a shady spot where no one would steal it. Do you think Ernie's doing this? You can tell because his stomach will be enormous and he'll refuse the food you offer. I think you're expecting him to be a town cat in a country environment. Except for the coyotes, etc, he's in cat heaven and I think you should let him enjoy his time. Put limits on him - he can't come inside covered in guts, and whatever else you really hate. But you clean up Flyer's "leavings", I assume, so why not Ernie's rabbit guts? And I agree with the breakaway collar, if you must have a bell. A stretchy one will just leave him hanging somewhere. lol, I had a friend whose cat had a collar and bell because they were horrified at it killing birds. After a couple of weeks with the collar it started bringing birds to them again. They watched him and realised he'd found a way of kind of hunching up one shoulder so his neck muffled the bell sound. Nice may work. He caught another one this morning and left it next to the steps. I threw it away. He doesn't hide his carnage while eating it like the other cats did. The other ones would go somewhere private with their meal. He's also feeling beefier. I'm just expecting him to have some manners. He's such a weird cat. If I don't know he's outside, he will start body slamming the door until I let him in. One night he made it to the top of the fifth wheel and he was running around back and forth until I called for him to come in. We have 9 ft ceilings so it's really tall, and he's making it up there. He'll run inside and curl up really tight as if he's saying - you can't move me. Ya - he's in heaven out there. The carnage king.

I had the most excellent dream. My whole family was in my childhood home for Christmas. I walked into the bathroom and saw a little ginger kitten running away from me, so of course I picked him up. I took him and gave him to Dad to hold (Dad being a cat lover) and turned around to discover another bunch of kittens. Then suddenly there were clumps of kittens everywhere. Some were 10 weeks old, some five weeks and some smaller ones. They were grey and white tabby, or ginger, and a whole pile of black ones.
But then I saw my dream kitten, who I immediately named Humphrey, even though I didn't know his sex. He was black with HOT PINK stripes from his face down to his waist, then the stripes were NEON ORANGE and continued to the end of his tail. His tummy and front paws were white. Dad said I shouldn't keep him because he was sure to get adopted, and I should choose a more ordinary one. But I loved him and he'd gone to sleep in my arms, so I was keeping him.
The shelter wasn't open that day so the kittens had to be stored overnight. We decided to stuff them into the living room. My stupidest sister had put up festive nylon curtains with holly on them, and the bigger kittens immediately began to climb them. That amused me. As I was herding the fifty or so kittens into the room I noticed three motherkats, which was a relief. I tried to match the smaller kittens to their mothers by colour. There were more mothers around but the room was a sea of kittens so I couldn't see them.
The only bad thing was that my stupid sister and the rest of my siblings were rearranging the house, so I couldn't find cat food or litter or litter trays, etc etc. But Dad was quite happy, sitting at the kitchen table with his new ginger kitten. lol. And I did have Humphrey, after all.

What ever did you have for dinner, MissP? lol, Val, nothing unusual. I sometimes do dream about coloured cats, but usually they're pretty pastels, like fairy floss pink or sky blue or lavender. Humphrey was my first neon disco kitten.

Standoff. Hootie has been laying under the bed lately, since it's warmed up and the tile is cool. Which means Trixie has laid claim to the cat pillow on the bed. This morning, Hootie wanted to lay on the pillow, but Trixie was already there. Hootie sat on the end table and just stared at Trixie. Every so often she'd cut her eyes over at him (while not moving a muscle), then go back to sleep. Unfortunately when I got up with the camera, they both looked at me. I'll have to try next time with the cell phone and use the video feature. Hoodie looks like he’s helping Trixie with the lines for her upcoming movie.

Ernie the Serial Killer is getting a collar with bells that will make a lot of noise. I'll make sure it's one of the safe ones that will break away. His level of carnage keeps increasing. Mice, rabbits, and birds.
A bird flew into the shop the other day and he had it within 5 minutes. He's climbing the large metal framework to catch the d@mn things. I know cats do this. It's normal. But this amount? He's leaving stuff for the neighbors too ( the one who bought our house ).
It's disgusting cleaning up all of these body parts. I've had at least 5 rabbit carcasses this week I've had to dispose of. He's just gross. And then I wake up and he's trying to curl up with me. He's such a baby.

A friend of mine rescued a cat years ago who also had a taste for blood. Cali would leave baby rabbits and chipmunks on my friend's doorstep. One night she heard screeching and went outside to find Cali facing off against a racoon! (Cali won). Cali came to live with me the following year, and eventually turned into a happy indoor cat who lived to the ripe old age of 19.
So there's hope for Serial Killer.

Dantes, as long as it's got more than one or two bells. Some cats learn to hunch up their shoulders to stifle the bell. But if there's two or three he won't be able to.

Our tux chases racoons and terrorizes them. I found her chasing one across our little road and that racoon looked terrified! Cassie might be about 6 1/2 lb, but I think she may have been about 8 lb at the time - a silly crazy little thing, but she has this big presence. We call her sister Leafy Butt (Jamie) The Executioner for her number of kills (moles and rats), though I think Cassie is the one who leaves little rat bodies for our neighbor as well as us.
They hunted as hard at 13 or 14 as they did when they were younger, and still hunt at 16, but they've depopulated the area of moles and rats. We've managed to keep them away from birds pretty well, but Jamie is still really fast on her feet and managed to nab one the other day. Meanwhile I saw Cassie the Tux in Trouble chasing a squirrel up a tree not long ago. So it really depends on in what kind of shape they are and their instincts. The bells are a good idea.

Well Ernie has his new collar. It's a magnetic break away with one jingle bell. They didn't have any with more bells, so I guess I'll just order some.
At first he was scratching like crazy at it. But - he's lasted 24 hours, which is probably impressive for him. He sounds so cute coming down the hall jingling. I'll have to post a photo. I'm hoping this cuts down on the carnage. The other day there was something on the ground outside that was so disgusting I had a hard time with it. And I generally don't get queasy.

They still haven't realised they should put 2 bells on? Dumb. But a craft store should have them. It is gross, but you know Ernie agrees with you, otherwise he wouldn't leave it. And at least he doesn't bring it inside.

I bought it at a small local pet store. It jingles really well. In fact, Ernie jingled right by me yesterday with a baby rabbit in his mouth. It was his little victory lap to show me he could still catch stuff while jingling. I sprayed him with the hose.
I give up. He's a killer.

Yes, he's definitely a survivor. I think he has the best of both worlds. He romps around outside and makes the whole area his. He also makes the neighbor's property his. lol Then he comes in and snuggles up on a comfy bed with us. He's figured out which door he wants to enter in the new house. If I don't let him in, he sits on the chair and looks inside at us.
I really need to post photos of him.

Some cats on youtube have a doorbell. lol.
I think my Lydia would use one. When she wants to come in the front door instead of the back, she bashes on the screen door and meows loudly. As this usually happens at 11.15pm (she's pretty precise) I have to be nippy getting to the door before she wakes the neighbours.
The thing I don't get is that no matter how long it takes she sits there and insists on being let in, rather than just going around the back.

Awwww, he looks like a big boy and I love his face! Reminds me of an all black kitty we had when I was a little kid, s/he (don't remember) but they were named Snoopy.

No he can't. LOL
Ernie has his sweet side when he wants to cuddle with us. He's still a killer. He wants to eliminate our property of any and all rabbits. The jingling doesn't help them because they freeze up.

Well, it's not like rabbits are endangered. If he built his corpse altar away in the bushes somewhere you wouldn't know or care.
And the rabbits keep him away from birds. I feel sorry when a cat gets a bird (unless it's a bad bird) because birds have a much harder life than rabbits do, trying to find food etc.

I think he's been annoying our two Magpies that hang around. They've been noisier than usual and I can't help but think Ernie has a hand in that. We pulled the fifth wheel outside and I was cleaning it out, and the male was screaming away at the window. The female was giving a bit of back up, but the male seemed to want to make some point.

Sounds like some people I know. One of our 16 year old cats did catch a bird and completely devour it the other night - ::sigh:: probably Jamie. She didn't like what we gave her for dinner so went out and caught her own. VERY fortunately, they catch few birds. They used to have jingly collars, but they'd get lost, or torn off in a fight, and we finally gave up - they're chipped. We tried to put a bell on Cassie and she went bezerk - she kept trying to run away from it and kept tearing around the house and if course the harder she ran, the more it jingled - at one point I saw her flying toward me, her eyes like saucers and her ears back, headed for about her hundredth lap. I grabbed her and took the bell off - it was funny in a way but unfunny in another.

Cassie is such the drama queen. When we were rebuilding the deck she went around the entire time with the fur of her tail all standing on end - she has a long tail so it was as if she was being followed around by one of those dust brushes. This went on for three weeks and it never went down save when she was sleeping. The poor thing would wake up and wham! The tail would expand. We did all kinds of things to soothe her, but she developed a phobia about door thresholds, stopped trusting floor texture changes, grew suspicious of linoleum. Her progress around the house was this kind creeping anxiety. Meanwhile, her fur-brained sister was out playing on the joists and leaping around like it was her jungle gym. We tried to make sure she only went out the front door so she wouldn't see this scary partial deck but she was fixated on looking at it.

We have one lucky little girl here. Last night I was coming home and I noticed her in the road. She was looking under some branches and wandering around acting completely lost. I knew right away she wasn't a feral. I stopped the car and she came up and meowed at the window. I quick went home ( house was in site - semi rural ), grabbed food, water, and my neighbor. She could see me out there doing something. The other neighbor stopped to see what we were doing. All of us were on the phone trying to figure out if the cat was lost or dumped. I vote dumped. I'm fairly certain she's pregnant. She's lumpy up and down her belly. Of course - everyone has an excuse as to why they can't keep her, shelter her, help find a home. So she's in our shop right now and one of my girls is coming to get her today. She's such a sweet thing. Follows me around, and she even let me give her a brief shower to clean her up from the kennel mess. I had her in a kennel last night so she wouldn't run away. I will search out some lost cat ads, but it's doubtful I'll find one for her. I'll post a better photo when I can get one.
