I had bushes removed from the front of my house in June. A month or so later I noticed this vine growing with large yellow blossoms. I thought, "what a pretty weed."
I thought it was zucchini but I now have 2 free pumpkins.
Mind you, If I planted the thing it wouldn't grow. I didn't garden all season. No time and last year my container plantings yielded under a dozen cherry tomatoes (and not even at the same time for a salad).

How fun!
My mystery plants always turn out to be weeds.

Shirley: I thought it looked like squash blossoms but had no idea where it came from so assumed it was in fact a weed. A squirrel ate my pumpkin last year and evidently the seeds were deposited in the bed. When I had the bushes removed I guess it turned in to a happy vine.
and FYI, pumpkins grow like weeds-and quickly too. The vine must be ten feet long give or take and I have another that started. Had I known, I would have thrown a few tomatoes in there too:-) Evidently the only way I can grow anything is unintentionally.

I will have to go snoop around the edge of the woods where I discarded my pumpkins last year. Mostly I put them out for the animals but the thought of a secret pumpkin patch crossed my mind.

My landscaper told me that a weed is simply a plant where you don't want it. It really seems to be true. Very cool "weed" that you got & so timely!

I would love a rogue pumpkin plant! I also love "volunteer" plants. I had a single sunflower this year and while I was camping last weekend Mr Squirrel chewed off the entire head. I came home to a stalk. Stupid rodent.

Rogue pumpkins are the best! Much better than the tame ones.

I love to see what the critters, birds, and the wind bring me. They've brought a dark purple lilac bush, a lavender lilac bush, an Oregon grape bush, lambs ears, a double pink columbine, a miniature Iris, an ornamental allium, tulips, a linden tree, and others over the years.

We raised a rogue pumpkin one year when our sons were about 10 & 12. We lived in a pine forest and the seed had sprouted in a small patch of ground that got some sun. It couldn't spread out much so it climbed a tree. The one pumpkin was suspended in the air about 6 feet up. The boys built it a platform. It was a strange sight.
Now we live near corn & cotton fields. A few years ago we had a rogue cotton plant produce a couple of handfuls of cotton bolls. We picked them & they reside in a bowl in our den. Simple, natural pleasures are very nice.

My sister had a rogue watermelon that grew under the deck of her old house. She figured it sprouted from people spitting out their watermelon seeds.

I found rogue parsley yesterday. The chickens promptly ate it but that is OK because it was in the crack of the back patio.
I am still jealous of the pumpkin.

One time I was in my back yard gardening and had a rogue thorny bush. I was determined to get rid of it. Ended up with horrible poison ivy and being on two rounds of prednisone. Who knew?? poison ivy climbs:-(
And my pumpkins are the small, sugar ones and have perfect stems. I should see what else I can grow by accident. Watermelon would be great!
