My dog Ozzy has had some health issues lately but none that we thought were life threatening. Over the past few days he has been very lethargic. He has not eaten. Today he couldn't keep water down. He has a seeping boil on his back that we were going to have removed and now we discovered 2 more.
I'm not sure if they are related to his lethargy. He has a vet appointment in an hour. I've never seen him sick let alone like this.
He is nine and will be ten in about 3 weeks or so. I don't want him to suffer.

I thought you had that one boil removed already.

No not yet. Now I think they may be more than boils or cysts.

Oh no, you may be right that they may be a symptom of something more if he's sick now. Or perhaps he just has some kind of tummy bug and it's unrelated. Odd that he has a couple more coming up already though. Did they do any kind of scraping or biopsy on the cyst since it wouldn't heal? To look for cancer cells or anything? Or lab work last time?

Ok so they are saying they are hot spots and infected. I knew about hot spots but didn't know they could make a dog so sick.
They did blood work which they did last time he was there. They want him on an antibiotic! They charged out the wazoo which is why we changed vets. Oye vey! It was over 300.00! And we have to go back and get the antibiotic because we couldn't afford it all in one trip!
I am just happy it is not life ending. At this age with a big dog you never know!

Both things are fixable!!! (((Ozzy))) Jamie (leafy butt) once had e. coli (two kinds) and got so sick and lethargic, lost weight and slept all the time, drank loads of water. We finally took her to the vet and it all stemmed from that infection - after treatment she was much, much better. Especially for an older animal or person, an infection can really create problems so I hope Ozzy is well on the road to recovery now.

Poor guy! Hoping for a quick recovery. Our golden gets hot spots ALL the time. Our swissy mix just had his first one, and it presented so differently than the golden's do I thought it was something else. He also stopped eating as much as normal ~ where as pretty much nothing affects the golden's appetite. (They're both 15 months old)

He also stopped eating as much as normal ~ where as pretty much nothing affects the golden's appetite. (They're both 15 months old) How do you treat them? For our swissy they gave him a shot ~ he's such a freaking baby that the spray we use on our golden made him scream bloody murder. Our golden we usually just shave the spot and spray it with spray the vet gave us. Honestly, we used to take him in every time it happened but we'd been in probably 10 times by the time he was 11 months old so I kind of stopped unless it gets really, really bad. They would shave the spot and give us antibiotics to give him but I found just shaving the spot and keeping him from licking it helped just as much. Someone told me to use coconut oil (externally) or coconut oil with a drop of lavender oil in it (again, externally) helps a lot too. Since we have two though coconut oil is hard b/c they literally lick it off each other. Someone else told me about an OTC product that Walgreens? carries. I think it was Walgreens, let me see if I can find the name of it

Oh hot spots suck, not to mention infected ones, that poor baby. Then to have pancreatitis on top of it like he wasn't feeling bad enough I was going to say some swear by coconut oil just rub straight coconut oil on the spot. You really need to shave the hair around the spots if the vet hasn't that will help it heal, they need air to heal up, moisture makes them worse. Maybe invest in one of the air up collars instead of the dreaded cone to keep him from licking the meds off the spots. They sell them at petsmart. You can also do salt water compresses for pain relief, fill a bowl with warm water and put a spoon of salt in it then soak a washrag and put it on the spot for a while. It will help draw all the oozy puss out. Did they offer you any pain meds for him? They usually aren't very expensive and I'm sure he needs them right now, he's gotta be in pain. Unfortunately you can't really give them people meds for pain but I'd check with the vet and see if benedryl might help with the irritation and see what dose to give him. Mom's dog has to take it for skin allergies and hot spots when they get bad and it helps.

He is definitely not out the woods. He can't keep water down.
I know in a human with pancreatitis you can't drink or eat for at least 48 hours if not longer. If you are vomiting. But you would have an iv. I'm going to see what the vet says.
Thanks everyone! I'll tell him he's got some of the best rooting for him!

Oh no. Hoping to prevent an ICU visit.
Hot spots: if caught before they get too big: shave the area and beyond. Trim fur back as much as possible.
Clean with Betadyne or Phisohex.
Spray with Vetricyn Wound or Hot Spot Spray ($ but worth it). Pet valu sells it.
Clean with Betadyne or phisohex a couple of times a day and then spray. You don't want to let the wound dry out too much because it will get icky. You want to see nice pink skin.
Some people use brand name Milk of Magnesia. Some people use Gold Bind.
I use the first method. My one Lab gets the treatment at the first sign of an oozing knick.

Things are not good. He can't walk or barely move. The meds are only for the skin. The pancreatitis is taking a huge toll. The only good news is he is able to keep food and water down. But he can't go to the bathroom. Thanks for your kind thoughts everyone.

OK, that's a step in the right direction! Before he couldn't keep water down and wasn't eating, now he can. That's the worst, when they don't eat or drink, so hopefully that's over the hump then.

Thanks for asking. He seems to be improving some. He has been sleeping most of the time. He has trouble getting up but once he is standing seems to move ok. But it takes him a very long time to get up.
He has been eating and drinking. He was able to go to the bathroom last night. He even wanted to play a bit but then had second thoughts.
I'm hoping each day gets better.
