So sorry to hear this shophippy. Sometimes all you can do is make them comfortable and give them endless love - which I'm sure you've been doing for as long as you've had Lincoln. (((Lincoln))) (((shophippy)))

Oh, this is terrible news. I'm so sorry, shop. It's the time anyone who loves their pet dreads.
I think you're making the right decision in letting him live out the rest of his days in his usual surroundings and usual routine (with extra treats and love, of course!). I don't think he'd thank you for more vet visits, tests and treatments if he had the choice. Just keep loving him as you've always done until the end.
Ugh, I rarely get teary on the interwebz, but I am now. So sad. (((shophippy and Lincoln and family)))

Awww - didn't mean to make anyone sad! It sucks, but it is what it is - I knew people here would understand. Thanks for all the sympathy & well wishes.

Yes. He's been kind of "off" for the last day (prob. minor seizures) & this evening started having major cluster seizures. Had to break out the valium (for him!) - hoping to make it through the night now. May have to make a hard decision tomorrow. Thanks for asking.

Ha. Wait until I post about the death threats those have been getting lately. We're off to read right now, though, and they usually settle right down when I do that. Give yourself and LIncoln a hug from me and my kittehs. My big orange guy actually likes dogs.

Pets are family -- it's hard not to get attached to them. And unlike most other family members (well, mine at least), pets love you unconditionally and never make you feel bad about yourself.
(((hugs)))

He's actually doing ok so far today - eating like pig, barking at the mailman, running out in the yard, etc. After talking to the vet, we are going to try another medicine to control seizures. *Sigh* One day at a time I guess...

I am so very sorry. One of our gals had neurological symptoms & it was so difficult :-( My heart goes out to you & Lincoln. Hopefully the steroids will keep him stable for as long as possible. Be aware that steroids can cause mood changes, hunger & unusual behaviors in pups, things like food protection that they didn't have before or general grumpiness.
Positive vibes for the best situation for you all.

Update - We are now pretty much sure Lincoln has a brain tumor. After a few days of improvement, he began to get much worse - confusion, weakness, tremors & other neurological symptoms. By process of elimination (testing for everything else basically) that's pretty much the verdict - plus he has all of the classic symptoms of a frontal lobe tumor. We started him on steroids a few days ago & he has improved immensely (another definitive sign - they relieve the swelling/pressure on the brain), so for now he is being spoiled rotten. He will stay on the sterioids for the rest of his life until they no longer control the symptoms. Based on how fast his symptoms came on - we are pretty sure we don't have much longer. We're not going the route of traveling to a specialist for an MRI, etc. Even with specialized treatment, the prognosis for a brain tumor is not good & I can't imagine putting a dog through all of that. My daughter works at a vet clinic/hospital with 5 different experienced/well-trained vets who can handle just about anything, so I trust their judgement. They have been so nice & have really gone above & beyond to help us. Good thoughts please. This is really hard You check to make sure he didn't have a tick or any tick-borne disease? So sad.

Yes, we've tested for all of the tick-borne diseases. We have a lot of ticks where we live (lots of pines & surrounded by wildlife refuge) so we keep the tick protection going year round & check often. I was actually kind of hopeful for that because they are usually treatable with antibiotics.

Just checking in (((((Shop and Lincoln)))) - I'm more attached to animals generally than I am to people, so I understand the upset and sadness.

I'm sorry I also sometimes avoid threads that I think will make me sad. I really don't want to be known as the "downer" thread person, lol. On the bright side - Lincoln had a good day yesterday & so far today.

Aww hugs to all of you. I would have made the same decision you did, I would make him comfortable and make his life as happy as could be for the time he has left. Happy to hear the meds are working for now and he can enjoy some more time with all of you even if it is bitter sweet.
